The pressure former parliamentary speaker Peter Slipper faced over fraud allegations drove him to try to take his life, a Canberra court has heard.
Mr Slipper's defence lawyers are seeking to have charges against him dismissed on mental health grounds in the ACT Magistrate's Court.

Mr Slipper appeared in court, with a cast on his right arm, for the hearing on Wednesday.

His treating psychiatrist said Mr Slipper had experienced feelings of worthlessness and hopelessness and "ruminated endlessly on his situation", the court heard.

Mr Slipper had also turned to alcohol to deal with his problems and had "a sense that he has no way out of his current predicament".

The psychiatrist told the court he had diagnosed Mr Slipper with a major depressive disorder.
In a report, he said his patient had become a "social pariah" and had withdrawn from personal relationships. He also rarely went out in public because he feared public recognition and ridicule.

In fact, the closer the trial date approached and the more the appeals failed the more depressed our Slippery got. Why is this so? Will go down as one of life's great mysteries.

Former parliamentary speaker Peter Slipper has won the right to use evidence showing he did not act unusually when recording details of three taxpayer-funded trips to Canberra wineries in 2010.

Slipper has been accused of acting dishonestly on the three trips paid for using government-issued Cabcharge vouchers.

It is alleged about $1000 worth of vouchers were used for trips to Canberra-region wineries in 2010, before Slipper was Speaker of the House of Representatives.
