I know this will probably be a touchy subject but what do you think of some of your clubs trades?

A few come to my mind like Croad,Modra

What do you think?

Concerning Lloyd, McLeod and other draftees (Jeff White) I don't feel too bad about as the nature of the draft is such that is still a bit of a lottery how well players develop.

The Croad trade in hindsight was a shocker in terms of ourlongterm playing list. Everyone would like to have Judd or Hodge in our side now, but at that point in our history we were coming off a terrible year. We had inexperienced players asked to play out of their division, ie Leigh Brown on LLoyd. The club was losing money and the "supporters"/fremantle public were depressed. Croad and Farmer brought an excitement and hope for the future for the team itself and the public. Croad's celebrity status was worth a great deal too i n terms of marketing and money.

We paid Croad and Farmer more than they were worth but if we hadn't of got them our state of depression may have lasted longer, perhaps Pav may not have stayed at Freo?

Generally our trading in the past has seen us trading away our young talent for experience. Peter Bell is perhaps our only success out of this strategy with Chris Bond, Modra and Stuart Anderson notable failures. On the whole I would say our past trading has seen us being too reactive, too keen, too naive and not nearly savvy enuff or secure enuff to think long term.

How smart is our Chief Executive Officer Cameron Schwab?

Kevin Sheedy was on the radio with 6PR Sports Saturday with George Grljusich, Michael Thompson and Bruce Yardley. A listener rang in and asked what he thought of Freo signing Farmer on a 4 year contract. Sheeds said " Long term contracts and payments over 300k per yr are reserved for our main play makers, not for flankers. Good luck to any player who can get a 4 year contract these days but Essendon wouldn't be offering contracts like that."

Jeff Farmer's original contract was reported to have been 1st yr 300k, 2nd yr 500k. 3rd yr 700k. 2 years into his contract, his contract is renegotiated to 4 yr contract until the end of 2007 with a balloon payment in the last year. I don't know how much Farmer will earn in the next 4 yrs but Freo should have paid him his 700k for next yr then offered him a contract at market value. 150k would be closer to the mark. Farmer's form in the the last 2 yrs doesn't warrant a 4 yr contract. I know it was to ease salary cap pressures for next yr but this could end up being a long term nightmare. Farmer could spend his last yr of his contract playing in the wafl on a sqwillion dollars a yr and Cameron Schwab looking like a goose.

Croad wasn't an awful trade because we got McPharlin as well. And Croad still had trade value after a couple of years.

Lloyd we never traded. Never even had an opportunity to recruit him at any stage.

Lucas we never traded. Like Lloyd, we never even had an opportunity to recruit him in the first place. I don't know where you're getting this from.

Modra was a reasonable trade, given we only gave a couple of later draft picks for him.

The worst trades were (by far) McLeod and Farmer.

Oh sorry about that my source looks stupid now it was the Herald Sun.

I think the Kickett/Delaney/Ridley deal was all tied together and for the 3 of them the Bombers got compensation draft picks. with those picks they took Lucas and Lloyd.

well, we started with farmer and bell in our firm grasp then let them go before our inaugural game and got them back later at huge expense.

heath black, appeared to be an un-needed player who plays in a position where we had talent in abundance, he leaves and his position becomes the one spot where we need someone special

Pretty much correct. For every uncontracted player that Fremantle signed, the club on the end of it got a compensatory draft pick of a 16 year old player. I can't remember exactly which players we signed off Essendon, but we certainly couldn't have picked any 16 year old at the time regardless of how many uncontracted players we signed, Lloyd and Lucas included. Those 16 year olds were still not eligible for the draft, only to clubs that lost uncontracted players to Fremantle.

That whole allowing freo to take a player out of contract bull****, was never designed to help the dockers.
It merely assisted the side offloading some over paid hack.
Geelong recieved King
Essendon received Lolyd
Eagles received Wirrapunda

Really angers me when people reckon freo were given allot of free rides.

Fremantle weren't given 'allot of free rides' but they were given enough to be successful in their early years. But instead of doing the hard yards with young talented players like Farmer and Mcleod they selected claremont crabs that knew Neeshams system.

Exactly right sera, if we keep on agreeing like this I'll just have to become your No.1 Fan. Did you know that Neesham was vehemently opposed to the Draft and in fact wouldn't attend until he was told to?

However if they selected South Fremantle crabs Fremantle's situation would have been 3 premierships by now :D

I do agree with what you have sera, very well put.

If only the AFL would let us wipe the Nesham years off the history books... :)

Nesham was the coach....Phil smart was a nd still is the recruting manager. In the early years Phil smart was taken for a ride by one and all. The wafl and commissiners all let it happen so it would help the WCE
First year draft

Yeah, the West Coast Eagles put a gun to Phil Smarts head and said "Draft Clinton Wolf and trade for Phil Gilbert or your toast..."

The only person who took Phil Smart for a ride was Gerard Neesham.

Especially when he made him list his useless nephew John on the Rookie List, they still laugh about it down at East Fremantle. I think they call it NEPOTISM!

Kapow!!! is back after an extensive break. Anybody miss me. No, Doh!

Anyway, on the subject, Modra wasn't that bad a trade, he did a few good things in his time.

However, Croad was an absolute shocker. We got one good game from him and that was in 2002 in the Melbourne game where he kicked 7 goals.

Des Headland hasn't proved himself yet so I'm also ruling him under that category. He was desperate to come back home but really, we've only received a few good games from him, he needs to lift.

But otherwise I'm happy, even with Farmer.

I think alot of people write off what Tony Modra did to this club. He bought a huge fan base to the club (mostly female) and really put us on the map so to speak. I can still remember screaming "MODRA!!!!" when he took one of those amazing screamers - he was an excitement machine. I personally think he was one of the best trades we have ever done!

Yeah - and same goes for Croad. Despite everyone bagging us (and him for being useless) - he got people interested in the club and increased the fan base, despite us being pretty much useless at the end of 2001.
He was worth it for that, an besides he's not our problem any more, so good luck to him at Hawthorn.

Personally my worst trade was buying 2900 puts when the market turned and not getting out quick enough. Ouch.

As opposed to clubs who didn't even draft him the first time, or Pav for that matter.

As for playing with McLeod and Farmer you can't go into teh league with all 16 and 17 yr olds. With the eagles winning a premiership the year before the side had to be reasonably competitive and we were but it was a short term gain with a plan that couldn't hold up in the heat of AFL.
