DOCKERS
I was at the game last week and i thought Grover won so many 1 on 1 contests. He was playing like a man possessed. Very rarely was he beaten. I thought it was one of the best games of his career.

Fast forward 6 days. His gives away untidy free kicks close to goal, one by running the ball out of bounds. The other by spoiling a mark while facing the player (Fremantle were 2 on 1 in this marking contest). I also thought he lost more 1 on 1s than he won.

Don't get me wrong, i think Grover is an important part of the backline. But he kept getting shuffled around from player to player, and was obviously being singled out by the Saints forwards as someone who could be beat on the lead.

That sort of performance should see him get the torch applied, because its the yoyo players that make Fremantle so unpredictable, one week they play like champions, the next it seems they are well down.

Hopefully it was just an off week. I haven't really paid particular close attention to his performances in the past. But i thought this week was a stark contrast to last week where he dominated.

singling out those incidents proves nothing but how horrible the umpiring was. when grover went out of bounds he was forced over, had nowhere to go. unbelievable free kick. the other one was very very very soft. grover had eyes only for the ball, and guess what actually punched the ball. not sure how the umpire pulled that one out. you can only get done for front on contact if you're not loking at the ball

Grover from time to time loses his bundle in defense in high pressure situations, he isn't exactly the biggest yoyo on our team though. We cannot get rid of him at all either since we have no one to fill his position unless we draft them at the end of the year. And I don't think we should get rid of him since there are no better replacements at this stage.

That deliberate out of bounds when he was pretty much tackled over the line was one of the worst decisions I've seen in a long time. Wouldn't have been paid against any other team in the AFL.

If everyone played with the same passion as this bloke we would be far better off.

One of the commentators - Buckley perhaps (?) - tried to justify the 'contact' free kick - "oh, you've got to go for the ball, can't make body contact.."

And the deliberate out of bounds. hmmmm.......

Fast forward 9 days. One of the best on the ground.

The mind boggles, yes my examples from last week were 2 average umpiring decisions. But he was soundly beaten against the Saints.

Yet for 2 home games in a row has been one of the best.

Two shit completely wrong umpiring decisions. The "spoil" was the second free kick after Mundy was pushed squarely in the back.

Great today! How many times did he run towards his opponent (with the flight of the ball), then turn at the last second, eyes on the ball, and spoil and not give the free kick away. Love his work ethic on the field.

I'll say it again, he is very under-rated by AFL supporters and now it appears by his own teams supporters !!!!!.

He always gives 100% and is regularly playing out of his weight division. He would be one of the first picked each week.

Any Freo supporter who questions his value to the team ........................ well I reckon they know b all about footy.

Questionable, definately had a crap game against the Saints. Will be interesting to see if a trend develops, home versus away.

I haven't paid really close attention to him in seasons gone by. Maybe the Saints game was just a one off shocker.

For mine 2 out of the last 3 games he's been in the top 5 players. Lets see what the game against Geelong holds?

What did he actually do wrong there?

He had to run with Whitey (who has a huge tank) all game because Macpharlap was injured but He still gave 100%

Couldn't have said it any better myself masai. :thumbsu:

yep, bloke next to me today commented on how well antoni was playing, and i could only wholeheartedly agree! :thumbsu:

Was beaten twice from memory by lucas all day - once just inside 50, lucas running back with the flight (he missed) and once close to goal (lucas kicked it). Lucas' only other goal was a poach from the other dons player who marked it close to goal (big handball over the top)

So overall, well done Antoni!! :thumbsu:

Grover was awesome especially under the pump. One of lucas' goals came from a blatant free kick anyway (hands in the back)

Grover seems to thrive when the overall pressure of the game is at a higher intensity. He seems to play a lot better when the veins and adrenaline is pumping. The best thing for him is to have a scrappy contest early in the game so he can throw himself at it and get fired up...

Grover is an average player. Not awful, only average.

Will never be a game breaker sadly.

?????????????????

Rarely a back is... there is still 2 thirds of the field to go when they get the ball... Other than maybe Mcleod, there is no other back i can think of who legitimately breaks open a game and wins it.

Well no, but he's rubbish.. having said that, he's not alone.

Gee, really disagree with you there. At our last 2 home games he's been in the top 5 players in our team.

There's guys who are rubbish every week who get regular games. He's definately not one of them.

He was brilliant today, but he is only a slightly above average backman at best. Well worth his spot in the team, and is the sort of guy that would look a million bucks playing in a good side, because he'd be a 3rd or 4th string key defender and have the midfield cutting off supply. But let's not overrate him too much guys.

However, with McPharlin out he had a huge job to do today and stepped up accordingly. But he needs to know that he has to play like that every week. God knows we'll need it next game.
