Official Club Stuff Gameday Village ...annexed by the SMA

My question was a genuine one, sorry if it was misunderstood. Is the SMA's "The Fans' Bar" similarly set up to the GDV i.e. food and drink noticeably cheaper than inside the stadium?
My understanding is the prices are the same price as inside.

I had arranged to meet some friends in the GDV when the Fan's Bar was first set up. They weren't sure where the GDV was and having come out of the South Gate saw a bar with people wearing Port gear serving drinks. Thinking it must be the GDV they went in and bought a couple of drinks while they waited for me and were cursing me because I had told them that the beers were only $5.

I can't wait for the casino expansion, with restaurants etc. that would be accessible pre and post game to dint the SMA gouging at the stadium even more.

The SNAFL by another name, arrogant pricks still clinging to the West Lakes model of anything else nearby being pretty much non-existent, so you can do as you please. Suck s**t Olsen and Whicker, when the efficiency of the capitalist market has the product that gives people what they most want succeed, whilst the poor or outdated falls by the wayside. And it ain't your soggy chips and crappy beer. The GDV is Blu-ray to the SMA's VHS.

Nah the booze at the fans bar is cheaper than inside the ground. Reckon a can of Drought was about $6.50.

If only the AFL would get their arse into gear and start up a national reserves comp
I share your anger and frustration re the GDV. Olsen is a campaigner of the highest order.
Maybe like me you might take some comfort in what Rucci said in today's paper:
"Metcalf's return to the top table of SA football would lead to some interesting debates on the future direction
and structure of state leagues, particularly as the prospect of an AFL national reserves competition
does not disappear.

The Vic clubs basically already have this. Its up to the non Vic clubs to band together to keep the pressure on the AFL
to move the national reserves 'idea' to concrete planning to what is in my view a logical no-brainer.

If the GDV wasn't there, i wonder how many people would get to the stadium early to drink? I think the fair majority would just drink at another venue. I don't buy that people are spending their $$ at the gdv that they would have otherwise spent at the ground.

I used to get to the games 1+ hrs early when I didn't have reserved seats and the bar near me was closed sometimes till 1/2 way through the first q, so i ended up smuggling in plonk.

Maybe the gdv could close 20mins before the first bounce till the end of the game so we're not in direct competition with them ? I'm sure these are the quietest times for the gdv anyway.

If the GDV wasn't there I'd be drinking at one of the hundreds of pubs in the city and North Adelaide. No ******* way would I be drinking at the stadium.

They will be like "lets hike the prices, that will protect our profits."

And then no one with half a brain bought a beverage at AO ever again. We should be running the GDV at half time for the half time swill if we aren't already.

Bingo. Theres a half dozen great pubs within a couple of minutes of adelaide oval. No chance i'll be drinking inside the stadium.

yep can confirm myself and stchris have done the half time sprint from the nosebleed section in the riverbank stand to grab a four and twenty and knock down a couple of pales just in time to scramble back to our seats.

Where is the area inside the stadium where fans can gather in large numbers and have drink and socialise before the game? There's the area in the Riverbank Stand that looks back over the city but it's not that big. The hill doesn't cut it. That's why the GDV exists. It's not a Port Adelaide conspiracy to deprive the SMA of revenue. It's there to give fans a place to meet and hang out together before and after the game. The locals pubs have more to complain about than the SMA but I don't hear them whinging.

Less about depriving them of revenue and more about us trying to get a little bit of our own!

A night home game for port upward of 900 g's is spent on food and drink, for the equivalent game for our neighbors they "only" spend 600. So maybe instead of spending all this time trying to stop us selling $5 beers maybe they should be telling Dot and Pat they can no longer bring their thermos into the ground.

Just be careful which one you choose. Some of the pricing along North terrace is atrocious. I bought a TED at Basheer's Bar and Bistro last year and it cost 7.50 in a vegemite glass !!!! I do not mind $7.20 for an SA pint but $7.20 so for a 'standard' is a rip off.

Not sure why we should rejoice at the casino expansion. A beer in Sky City isn't cheap. I paid $9.50 there last year! In any case we would have to walk over the river to get a beer.

Our best bet in the event of the GDV being forced out would be to boycott the bars inside the Oval. That will not happen because of all the yuppies we have attracted over the past few years but it is nice to think it could. I suspect that we would only have to do it for one or two matches before the SMA revised it's pricing. My local can sell SA pints @ $6.20 between 10am and 1 pm seven days a week and still make a profit so why can't the SMA ? I can get mid strength @ $5.20 an SA pint so you can imagine the shock on the hip pocket inside Adelaide Oval.

Blatant profiteering and it would be nice if the Member for Cheltenham, who claims to be a Power supporter, came out on our side and made some sort of public statement on this issue. It would be even nicer if the Opposition supported his statement but as we know politics in this state does not work that way.

A list of pubs near the Oval with reasonable pricing would be good, maybe we should do some research and start one ?

You can buy a $5 pint at the outdoor bar at the casino, the welly will always have a beer special with a $6 pint.

Not a bad suggestion that, compiling a list of pubs with game day specials just in case something happens to the GDV. I know the Curious Squire has a 'happy hour' in the 3 hour period before the game.

How happy? The regular beer prices there aren't far off those at AO. ;)

We generally head to the Edinburgh Castle for some beers and burgers in the beer garden out the back.
Easier to get a park around there too on game days.

Speaking of car parks, my secret spot just off Hindley St West has been taken up by some bloody hipster cafe and bar.

I don't know man the price of beer doesn't bother me so I didn't take much notice hahaha, I just remember the big signs saying happy hour and it being packed before every game. Sorry.

Great pub that, one of the best beer gardens in Adelaide. I normally go to the Grace Emily which is right near there, until George kicks me out for being loud then we head to the Ed ;)
