2010 French Open

Thought it is time to open the thread considering men's qualifying gets underway tonight and the main stuff getting underway Sunday. Can't wait for this slam and strangely enough it's more for the women's draw than the men's draw considering how open is and with Sam a chance to go all the way. Anyway, we'll preview that when the draws come out Friday.

Now, for the Australians in action in qualifying tonight:

Ebden vs. Schukin
Millman vs. Zampieri
Jones vs. Cervenak
Guccione vs. King-Turner
Matoesvic vs. Bolelli
Lindahl vs. Lammer

Can't believe Guccione managed to get probably the only player I give him a shot against. Guccione has been struggling since his comeback from injury so even beating New Zealand's finest will be a tough effort. Matoesvic and Ebden have no chance. Lindahl has a decnt shot in winning a match and Jones and Millman are playing similarly ranked players. Hopefully a couple of them can get a round win, that's all I'm expecting.

TV Coverage: All live on Fox Sports 7pm each night starting Sunday. Nine has those silly highlight packages again in the 2nd week so for those without Foxtel there are also other methods to watch online.

I'll create two seperate posst below that I'll edit the main draws of the women's and men's into when they come out Friday.

No, his ranking isn't high enough plus he would get smashed anyway. Now playing a hardcourt challenger this week and won his first round match. I'm happy if Tomic decides to just skip the clay season every year, or play as little as possible.

Guccione lost 3-6 3-6. Not that good of a result but he has had pretty much no match practice. John Millman won 7-5 6-3. Dont really know much about him. Greg Jones lost 1-6 6-4 6-0. He made such a great start sad really that he couldnt go on with it. Matosevic has just lost against Bolelli 6-4 6-2. No real suprise the Bolelli is a pretty experienced player. Nick Lindhal is playing now and lost the first set 2-6. After that match only Matthew Ebden to play tonight never heard of the guy he is playing?

Used to play for Russia i think, might of been top 100 before but he's a solid player on clay coming off a challenegr win.

Got to laugh at the Guccione result, that's beyond disgraceful, even if he has little match practice.

All results are expected really, we got one to sneak through to the 2nd round with Millman at least.

Sophie sneaked a win as well against Sachuk, so 2 made it through the 2nd round of qualies. Rogowska lost against screaming manaic De Brito, while Golds is losing her match as well (good effort to make the cut to make qualies). Adamzcak pulled out with her knee problem.

Millman in the men's will play his 2nd round tonight.

Awful draw for the Aussies.

Luczak gets Fed first up.
Molik gets JJ.
Dokic gets Safarova, who's been in some good form as of late. Doesn't even matter anyway cause currently Jelena would lose to almost everyone in the main draw in straights.
Hewitt/Nadal 3rd round.
Stosur in a nightmare draw with Sharapova/Henin 4th round, and Serena in the QF.

Rodionova and Groth a chance to advance.

Not much to take away from that, at least Lleyton was able to get away from Fed. :p

Don't forget about Ball, who has got Petzschner, not entirely impossible but depends on what comes out on the day.

Stosur has got a fairly comfortable first week, just from the 4th round onwards is the pain. Henin in the 4th round is easily the hardest player you can get in the 4th round, won't look beyond that to be honest at the moment, if she wants to be a contender at the Slams, she is going to have win these types of matches, let's just get her there first.

AND AGAIN ORGANISERS YOU PUT HEWITT IN THE TOUGHEST LITTLE SECTION AGAIN! I'm ready to cry, couldn't he of been in Murray's little section, that would of been much better. to be honest if Lleyton has hip troubles again, Chardy will be hard enough in the first round anyway.

Sophie Ferguson just qualified, 6-4, 6-3 over Dominguez Lino. Finally, after all these years she has qualified for a maindraw. Just hopefully she doesn't draw Sam.

Just got home, quickly scanned through the draws, and we Aussies got absolutely ruined!!! Wow, talk about unlucky.

Stosur's got Henin 4R, Williams QF. Wow...

get his ranking up or face the big boys early

Well, he can face one of the top 4 in the 3rd round, and just always seem to be that he face Federer or Nadal all the time, an out-of-form Murray and Djokovic would be nice for once.

