I liken the draft as being like playing roulette. The difference is that at the front of the draft your selecting black or red whilst at the back of the draft you selecting a particular number. Both have their risks but the odds are stacked in your favour at the front.

It couldn't possibly be the same system as what the northern clubs have. The only reason we have the academies is because; 1) we can't retain players from interstate, and 2) there aren't enough home grown players for us to choose.

There is no need for this in the football states as the youth are already exposed to the game. The only reason I can see would be to satisfy the sooking from the football state clubs about our perceived advantage.

I'm not a big roulette person but that does make sense.

I mean let's just look at the 2010 draft. Whilst full of Gold Coast picks at the start, Parker was taken at pick 40. Would easily be re-taken in front of Lucas Cook, Jed Lamb, Seb Tape, Patrick Karnezis, Patrick McCarthy and others. Swings and roundabouts. It's all luck at the end of the day.
