Agree 100%
Freo forward line has nothing, Tabs has been a crab since the first day he walked in the door, add on his injury issues. Our smalls have been giving us nothing, no pressure, they seem to be invisible when the ball is on the deck. We have absolutely no mid or reasonable size player who is capable of taking a mark, not a hint of X factor anywhere. Darling or Zuurhar type would assist us massively.
How do you get in the AA squad by being a crab from day 1? Much higher probability of a crab playing in a premiership side. How do you be in the top 3 or so for contested marks for several years running by being a crab? Rising star nominee. Gotta be at least something there. Sure, he may be terribly out of form or carrying an injury at the moment but 'always been a crab' doesn't make sense at all and with respect, gives little credibility to your posts. Sounds like there's something else going on. I do agree if you're talking about him being inconsistent and injury prone because that's actually fact.

And while the tall forwards are part of the whole forward problem, it really is only part. Mids have been bombing it and not lowering the eyes for decades now. When they do lower the eyes, delivery is often awful. There is almost zero defensive pressure in the F50 atm with Switta out. Walters tries in that regard, but is slowing. Sometimes I think, Colyer, Freddie don't even try if it's going the other way. Pop up for a highlight here and there but so inconsistent. Shultz sometimes pressures but in a bad run of form at the moment. It's a sad reflection when Tabs has one of the highest tackle counts of all the forwards. That's not why Lobb and him are there.

There's a multitude of forward issues. People still see Treacy and Sturt as the saviours. I'm not sure they are and they should at least do something at WAFL level first. Treacy's just a kid but probably kicked less goals than Taberner over the last six weeks. Ffs,Taberner's even kicked more WAFL GOALS than Josh in that period and he was only there a week.

Taberner was picked up as a rookie. Not a high to relatively high national draft pick like Pav, Kennedy, McKay, Hawkins, J Riewoldt, Franklin, Lobb, Darling, King, Hogan, McCarthy etc.
Probably done well to have a 100+ game AFL career and one if not for injuries could have been 200 games by the end.

Wasn't able to watch a second of last night, seems like the sentiment is burn the joint down in here? I'd say we're just regressing to our mean, which is a good but flawed team that is still emerging and can win a final. JL has shown he can address issues over an off-season, and he'll have time to work on our poor wet weather play and dysfunctional forward line. We're just not going to win a flag this year, maybe some people were under the impression we would.

I tipped Melbourne 30+ so I'm not majorly surprised by the result, they are a premiership side with outstanding defence gearing up for finals. Pending team selections and all that I think we will beat the Dogs next week, they are a front running offensive juggernaut with terrible team defence which is the type of team we match up well on under the roof. Win that and we're well set-up for a home final against a Carlton/Richmond/Bulldogs which would be a nice result, but 4th wouldn't be out of the question either. Still plenty to look forward to.

Bless your heart deary, no chance, we are getting flogged.

I am not even sure we will beat eagles or GWS.

Still plenty to look forward to.

People have been saying that all second half while our form has gone down the toilet, I am not buying it.

Nah not that bad. It was a wet weather game, and we got schooled by a much better team. The extra hurt comes from it happening on a Friday night. We have exceeded our own expectations this year, and this was a serious reality check.

Sadly, I believe we will win one more game for the year (most probably against the bin chickens).

No MVP thread this week?

I loved Aish's game, Brayshaw tried hard all night, Henry had his best game for us, Young continued his good form, Cox killed Weideman, Mundy showed glimpses of his younger version and I liked Walkers game. The rest were somewhere between ok to terrible.

Hey,
Thanks for response, do they keep a stat for dropped marks?
One thing he has done is improved his conversion rate over the journey, very reliable now with around the corner shots.
J Lo presser I believe indicated he is not immune to/close to getting dropped. As should several others be, Schultz is going shocking and Colyer should be gone for good, however I believe been signed for another year.

I think our season officially ended tonight. We've been trending downwards and the dam broke tonight.
Most disappointing for me are the things that have mostly been mentioned, mainly:
  • JL just keeps playing the same underperforming players without trying to change the dynamics that aren't working.
  • Our game plan has been worked out and we seem to have no plan B.
  • We don't seem to even try to kick through zones anymore, just bomb it down the line.
  • When we do get control of the game we have no ability to construct meaningful forward entries.
  • We have no decent forwards, like none.
I simply don't understand why we aren't giving Treacy, Sturt and to some extent Meek, Erasmus, Crowden & Wilson opportunities.
Sturt has the attributes to be our equivalent of Fritsch. Pace on the lead and a very reliable set shot. He's never get big possession numbers but put him on the end of some players who can hit a lead and he will create opportunities.