I see what you're saying.

Still, those other 2 are monsters today compared to hewitt, but what you're saying is fair.

It is pretty amazing, though. Ranking where it is or not, I think it has been since like 2007 or 2008 that he's been drawn outside of Federer or Nadal's section at a Grand Slam (except Wimbledon where Nadal withdrew and was replaced with JMDP at the top).

Would of had to 2008 Oz Open where he lost to Djoko in the 4th round (although he didn't play 08 US Open).

Picks for the tournament:

Rafael Nadal for the men's, it's hard not to see him winning to be honest, Verdasco or Almagro is his potential QF opponent, he on't lose toe ither of them, ferrer or djokovic in the semi, if Djoko makes it to the semis then maybe he's found some form but the more likely option is Ferrer considering how well he's done this clay season and that should make it a prettys imple run to the final.

The other half will have some fun results, that 2nd quarter, practically anyone could come out of that quarter, I've got Berdych trying to step up at a major for once and making a semi but really there's a number of guys who can do it, Youzhny, Tsonga (even if it's on clay), Robredo and of course Murray but he'll have a hard enough time getting past Gasquet in the first (he should though). And then there's Federer, finally started to pick it up in madrid and he should contiune that, nobody tot rouble him to the 4th round with Monfils but that should be alright as well, I have Gulbis beating him in the quarters for an upset pick in my bracket but it very well turn that gulbis lsoes first round to Benneteau. A Federer-Nadal is obivously the most likely option.

As for the Australians, if Lleyton's hip doesn't bother him too much then he can get past a tough one in Chardy, who's starting to find some form again but if he can get through that, 2nd round will be a breeze and then get his arse spanked again against Nadal. Really, as long as the injuries don't bother him too much then that's all that matters. Luczak will lsoe to Federer obivously and Ball has a slight chance against Petzschner but I expect Petz's silly slices to annoy Ball a bit too much.

Justine Henin for the women's, the draw is open this year it's ridclous. Which does make it more annoying that Sam did get drawn in the quarter she did. I honestly can't see her beating Henin, she did a good job in Stuttgart and she's a shot but at the courts of Roland Garros, it's unlikely. A possible QF matchup with Serena would be a lot of fun but Serena will have to get past Peer/Bartoli first in the 4th round. jankovic is in the 2nd quarter and has the potential to ahve some fun matches, Wickmayer, Zvonareva, Ivanovic, Radwanska, Safina are all in the 2nd quarter but it should be JJ who faces Justine in the semis.

And whata bout thtat bottom half? Jesus, I've got Petkovic playing Rezai in the semis  Kuznetsova is bound to lose early, might be happy Cirstea is also out of form, that should be an interesting one tonight, Dementieva is also there, she also been in horrific form, maybe the pressure of only defending 3rd round points might help, Venus hit some form in Madrid and the rematch of that final could happen in the 4th round against Rezai and to be honest the winner of that should make the final, but in the end it's a lottery which resembles my bracket.

And teh Australians for this one, I've already mentioned Sam, I really hope she can do it and hopefully she can go deep but Henin is going to very tough in the 4th round. Dokic has Safarova, maybe just keep that away froma TV court so don't have to see that mess. Molik will get smashed by Jankovic. Groth got the WC despite being only one outside the cutoff and she has an interesting draw here, Chan in the first round is very winnable and then an out of form Safina in the 2nd. Not entirely impossible to defend her 3rd round points. Rodionova has a winnable first round in makarova as well, should be a close one. And then Ferguson's effort fo qualifing was huge, playing Kvitova in the first round, not impossible but maybe a level above than what she has been playing.

Starts tonight at 7pm, Highlights include Kuznetsova vs. Cirstea, Gulbis vs. Benneteau & V.Williams vs. Schnyder. No Aussies in action so they all make it through Day 1 :thumbsu:

This tournament came around so quickly I suddenly realised it started tonight and I had no idea who was playing who. Rather than check out the website or the online news services, I came straight here knowing I would get a better preview.

Thank you to matt 897 et al. I'm all caught up now, and looking forward to some late nights and some interesting matches over the next fortnight.:thumbsu:
