Well and truly demonstrated why he hasn't been picked prior to this week. Was blowing hard in the first quarter, nowhere near the fitness required.
But I'm sure it's still somehow Hird's fault.

Hardly even noticed him yesterday.

Kept thinking, now I know why he hasn't been picked prior to yesterday.

Taps were ineffective, couldn't mark, and really wasn't running that much either from what I could see.

Yet based on a more quantifiable analysis - at least compared to 'was blowing hard' - it turns out he was one of our better performers and shaded his direct opponent. How many times has than happened this year?

Don't give a stuff what the 'player ratings' say. He is clearly struggling for fitness and it's r18. What would his fitness have looked like earlier in the year?

He played consistently OK against Dogs. He hit ball directly to Heppell time an time again in centre square and they were unable to do anything with it.

He had a few minutes in 3rd quarter where his tap outs were misdirected but apart from that, it was a good display.

He gave away considerably fewer frees than McKernan.

Speaking of fitness, McKernan gets completely stuffed in the last half. Hard having to jump all game when he is 10cm shorter than his opponent.

And when Daniher goes into the ruck he is completely stuffed when he returns to the forward line and stops leading.

Of course he gave away less free kicks. Giles was against a VFL ruck and we didn't have a repeat of that crazy week of numerous ruck frees.

Beat his opponent last week and probably our best this week. Clear upgrade on McKernan and should, if fit, be our first option ruck.

He played well again today against his old side, this is why we recruited him. :thumbsu:

Edit: I should add he will never be a good number 1 ruckmen against the best in the league. But as a depth guy he is fantastic to have.

Lets put into perspective - Very much against VFL standard rucks the last 2 weeks - He will have more of a challenge next week against Jacobs.

Below afl standard - we desperately need Leuenberger or lycett

Suspect that he could've cured cancer live from Sydney Showgrounds today and it wouldn't be good enough for those trying to justify one the key selection snafus of the year.

Giles was up against Andrew Phillips and Rory Lobb and was beaten in the ruck losing the hitouts. Sure he got some ineffective clearances but his marking was poor as were his hitouts. His game was overrated given the opposition he faced. You'd expect more from a guy with his experience versus kid ruckmen.
