Pick 80 Rookie Draft- Hawthorn - Matthew Suckling

*Hawthorn's 6th pick in 2008 draft.

Re-drafted by the Hawks after a second season on their list. Suckling's greatest asset is his long kicking which was on show at the 2006 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships where he recorded the most long kicks to advantage at the carnival.

Matthew just needs some beef, listed at only 73kg last summer, Stewie Dew same height had another 30kg. I know that's an extreme, but there's a lot of middle ground, Sewell, Hodge and Guerra are listed at 84, 91 and 91kg respectively. Perhaps his youth explains it, even though this will be his 3rd year (2009) at the Hawknest, Matthew only turned 20 last July. Gilham's inability to put on weight was addressed at Hawthorn, he's now 24 and has bulked into proportion to his height.
With the above mentioned, and previously well documented kicking skills of Matthew, not to mention the fact that he snubbed an invitation from the Sydney Swans, to come from NSW to risk a try out with us.....Well I hope it works out to be a long very mutually beneficial punt he took.

Re: 42. Matt Suckling 3rd year Rookie 2009 season

Re: 42. Matt Suckling 3rd year Rookie 2009 season

Suckling happy to be a Hawk

Suckling was in the middle of a major bungle in yesterday’s AFL rookie draft where their official website named another Matt Suckling as the player picked up by the Hawks.
The AFL website stated that “Hawthorn has drafted Matthew Suckling – but IT IS NOT the Matthew Suckling that was originally on its rookie list and is from NSW”.

It went on to explain that it was actually Matthew Suckling from Sandringham Dragons – a player who had been recently training with Richmond in the lead-up to the draft.
Wagga’s Suckling immediately received comforting “bad luck” messages, until he called the Hawthorn recruiting manager to confirm the news.
“My heart went through my shoes,” Suckling said.

Season 2009

Matt Suckling finally got a chance to show what a couple of years on the rookie list can do.

Played in the Hawks first round NAB Cup win over Melbourne at Launceston, Saturday 21.02.09. Played down back and after a nervous start got into the game. His long direct kicking a feature.

Stokes, Suckling nominated

Mon, Mar 02, 09 Rookies Cameron Stokes and Matthew Suckling will be available for senior selection in 2009, having been named as Hawthorn's nominated Rookies for 2009.

Stokes who played nine senior games in 2008 has continued to impress over the pre-season, providing Clarkson an additional small forward option. Third year rookie Suckling earned his nomination after displaying strong form throughout the pre-season series playing predominately playing as a defender.

Re: 42. Matt Suckling 3rd year Rookie 2009 season

In a meteoric rise, Suckling has been named on the bench for tonight, you'd have got 100/1 on that at the end of last season at the very least!

Lack of reports on Suckling lately.

List assessment: Hawthorn
By Chris Fagan

Matt Suckling
He has made steady progress. He played in the AFL team in round one after a really good pre-season. He got injured and missed five weeks with a knee problem. He played out the year with Box Hill and did well.
