I'd love to see Gruz pop off this year as well...we don't wanna lose those top end guys coz they can't get in the squad. He's got so much potential too.
Reckon they just keep developing him as a forward?
There's no room for him down back, I'm not sure what type of role he could play that would get him in the side down back and he was nothing but encouraging his first year as a forward where he's more greatly needed.

Average age at Opening Round, 2024: 24.2 (equal 13th oldest)
Average games: 64.7 (13th most experienced)
Most games: Callan Ward (295)
Players with 100-plus games: 11
Players with less than 50 games: 26
Most finals games: Callan Ward (18)

+13th oldest/most experienced equates to equal 5th youngest/least experienced in my mind. Great foundation from which the team can grow, considering how we played in the second half of last year.

This isn't the right thread for it, but it is a bit sad to see a few boards glad they will probably be able to get Bailey Smith cheaper now he has done an ACL.
Hopefully our list stays healthy during pre season.

Our next All Australian is predicted by SEN to be Tom Green - have to say I agree!

GWS GIANTS club banner

Tom Green

It would take a brave person to bet against Tom Green being the Giants’ next All-Australian.

The 22-year-old midfielder was impressive in both 2021 and 2022, but truly broke out in 2023 which resulted in his inclusion in the initial 44-man squad.

Green finished equal second in the GWS best and fairest alongside Stephen Coniglio and behind Toby Greene. He was one of the more dominant midfielders in the AFL last season.

He possesses attributes as a bullocking inside player who tackles maniacally, can break away from stoppages and has fairly good skills.

It appears as though the sky is the limit for Green who is bearing down on a maiden All-Australian blazer.

The emerging Finn Callaghan shouldn’t be too far behind him.

Think Greens' ball use gets underrated because of his size and playstyle you typically associate that archetype of play with not great ball use but the last 2 years his kicking is really nice, does a great job of mixing in touch kicks to give players time to run into space but then also putting it on players in tight windows. Really helps the midfield dynamic knowing that your main CBA midfielder is a good user as well, makes it easier to fit guys around him even though most of the midfield are good users.

What about Harry H. He was pretty good as backup ruck last year, was doing it when Toby kicked the winner vs swans.
Perhaps an option is for ruck to be say 80 % Briggs, then 10% Harry, 10% somebody else.
That way Harry still has plenty of time back.
If Briggs is injured or not playing well for some reason , we have to make do.
Maybe someone else steps up?
Preuss only plays when Briggs is injured imo

Toby was on SEN talked about
  • Daniels and Jones potentially playing more midfield this year
  • McMullin was mentioned as someone thats improved and might get a bit more of a look in
  • Big wraps on Finn looks to have gone to a new level
  • Mentioned Cadman put on a bit of size and thinks he'll have more of an impact this year

SEN quoting our Toby on the young and upcoming players who can take us to the next level this year.

Captain Toby Greene has identified several Giants who he feels can further improve the side, highlighting both Idun and Callaghan as players who can still find another level.

“I think Connor (Idun) can still go to another level and I think he will,” Greene said on SEN Breakfast.

“Guys like Darcy Jones, Toby McMullin has come back really fit and will be pushing to play as well.

“Finn (Callaghan) has taken another step as well. He’s absolutely flying.

“Ryan Angwin again on the wings. We were doing 150s the other day and it’s pretty incredible to see some of these boys running around.

Won't be surprised if Cumming is pushed out of the best 23 by Angwin.

Won't be surprised if Cumming is pushed out of the best 23 by Angwin.
Angwin legitimately has not looked like an AFL player 3 years into his career, not someone who is particularly prolific in the 2s and when he plays with the seniors goes unsighted a lot. Cumming wasn't that good on the wing in the backend of last year but lets see if Angwin can look like an AFL player first before he starts kicking people out of the best 22.

The contest for the wing roles is going to be fascinating in the lead-up to this season.

You've have 2 spots. So 2 out of Callaghan, Cumming, Angwin, Haynes, Fahey, Hamilton, Wehr.

Gets even more interesting if Callaghan moves to a more inside role.