Its at the point where we're sinking now, I know JL has talked about wanting continuity going towards finals but what we're continuing to do is get worse.
Shultz is bereft of confidence, Colyer and Acres have reverted to hacks again.
Taberner is cooked, Lobb plays a good game once a month.
Freddy probably still doing just enough. Walters hanging on grimly.

Surely trying Treacy, Erasmus and Sturt in the forward half is on the cards now. It can't be any worse.
Chapman is going to be a very good player but right now Wilson offers more.
Meek should play.
Acres out for O'Driscoll.

Couldn't put it better myself - as usual E Shed

Nice synopsis - must win at least two of the remaining home and away games first. I think they can regroup and do it. Fife’s inclusion will help them galvanise a harder type of forward contested ball that they need. Teams must evolve to meet the challenges of the season and finals pressure.

I should have added the real problem is that Freo don't have enough high class players. They can play very well when conditions are perfect and everyone is on song. When playing in less than perfect conditions or when form is off a touch we don't have enough spread of individual quality to hold it together. It's called not having the cattle.

Cox had melksham who had 4 shots on goal. Pearce had weid who had one touch for the game. Not sure why everyone is piling on him this game.

Don't really understand the AP hate tbh. There was the one awful 1v1 he lost to weid but I thought he was definitely one of our better defenders. Cox, Ryan, chappy all so much worse
I don't get the Alex Pearce hate either. I have brought up the Alex Pearce vs Zac Dawson comparison a few times.

Zac Dawson was a very good one on one defender that stood his ground vs the full forwards or the rucks. He was a horrible kick.

Alex Pearce is a solid one on one defender that stood his ground vs the full forwards and rucks. He is a solid medium kick over 15-30 metres. He is confident in playing beyond the defensive 50 too.

Positives
  • Aish is a gem. (Let's not mention his goal kicking)
  • Baeshaw is just adorable. Give him a 7 year contract. (Let's not mention his goal kicking)
  • Hayden Young is becoming a man in front of us. (Let's not mention his goal kicking)
  • Will Brodie is such a good kick. Under rated. (Let's not mention his goal kicking)
  • We will play finals this year, it's a long season and we are tracking upward. (Let's not mention goal kicking)
  • The list is very young. (Let's not mention goal kicking)

Negatives

Ruck infringements
- Sean Darcy is constantly giving frees away for blocking. Why? This needs to be addressed, I don't understand why he is getting pinged for standing his ground while opposition ruckman jump into him. Gawn did the same thing to Lobb in the 3rd but it was fine?

Wing transition
  • Up and under kicks to packs don't seem to create a stoppage, more often than not we give the ball away and the opposition beat us on the rebound.
  • Why do we kick those held up wing possessions so high. It's like we are trying to hit the roof.

Forward line
  • people used to complain about us flooding the D50 with Ross Lyon, we are doing the same now so when we transition we have no one to kick to.
  • We can't create separation, there doesn't appear to be any blocking between players to put defenders on the back foot. Where is our Bailey Fritsch?
  • We need players who are goal kickers. Logue for all his positives is not a goal kicker first kind of player. Who at Freo is?

Defence
  • Alex Pearce looked like a horse being born sometimes. Just couldn't keep his feet and seemed to be out of position a fair bit.
  • Kickouts are still ugly.

Others
  • the AFL commentary is a disgrace.
  • Umpiring was pretty bad but it was consistent for the most part. We didn't lose because of it.
  • Sekem is s**t.
This is a great post, I came on here ready to rant and rave but I felt much calmer after reading this.

I haven’t watched the replay yet so I hope I don’t speak out of turn but some of the things that irked me during the game are:
1. Tabs. He’s not a one-on-one marking forward like Hawkins, his strength is his tank. I know that, you all know that, ergo the coaches know that, the opposition coaches know that, the opposition defenders know that, FM, even Tabs would know that. So, Tabsy, week after week after week, why do you let the defender engage you in a wrestle right up until the moment the ball is about to bounce of your face? Serious question.
2. Michael Frederick provides a point of difference for us, he’s quick and he has a lovely kick. He’s the sort of player that should make a defender nervous when isolated in the F50. His downside is that he is lightly framed and not overly tall. He doesn’t excel in contested situations especially in marking contests when he can’t get a run at the ball. So, why do we kick the ball directly on to his head when he’s one out with a defender in the F50? If the kicker doesn’t have confidence to hit a target kick it over the back, let him use his speed, this is exactly what makes defenders nervous. Don’t put it on his head or a metre in front of the contest.
3. Alex Pearce. Struggled in a marking contest with the 1 disposal Sam Weideman and is regularly beaten by proper key forwards in the same situation. Was roundly beaten by Gawn in marking contests. I like AP but it’s concerning that our number 1 key defender is poor at his primary skill. I won’t even mention the kicking.
4. Darcy. Maybe the umpires just don’t like you. Even when I watch the replays I can’t understand why you get pinged so often. I think it might be that he jumps early to negate the more agile rucks. He’s definitely one of the more aggressive rucks in the competition and the AFL is trying to limit knee injuries in the ruck. However, I simply can’t understand how a ruck can be pinged for blocking if they are standing directly underneath the ball. I could be wrong here, but I think the majority of those blocking situations arise when the umpire doesn’t bounce the ball straight.

I don’t really like any criticism of Luke Ryan, I think he regularly gets asked to play above his pay grade, a bit like Lee Spurr.
I don’t see how anyone can point the finger at the head coach, I think head coaches are probably a lot less influential than many of us think they are. Our poor performances are a product of a slight drop off in performance by a large number of players. Mundy frequently misses targets now, Schultz, where are you? Tabs isn’t kicking 7 goals per game. Fyfe wasn’t ready for a return, yes, I know he didn’t play last night. Darcy has dropped off.
Colyer. At the end of every game there’s always a player at the bottom of the stats sheet. In a slick winning team that provided lots of forward opportunities Sam Weideman had 1 disposal, albeit a goal. We are often overly critical of the player at the bottom of the stats sheet, but I think in Colyer’s case the criticism is justified.

We miss the spark that youthful exuberance provided earlier in the year with NOD or Amiss. I know they didn’t make big contributions but they bring a level of excitement, dare and dash that seems to be missing lately.
I’ll finish with Walker and Henry. Both make mistakes, both panic a bit with the ball but I like the upward trajectory of their performances. We need to keep giving them games and frankly I’m a bit disappointed that Erasmus is not being given the same opportunities.

We would of been better of drafting Keitel and dropping Tabs. He smashed Peel in the wet with 25 touches, 5 tackles 3 goals out of 7 and gave a contest at least.

People still blaming our forwards for pathetic "bomb it long" entries? Wow. Although this board weekly blames Tabs & Walters so what else is new.

Meanwhile Jackson takes one mark, doesn't get a kick for two quarters and didn't hit the scoreboard despite his team absolutely dominanting, but people on here will tell you he's worth every dollar next year

The following became abundantly clear to me whilst viewing the match last night:

1. The method in which the ball is being delivered to the awaiting forwards is just abysmally haphazard and without purpose or thought. I'm not sure if this phenomenon is a direct result of the opposition applying ruthless pressure upon the ball carrier, or whether the team's system is flawed?

2. Although every man and his dog is claiming that Matthew Taberner is woefully out of form (and he is to a degree), I'll be damned if he isn't repeatedly having one arm pinned by a defender when launching for marks. The umpiring of this is just appalling and the club should complain!

3. Melbourne appeared to have the luxury of being able to simply waltz the ball out of a stoppage via quick, precise hand-passing, which leads me to believe that there is fault with our stoppage positioning. Conversely, when our midfielders extracted it, there was no clear plan as to how the ball would be moved in an attacking fashion.

4. Luke Ryan is quite simply one of my favourite members of the team and an exceptional footballer. He was ill-matched against hair gel Barbie on many occasions though, and these contests should never have eventuated. Quick off the mark he is not.

5. It's as clear as the nose on Pav's face, that this poorly constructed frankenstein of a forward line, will never yield the results necessary to claim a premiership. Perhaps the Jackson trade should be shelved and all available resources and strategies should be harnessed in securing further specialist goal kickers!

6. Brandon Walker is an electric, excitement-inducing speedster who should not be dropped from the team for any reason whatsoever. I love watching him play, and may he continue to enact risky, damaging runs and line-breaking kicks!

7. Will Brodie has simply been a revelation in the midfield and his output is worth thrice what we paid for him. Well done to the club in extracting his full potential thus far!

When was the last time we had a decent forward line? 2006?
Yeah. Those were the good old days.

Pav kicked 61 that season.

Jeff farmer kicked 55 goals that season.

Farmer struggles in the 1st half. Then Freo goes on a 9 game winning streak finished 3rd with 15 wins and 7 losses.

Farmer kicked like 34 of his 55 goals during that 9 game winning streak. Good times
