Any 195cm +, mature-bodied, 20-24yr old genuine key backmen out there?

Pace, tank and kicking need to be adequate at AFL level, but not spectacular. Genuine strength a must.

Byron sumner former swan good running denser would be a great addition to the s crows or port

Joel Tippett.
Had a few chances already, still doesnt set a few people on fire, was overlooked last year again and still looks a bit light (93kgs?). But then again, was in the SANFL team of the year last year...

Is he genuinely up to it? What are his strengths and weaknesses as you as you see them?

Just a really good shutdown defender doesn't get much himself

Tippett is better than what he was. He's an athletic stopper but has shown ability against the taller and stronger bodies. He's not going to provide significant drive as is the case with most key defenders but if looking for a tall who is ready to go as a key defender Joel Tippett is that better option.
A rookie pick should get him.

Not the highest level key defender but a guy who could do the job well enough as others develop.

Better than, say, Matt Sully?

Who would be your tope 5 state league guys you would be looking at as an AFL recruiter?

For mine I have

1. Dayle Garlett (WAFL)
2. Ben Browne (VFL)
3. Chris Michialaides (VFL)
4. Josh Sciopone (VFL)
5. Ziggie Alwan (VFL)
6. Kaine Stevens (AFLQ)
7. Matt Suckling (SANFL)
8. Ryan McKinerney (SANFL)
9. Michael Lourey (VFL)
10. Brennan Stack (WAFL)
11. Sam Lloyd (VFL)

Probably my top 10 guys I would be looking at. Really loving the work that Stack is doing in the forward half for Perth this season. Would like to see him tackle more, but his goal kicking outweighs this one down fall he has.

Obviously these 10 guys are heavily weighted to the VFL but a few guys capable of playing AFL football.

There are better players in the SANFL. Sam Gray is the pick of the bunch this year for me, even though he is on the shorter side. And just off the top of my head; Tom Langford, Jonno Beech, Matt Goldsworthy, Brady Dawe, Alex Georgiou and Byron Sumner. Marlon Motlop from the WAFL too.

Would love for you to rank say the top 5 SANFL guys Chris25?

Anyone WAFL followers able to rank the top 5 draftable guys?

I love seeing Ben Brown up there. He's a contested marking machine and an old favourite I'd love to see receive an opportunity.

As a top 5:
1. Dayle Garlett
2. Chris Cain
3. Braydn O'Hara
4. Marlon Motlop
5. George Hampson

I could make a list of 30 guys I'm watching at the moment with another x20 19 year olds. Some really nice more mature options I see some value in late draft this year with a number of guys who could come in and play a role for a team and go better than expected.

Glad you mentioned Jono Beech has had a really good few years with west and played well in the state game. Jono has trained with port before great hands and kick been unlucky I feel not to get picked up. Collins defensive game plan hasn't helped him to really show off his skills

Brandenburg Ohara has been tearing up and would be a good mid for cheap

Im actually trying to compile a bit of a list of top 30 players outside the AFL. Let's give it a crack shall we?

Who is the best player outside the AFL?

I want to throw up Josh Scipione. Absolutely dominating for the table topping Port Melbourne Borough. Kicking goals, dominating with possessions, tackling, links up well. Would love to see him get spoken about more. IMO, the best all - round player in the VFL (yes ahead of Chris Cain).

# 2? Dayle Garlett?

Knightmare, just did a quick google search of your no.5 there and George Hampson has gone through a hell of a lot?

Keep Your Eye Out For George

The George Hampson Story – It’s Incredible

George Hampson is no relation to the famous father and son combination of Reg and Damian, who both forged out great careers with Subiaco. George arrived at Subiaco as an unknown in terms of football pedigree; however his consistent form in the Reserves in the 2011 season has been something that has made the coaching staff take notice of. The pathway that George has taken to achieve his dream of playing WAFL league football has not been conventional by any means. Hampson played his junior football with Scarborough in the Claremont district. From that point it is an absolutely amazing story that he has even considered playing football.

I like the guys who have been through a bit. Shows character and an ability to push through hardship which more often than not converts.

Scipione at 83? Surely you jest?! oh, the bloke at 98 must be a distant cousin of Marcus? :D

Scipione at 83? Surely you jest?! oh, the bloke at 98 must be a distant cousin of Marcus? :D

Common now. I didn't pull you up on the incorrect spelling of:
3. Chris Michialaides (VFL) should be: Michaliades
4. Josh Sciopone (VFL) should be: Scipione
8. Ryan McKinerney (SANFL) should be: Mcinerney

Just saying :p

Largely with those lower ranked mature agers I feel many of them can come into a teams as situational role players who could play a role.

On Scipione specifically he's a small forward on the improve which is a positive and puts him into the picture. I'm unsure if he is more talented than some of the younger talents coming through this year which is why he is not higher.

A Sam Gray as an example Chris25 rightly pointed out as a small forward (more a midfielder now) has an even more advanced game at a younger age. So he would be one in a similar boat as a guy who is a few years older who could step into a club and be a touch better again.

Then others of different types who may interest clubs more. Jarrod Stokes may be one who outside of those top u18s could capture some interest with his rare Jeff Garlett level pace.

So it's really unclear after around 50 in my rankings who is ahead of who and will probably take me the season to figure out myself with that late season form and improvement coming into the equation.

Certainly plenty of forwards to choose from and it comes down to what you're after with the whole range of different smalls from the crumbing to the marking smalls to the speedy and defensive specialists to forward/midfield combo types who can all come into the picture depending on exactly you are after as those situational pickups.

Paul Bevan?

Certainly putting together some strong form up forward in the WAFL with some bags of goals while finding the footy.

It's usually harder for those 30 year olds to find their way back onto an AFL list. Orren Stephenson did it last year so you can't put it past Bevan to do the same for a club looking for a 2-3 year rental.

Ive been touting Melbourne to go after some more mature aged players after the success of Matt Jones, Dean Terlich, James Magner and Tom Couch. Would not be out of the question to see them again pick up 3 - 4 mature aged guys who could come in and play from round 1, 2014.

If you were to throw up 2 mature aged midfielders who could come in and influence AFL games next year, who would you choose?

Myself? I'd look at Dayle Garlett to play on a forward flank running through the midfield.
Ben Ross to play on a wing to be that genuine line breaker and a third mature aged player be an Adam Cockie or Brayden O'Hara as genuine midfielders.

I wouldn't bother with the majority listed there to be honest. Nothing more than stop gaps, who won't help a team win or really aid in development either. It's more about who has development to come, as opposed to who is dominating every week.

I was trying to find guys who could come in and play to a high level. Your suggesting guys like Hampson, Garlett etc. who could become better than ok AFL players?

Garlett is that more damaging. That's for sure.

Ross I like for the damage he does with his touches.

O'Hara I like more as a back flanker who can push onto a wing so I probably wouldn't class him as a real as a midfielder.

Cockie is excellent with his ability to read the ruck taps and winning those clearances.

For the most immediate inside impact I'd go with Myles Sewell and Mat Suckling. Suckling can go in and win me the footy. Sewell can play the best two way footy of anyone in the state league competitions with his tackling and ball winning both excellent.

James Magner if not on an AFL list I'd rate that best state leaguer. Likely to be delisted at seasons end with Melbourne likely to go for youth, but when given the opportunity despite not being damaging I have a strong respect for his inside game and strongly believe that he is a guy you can win with. I'd love to see what he could do with a Sydney or Adelaide as two teams I feel he could really fit into and thrive for. I'd say the same with Sewell and Suckling though.
