Oh, they can climb, but unlikely to reach the 8. I suspect more changes to free agency are on the cards, to try and get quality to the lower clubs.

Let's hope not. The competition is fine how it is at the moment. Teams have to struggle down the bottom. If they are bad they'll get the picks like we did and look at making changes to the front office and the coaches box.

Wow.

Just ruined a good run

Saints win a shocking contest and we can all ponder how the Saints and Dons will get on this season.

*because preseason games are such an accurate reflection of H&A success.

You didn't have to rebuild when the free agency system had been implemented and clubs were aware of how to utilize it. Clubs like St. Kilda run the risk of becoming feeder clubs for the top clubs, which means they'll stay at the bottom and the clubs who were fortunate enough to be up top when the FA system was kicking in will stay there.

Usually not, but in this case it is. If Essendon gets rooted by the doping tribunal, they're rooted on the field.

St Kilda have a bit of promising youth, show a bit of endeavour, but have some abysmal skills which will cost them often.

Yes he would. McIntosh isn't what he was and Giles is better than Simpson.

2015 will be the judge of whether the true McIntosh was on display in the first four months of the 2014 season, or the last two weeks. Either way, I would have been against having three specialist ruckmen, earning senior money on our list. I would have been ok with a Gorringe-type, if he'd been receptive to a move. Getting someone like Giles, Lowden, or another middle-aged player that couldn't crack the seniors regularly (for whatever reason) is a dicey proposition, as far as I'm concerned. I'd want a ruck at either end of the spectrum: either a genuine star, or a raw, developing 21ish year old that might be able to step in and play a few games, then make the position his own in 2016 (when Simpson and McIntosh could be off the list).

I've always been a Mitch Brown fan and Geelong is one thing, but I'm pretty surprised that a player like him, that can play as a second or third key forward, a high half forward, or a half back flank, couldn't find a spot on a rookie list somewhere.

I don't know about that. They've got quite a lot of promising young players coming through and they'll get good picks again at the end of the year.

They will improve, but the top sides will improve more - that is what Johnson was saying.
No one else has really touched on this. Roos tries to, but no one really understands his sly digs.
But free agency isn't an equaliser. Look at Hawthorn this year, they get a quality draft pick because he nominates their club, they get him on the cheap.
How many of the quality free agents are going to weaker clubs? Not many.
There is a gap, the gap is widening, we are seeing this each year - where those at the top remain there, they get stronger, the weak remain stagnant.

Don't make free agency better for them then just get rid of it all together.

If they just tightened up the rules for the contracts (correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that front and back loading to a ridiculous extent is fine at the moment), it probably wouldn't be possible for the premier from the previous season to land one of the 2-3 top free agents every year.

The way the game's going specialist rucks are going out of fashion. Ideally you only want to play one who is capable of having an impact in the forward line. That's sort of what you went for with Clark/Stanley, but they are obviously more forward-rucks. You've also got Vardy. Jury still out on Blicavs.

Agreed. Although him being injury prone probably hurt his chances
