That’s a really good point that I hadn’t considered. Either way 3 x 1st will be involved no matter what. You are correct but the goal posts have been moved now.
Future pick trading was introduced the year Danger moved and no one had done it and only 1 year for Cameron. We saw how much more willing clubs are to trade future picks now that you can 2 years in advance in the latest trade period.
1st rounder for Sanders from ADEPeople comparing trades from several years ago are forgetting that there is now evidently an inflation on value due to being able to trade futures 2 years, as well as the new systems with bidding making bids cost more amongst other variables and factors. That, and Tasmania coming in too.
What Jeremy Cameron or Dangerfield were valued in a forced trade during free agency, can't be used as a base any more, instead, it's higher and more value now.
If Butters does decide to go, and picks which ever club he picks, Port will definitely not be bent over the barrel on that trade regardless.
Carlton won't have the picks unless they don't get Walker or they trade out other players worth something to other clubs for value. Example, Walsh, who is a restricted free agent they could get compo for or force trade for more. Carlton saying they'll use bad picks and future 1sts etc because they need their 1st rounds and that for bid on walker is just ******ed.
Same applies to other clubs who may want Butters and he chooses them. The clubs that have the picks, IMO, don't seem like plausible clubs for Butters to even consider.
If the Dogs want him and he wants the Dogs, there's going to be alot of shuffling around come trade time to get picks in for his value. At this stage though, I can't even see how Dogs do it.
Regardless of what happens I doubt Port get true ‘fair value’ because everything that’s come out is it’s a football decision, he’s a ruthless competitor and will want a top team or a team who could rise quickly (if he leaves). So the picks won’t be good. That’s a really good point that I hadn’t considered. Either way 3 x 1st will be involved no matter what.

He would have been out the door already if not for Ken IMOWherever Butters wants to go, he'll get to. Whether that's Geelong, the Dogs, Carlton etc... There was most likely an understanding between Butters/Port that if he sees out his current deal they'll get him to his destination of choice without much fuss (understand they need to put up a strong public front).
If a player selects a club it is then up to Port to get the best deal they can.. So if Zac picks Carlton and all we have is a few future firsts that is all they can ask for.. A club has never told a FA to find a different club because we don't like the deal we are getting, it just doesn't happen.People comparing trades from several years ago are forgetting that there is now evidently an inflation on value due to being able to trade futures 2 years, as well as the new systems with bidding making bids cost more amongst other variables and factors. 3 picks in the late teens / early 20s or 1 x top 4 pick.. The 3 x first rounders isnt always the best deal.1st rounder for Sanders from ADE
then
2026 1st - WBD
2026 1st - ADE
2027 1st - WBD
Maybe, players are also smarter in just waiting until they are out of contract as it makes thing easier for their club of choice to complete trades. The Dogs have unfortunately been on the wrong side of it with Dunkley and Smith (neither were RFAs so couldn't even match). He would have been out the door already if not for Ken IMO
For all his faults , Hinkley had a pull
Players loved playing under him
The fact some whatever they get will be soaked up Cochrane too may come into their thought process3 picks in the late teens / early 20s or 1 x top 4 pick.. The 3 x first rounders isnt always the best deal.
OMG I get to be that person!3 picks in the late teens / early 20s or 1 x top 4 pick.. The 3 x first rounders isnt always the best deal.
OMG I get to be that person!
If that’s the offer. Butters better get his head around playing for the Eagles or bottom placed VIC club. You’re correct 1 x early pick is better than multiple in the mid 20’s of compromised drafts.
It won’t come to that though, this will be agreed upon well in advance I’d think. Too much at stake for all parties.
Exactly, once he announces his club of choice he'll get there, though they'll leave it until 'deadline day' so trade radio can milk it for all its worth. Get ready for hours of 'maybe the Bombers or Tigers can throw there hat in the ring' talk come September.OMG I get to be that person!

It’s honestly ridiculous. Trading without consent should have been introduced (within reason) when Free Agency was to line up with the US sports if they are soo keen to follow in those footsteps.I watched our BnF (Dunkley) walk for **** all then thought it couldn't happen again when Smith wanted out but yep.
Players hold too much power
‘Will this club that he’s not interested in and doesn’t have a finalised contract and he hasn’t done a medical with throw their hat in last second…..I think it could happen so people don’t tune out’.Exactly, once he announces his club of choice he'll get there, though they'll leave it until 'deadline day' so trade radio can milk it for all its worth. Except that I imagine he would be looking for a side that could immediately compete.‘Will this club that he’s not interested in and doesn’t have a finalised contract and he hasn’t done a medical with throw their hat in last second…..I think it could happen so people don’t tune out’.
I actually genuinely think the Tigers is a good spot. Loads of cap space, crazy amount of early picks already and he could walk in and be captain and I doubt too many people would flinch because he should be Ports captain.
Why can’t you see how Dogs do it? They’ve got 3 first round picks to play with, before considering potential departures like SandersPeople comparing trades from several years ago are forgetting that there is now evidently an inflation on value due to being able to trade futures 2 years, as well as the new systems with bidding making bids cost more amongst other variables and factors. Outside of anything else, Essendon would be way down the list of clubs he would choose to go to. They cannot out pay Port, and they cannot offer him success. So why would he go there?
Oh yeah I think it’s out of Hawks/Dogs/Cats and Pies as a dark horse. I just think the Tigers would be worth consideration if I was him.Except that I imagine he would be looking for a side that could immediately compete.
Ahhhh Port offered Butters 1.8 and NWM 1.8. I’m not sure of much footy wise but I’m confident you can’t outbid us here.we 100% absolutely can out pay Port..We are quite literally only just making the required minimum cap spend.
The problem is we are very very very shit.
And that is why Butters is unlikely for us.
Money is not the issue, being inherently shit is.

I mean unless you offer him $5 mill a year I’m correct. You won’t outbid us.you'd be wrong, look at our list rofl. Aside from Merrett, no one is even near 1 mil. its why we offered massive front loaded contracts to guys like mckay. We are barely making the minimum cap spend.
no other club would have anywhere near the cap space we have
again money isn't the issue for Essendon, being shit is. And its rare players like butters, go to shit teams.

Look at our list there’s no one senior left outside of Wines/DBJ/Aliir. We have a few highly paid guys then a heap of cheap contracts. We also cleared Boak/Burton/Rioli/Finlayson salaries this year alone.
If that helps you sleep at night cool but you wouldn’t. No point debating because we won’t see eye to eye on this point.im just talking about available money. if it came down to a dead set bidding war, you'd lose comfortably.
but i doubt we chase butters too hard as there's zero point overpaying based on our list. Butters will probably want to go to a competing team anyway, which aint us.
