Background
Jarryd Blair was given his chance, due in part to Tarkyn Lockyer nearing the end, and Collingwood needing a fresh injection of youth. His impressive defensive qualities, determined chasing and tackling, favoured by Malthouse in order to implement the "forward press".

Blair did nothing if not show the coaching staff that he was ready as his first game attests. in that game he recorded 16 touches and laid an impressive 5 tackles as the Pies romped away to an 83 point win against the Eagles in round 14.

Blair's average statistics per game for that season were certainly impressive for the "pocket dynamo" sized small forward:

14.8 disposals, 0.6 goals, 4.3 tackles 6.7 contested possessions.

These returns certainly impressed the coaches and the "faithful" as he retained his spot in the team for the rest of the season. Blair contributed well in Collingwoods successful quest for the 2010 premiership. While his numbers were not great in either GF, he scored a goal in first and maintained forward pressure in both recording 4 and 5 tackles respectively.

Season 2011
In 2011 Blair's very impressive first dozen senoir games proved to be, in a sense, detrimental. Expectations of Jarryd, especially by the fans, fuelled by those games were high. Whilst maintaining his numbers of the year before, he did not improve them greatly. He appeared to bulk up more and seemingly lost a little pace, he was able to return figures of greater than a goal per game. Frustratingly though he suffered from periods of inconsistency. Overall though he was servicable and ranked in the top 8 for tackles and contested possessions at the club.

15.7 touches, 7.9 contested possessions, 1.1 goals and 3.9 tackles

He started off the year in fine fettle, booting 10 goals from 3 games, capped off by a BOG performance and career high of 5 goals against Carlton. That night it seemed he was "bobbing up" everwhere with the Blues attention seemingly on others, Jarryd mercilessly put Carlton to the sword.

Inevitably, he was unable to maintain this early blitz and was only able to register a further 16 goals - including 3 goals in the wet against North (rd. 16) and 4 goals at AAMI against Port Adelaide (rd. 20). Generally quiet in other games it was mainly his defensive attributes that kept him in the team. As the finals approached there was increasing pressure upon his spot in the side as competition for his spot was intense - Didak/Beams trying to return from injury and the young recruit Fasolo also vying for a spot - with Krakouer in the side small forward spots were at a premium.

In the round 24 debacle against the Cats, Jarryd named sub, came on after half time collecting a commendable 15 possessions in a half, reminding all and sundry that # 11 wanted his spot in the side for the finals. He was fanatastic in the first half against the Eagles, returning 20 touches and a goal. In the game against the Hawks, proved servicable - 14 disposals and 4 tackles. It was the Grand Finald which really hurt - a paltry 3 touches and one tackle in an invisible display - not alone in that after half time.

2012 Expectations
His grand final game, was individually probably his worst performance of his 36 game career - one which he will need to learn from very quickly.
Jarryd is one of many small/med forwards desperate to maintain his spot. New coach, fresh recruits, tweaks to the game plan - all to look forward to. Maintaining his spot will be intense as the likes of Fasolo/Didak/Krakouer even Macaffer will all be eyeing off minimal spots (for that player type) in the 21. He will be in his third year and will need to lift the bar and narrow the gap between best and worst games - his aims would be to increase his goals to about 1.3 per game, tackles to 4.5 and possessions to 16+. The challenge is there and we all know how he met his first one!
