After seeing the thread on Johnny Cash cover of NIN's Hurt I realised that some covers are my favorite pieces of music. I have the downward spiral by NIN and always thought Hurt was the stongest song. Johnny Cash though has taken it to new heights. I had not seen the film clip but when I viewed that clip I was blown away by the sadness of it all.

So I will add a couple more, in no particular order, that I have loved over the years and hope that others can let me know theirs.

The Band Played Waltzing Matilda by The Pogues.
Highway to Hell by Ed Kuepper.
New Dawn Fades by Moby.
Redemption Song By Joe Strummer And The Mescaleros
I'm Not Like Everybody Else By Jimmy And The Boys.

There are plenty more but these came to mind. :thumbsu:

Hurt is one of the best covers, it gave JC a whole lot of appreciation, attention and respect from a whole new generation.

Other covers I enjoy are:

Frank Sinatra: Bad Leroy Brown

Pat Boone: Crazy Train

Tom Petty and Heartbreakers: So You Wanna Be A Rock and Roll Star

David and Mick: Dancing In The Street

RHCP: Havana Affair

Tom Petty: arseh*le (Beck)

There are plenty rock or punk covers of pop songs but not enough punk songs or heavy metal or whatever songs covered by softer artists.
I didn't know Hurt was a NIN cover (heard none of their work) but I liked it and I haven't heard much of Johnny Cash.

www.coverville.com is a great podcast that plays cover songs

I was thing Hurt by Johnny Cash is THE BEST cover but then I remembered another song.
Jeff Buckley's version of Hallelujah IMO is THE BEST cover song.

Johnny Cash has plenty of other great covers, One (U2), Redemption Song with Joe Strummer (Bob Marley) are another two examples of great cover songs. The American Recordings contain many brilliant tracks.

Other covers I rate highly
Common People by William Shatner (orig. Pulp)
Wonderwall by Ryan Adams (orig. Oasis)
97 Bonnie & Clyde by Tori Amos (orig. Eminem)
I Don't Like Mondays by Tori Amos (orig. Boomtown Rats)
Respect by Aretha Franklin (orig. Otis Redding)
Running Up That Hill by Placebo (orig. Kate Bush)
Mad World by Gary Jules and Michael Andrews (orig. Tears For Fears)
Tiny Dancer by Ben Folds (orig. Elton John)
Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World by Israel Kamakawiwo'Ole

for those who like A Cappella a couple of great podcasts are

and

and there are many more.

Been a stack of these cover's thread's done before with Cash's "Hurt" mentioned on numerous occassions. It is sublime, along with many of his covers. His liason's with Rick Rubin produced some of the finest cover's ever. As mentioned Rusty Cage, Personal Jesus, also his cover of Cave's "Mercy Seat" is superb. Mention of Nick Lowe by LL evokes thoughts of Cash's cover of "The Beast In Me"

FYI LL "(What's So Funny "bout) Peace, Love And Understanding" was originally by Brinsley Schwarz (penned by Lowe). Steve Earle does a pretty good cover as well. Also Paul Revere And The Raiders version of "I'm Not Your Stepping Stone" is absolute killer.

Folds' 'Tiny Dancer' is more than a cover, live with the big sunnys on(they play it on music max a bit) its pretty much an imitation!!
