I just got my copy of the Black and White magazine in the mail today.
I love the first one of the year because it includes a short brief on each player and what is expected of them this year. For some it is "gain confidence in the reserves and build body strength" (that kind of comment is usually about a rookie), and for others it is "push for a move to the midfield" and such.
They are far more detailed than that, but I can't be bothered making one up.

Anyways,
When I went to the VFL game vs Nth Ballarat, I noticed Gault's marking. At the time I had no idea who he was, but he seemed pretty good and was a presence in the forward line which was pretty average that day.

So I looked through the Black and White magazine and found what the club had to say on him. It is as follows:

"He's really grown significantly, physically, in the last 12 months... He's gone from a 188cm midfielder to a 198cm key defender come ruckman... It's surprised us how quickly he's come on..."

And

"Having slowly 'grown into his body', Gault brings great size and mobility to the westpac centre... His sole WAFL senior appearance last year (17 touches, 7 marks) suggests he's a player worth keeping an eye out for..."

I only saw him play forward in the VFL and was impressed - considering I'd never heard of him before.

Has he flown under the radar with the likes of Elliott, Paine, Yagmoor and Witts coming in?

Re: Your opinion or knowledge of Corey?

In the thread title I was meant to write "Corey Gault" not just "Corey"... Can one of the mods please change that if possible, as I hate it when threads have ambiguous titles like this one now does.

Re: Your opinion or knowledge of Corey?

We seem to surprisingly have almost a "surplus" of young talls at the moment, with Keefe, Ceglar, Witts, Paine, Hartley, and Gault all relatively new kids on the block. I don't see him getting a game before Paine, Ceglar or Hartley at this point based on their VFL performances, but I reckon he'd get a run around before Witts just because they are handling Witts with kid gloves.

If our current luck with injury continues, he'll probably end up playing in the bloody midfield at some point this year :|

Re: Your opinion or knowledge of Corey?

Well has shown Some Good Signs the last 2 Weeks but still very Raw and Skinny.

Would be at least Next Season before he even gets a Look at AFL Footy

For one horrible moment I thought of Corey Worthington being associated with the club!

Lol i thought the same thing.

However my first thought was a supercoach player 3 weeks late on the wrong board asking about Joel Corey.:p

Re: Your opinion or knowledge of Corey?

If he was a midfielder then that explains his ability to hold his own below his knees. If he could still be able to play in the midfield, and grows another few cms then he could be able to play the Nic Nat role and rove his own ruck taps.

I can confirm Gault has grown significantly since this time last year.

In 2011 Gault went from a being a very, very average player (no disrespect intended) to a really competitive tall and his improvement last year was of any tall the best by a long shot. Physically grew significantly and add that to coachability and he looks the goods. Is that year older but considering how late he has developed I really consider him to be something closer to an 17 or 18 year old physically.

Gault has a really nice leap and can step into the ruck and compete - while we haven't seen him in the ruck yet knowing his game from last year his 2nd + 3rd efforts in particular are impressive. Very good at ground level. Having previously been a midfielder does have a good skill set for a mid and tackles well for a tall. Very athletic - speed very good but also has an unbelieveable leap. Has the ability to mark at the highest point and as a forward that is a big asset when you look at his height and that leap he has.

Long term I'd love to see Gault develop into a no.2 ruckman, so maybe 15% ruck and 85% fwd playing alongside two key forwards would be a really great role for Gault.

Really optimistic with Gault and I strongly agree that he is one to watch. He is one of those few "upside players" who through his very swift development looks likely to fulfil his potential. Don't see that development slowing down any time soon.

I watched him play 2 weeks ago in the VFL and was impressed.

He didn't do anything spectacular or tear the game apart, I was looking at potential. He has it.

Tall, agile, moves like a midfielder but has a good leap and is good overhead.

Give him some time I can see him starting as a HFF / third tall and depending on how he fills out either staying there, playing wing as well or filling out and being a key forward changing ruck.

I like the look of him for the time being as a 3rd tall high forward option.

I saw him at Vic Park against Nth Ballarat 2 weeks ago. Our forward line resembled an old growth forest. Lots of tall timber that didn't move anywhere. Gault was a shining light, clunked some really strong marks. Looks like a good kid.

Agree.

However, I think our forward line more resembled an old, old, wooden ship.

Stay classy

Yeah agree. Could play that Westhoff style game. Plays like a footballer which I like.

Gault represents one of those “Hine special” picks. He has been picked as a project player with huge upside.
As you will no doubt recall, his pre-draft highlight reel consisted of plenty of nice ruck work as well as a running goal and a few marks. I can absolutely see him developing into a dangerous tall forward/ruck. His ruck work at the end of the third quarter (haven’t watched the last yet) when he finally got a run, was excellent and he comfortably won his hit outs in the center. His agility for a man of his size is very noticeable and he will be able to bring forward line pressure which any resting ruck (Jolly or Wood) cannot bring to the table.
I’m excited by what I see of this kid and will follow his progress this season closely.

Hine has some good speculative picks. Pendles and Reid were picked well ahead of where people thought. Then you have rookies like Keefe. I may have forgotten other examples.

I am not sure on Reid as I think he went in with 5 Picks of people predicate he would be Drafted

What kind of time frame are we expecting him to get senior games?
Next year? Two years? 3? 4?

He and Paine will be competing for that 3rd tall role i think. One of those 2 will end up being traded or poached if they both end up good.

I would say 2-3 years.

(this is presuming nothing happens to Cloke or Dawes and Tarrant can't go forward)

Paine has him covered in terms of size, and I think we'll pick Paine over Gault even if Gault has better skills than Paine. Even during that time, he could be contending against Witts as well as a 3rd tall.

And in terms of Ruck, I think Ceglar would be ahead of Gault atm, and Gault could possibly be competing against Keefe as well.

Paine is nowhere near as tall as Gault and the two would hardly be competing for the same position if 2nd ruck is the role for Gault, though Gault may well spend time forward like Brown, probably in Paine's position. We are talking 197cm to 192cm if memory serves me correctly.
