This means that Carlisle plays deep and Daniher works up the ground. Will work better with relative body sizes for a season or two. However, if we can have a number of fringe 20-23 year olds come on this year we'll have something to trade to get a KPF which will send Carlisle down back with Hooker and Hurley to be third tall down back. I still fantasise of a backline with Hooker taking the gorilla, Hurley taking 2nd/3rd tall and Carlisle taking either the resting ruck or someone he can float off and WADA style interrupt opposition attacks.

With Hibberd and Dempsey running off that with attack and Baguely as the lock down man it'll be pretty amazing. However, with Demps around 29 he'll be replaced by the time that happens I guess as it'll require a filled out Daniher controlling the forward 50 with support from a resting ruck while Ambrose plays hit up man. I imagine that Daniher will require another 2 preseasons to really fill out and Ambrose similarly will require some footy development.

The ability to swing Hurley and Carlisle forward will be massive for our squad. If it's getting tight and we need a bunch of monster grabs deep in the forward line then it's Jakey boy, if we decide that we need some energy with run and impact from half forward it's Hurls.

Also from a team balance perspective if, assuming no Fletch, Gwilt really comes on and can play the role that Hurls did last year then perhaps swinging Hurls to half forward with Ambrose playing some VFL will work well for the team.

Dempsey's the type of player you can make him last another 2 years by making him a professional sub

Didn't work twice. He puts too much pressure on himself. He is best served when he can work himself into the game. I think we can expect another three seasons out of Dempsey.

ESSENDON key forward Jake Carlisle is expected to follow in Dyson Heppell’s footsteps and recommit to the Bombers.

Carlisle, 23, looms as the next priority signing for Essendon after Heppell last week agreed to a new five-year deal, helping stamp the dreadlocked ball magnet as the Bombers’ next captain.

The club is confident of retaining Carlisle and could entice him to sign a long-term deal early in the season, to help thwart off any big-money approaches from rivals, later in the year.

He is seen as a vital cog in the club’s forward setup, alongside prized young tall Joe Daniher.

The blue-chip swingman’s contract expires at season’s end.

Carlisle isn't done yet but hopefully will be before the season starts.

Not yet done. But he will be staying, and you'll be seeing him in Essendon colours for a long time to come.
