7plus sets new Australian streaming record

More than 170 million minutes streamed

The first day of competition in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 saw the Seven Network’s 7plus platform achieve a gold medal of its own: the record for the biggest day of live streaming in Australian television history.

An extraordinary 172 million minutes were streamed on 7plus yesterday, shattering the previous record of 86 million for the State of Origin rugby league match on 14 July this year. The 7plus number does not include co-viewing data, which will be released later today, while the State of Origin number includes co-viewing.

The 7plus total covered 149.8 million live streamed minutes and 22.2 million video-on-demand minutes. As a result, 7plus captured a record-setting 93% share of commercial free-to-air live streaming, and a 79.7% share of total minutes (live plus VOD).

Yesterday also marked a record for 7plus in terms of advertising revenue booked in one day.

Seven West Media Chief Digital Officer, Gereurd Roberts, said: “We knew the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 would be a massive event across both digital and broadcast, but the numbers on 7plus have exceeded all of our expectations and set a new standard for streaming in Australia.

“Tokyo 2020 will be the biggest digital media event Australia has ever seen. If we are setting new streaming numbers after just one day, imagine what the next fortnight or so is going to look like.

“Australians have really embraced the innovative and incredibly comprehensive coverage on Channel 7, 7mate and 7plus, with a viewer experience and features that have never been seen here before. We’re delighted with how people are responding to our coverage,” he said.

A. Koroisau has admitted he covertly brought a women, on 2 occasions, to his hotel room, in contravention of covid "bubble" rules.
Could the NRL be evicted from Qld., if another breach occurs?

NRL players on notice as Jeannette Young says she's close to booting the league out of Queensland 5:59pmFriday 23 Jul 2021 at 5:59pm

Dr Jeannette Young says she's 'very close' to the threshold for kicking NRL teams out of the state.

The NRL's latest alleged biosecurity breach has placed the competition in immediate danger, with Queensland's Chief Medical Officer Jeannette Young warning she is getting close to revoking exemptions.
Key points:
  • Jeannette Young says she is getting "very close" to revoking the NRL's COVID rule exemptions
  • Api Koroisau is alleged to have breached biosecurity rules when with the New South Wales Origin team
  • Footage of players' families passing food between balconies also breached protocols
The delicate relationship between the Queensland government and the NRL has taken a further hit, with Api Koroisau under investigation following claims he breached a strict biosecurity bubble while in NSW Origin camp.
It follows vision of NRL families quarantining in Queensland hotels passing food to each other on balconies, breaching government protocols that were enacted late on Wednesday night.

The NRL relocated to Queensland as the NSW COVID outbreak took hold, and has been granted exemptions to continue the competition north of the border based on assurances players and staff follow strict protocols agreed to by the government.

Asked on Friday at what point the NRL's exemptions could be revoked, Dr Young said: "I'm getting very close to it."
"Yes, I'm very, very concerned about what is happening with these NRL players," she said.
"You would have seen that imagery of the family hotel where they were sharing goods between verandahs.
"If I have any more breaches, I am very concerned.
"It's for all of them. This is too risky. We just cannot have people deliberately breaching the rules."

The NRL was blindsided on Thursday night by a Daily Mail report claiming Penrith hooker Koroisau breached restrictions while with the NSW team.
An integrity unit investigation is now underway.
Koroisau was 18th man in the first two games of the series before making his Origin debut in game 3.

The NRL has already handed down harsh penalties for biosecurity breaches, including a two-game ban to Jai Arrow, who breached the Queensland Origin bubble before game 3.
The NRL also handed down suspensions and fines worth $305,000 to St George Illawarra players after a now infamous barbecue at Paul Vaughan's home.

Despite only three major Olympic events during the first six days of ratings week, the audience came out in droves to watch the two football matches and the Opening Ceremony.

Hasnt been a problem in 1956 or 2000, wont be a problem in 2032. Summer sport ?
Brisbane games are going to held right now in July

Sydney was September and the AFL moved the season forward to avoid. Melbourne was a December IIRC. I know it was in our summer as the opening ceremony was 30 plus.

geech. huge ratings.

AFL/NRL would best remember this when 2032 comes around. probably need a bye or 2.

they can easily spread a few bye rounds over a 3 or 4 week period.
either way, there will always be enough people who aren't really all that interested in watching gymnastics, synchronised swimming or trampoulining and will happily take in a game of footy

I'm not so sure of the need for byes, its not as if the telecasters of both codes will hold the Olympics, so they may well want content capable of competing with the Olympics - lets see how the next 10 days pan out.

There is no doubt viewing opportunities will be greater than we have this time round.

Its no wonder the Olympics ratings are up in Australia as they are in prime time not in the middle of the night or morning like the Northern Hemisphere ones are.!
