When BB signs should we apply to the AFL to pay Ben Brown in an ambassadorial role?

Would there be anybody more marketable in the Tassie market.

Or does this just apply to QLD and Syd markets?

I mentioned that idea a while ago. He would be perfect. As part of the role get him involved in the academy as well. He would love that seeing as he has his journalism degree (football writing option) and sees himself as a potential list manager (work with kids trying to enter the system).

It's genuinely a win/win/win for the AFL, for North, and for Ben.

My boy works part time in a supermaket that BBB frequented.............Boys work mates at said supermarket give my boy the heads up that BBB in isle 2 ........ My boy makes his way to isle 2 and plucks up the courage to say Hi...........No s**t BBB is totally awesome sends his misses off to do the rest of the shopping and spends the next 10 minutes talking to my boy.................Boy texts photo of himself with BBB thumbs up and all to dad !!!..........Dad waits with baited breath and stiffy for son to get home from work and when he does starts asking all types of questions like. "Did you ask him this, did you ask him that "...........Boy tell me that seriously he couldn't get a word in once BBB knew he was 'North' BBB was more interested in knowing about him than visa versa asking him questions about what he was going to do for a job, his favorite player, if he played footy, where he went to school etc, etc.............Boy was mighty impressed............ Dad still has stiffy................

Good post except for the disturbing placement of erection references.

Awesome. Needs to be our number 1 media guy. Such a likeable person and good role model for auskickers.

Yeah - he is just a great fella. Few years ago my my brother in law met him at a clinic at Ballarat, was impressed that he stayed late at the clinic just to help clean up.

Did he?

That's a massive plus in my book too. Doing stuff like that shows real quality.

Had a similar experience with Scotty Thompson and Ben Ross a few years ago.

When my son was playing Jnr footy I rang NMFC and they sent Scotty Thompson and Ben Ross to training they arrived 10 minutes early and stayed 1/2 hr longer. They were amazing with the kids it was such a memorable positive NMFC experience. These types of experiences are priceless........... I still remember when Ron Wearmouth, Ian Cooper and I think it was Stan Magro came to my Primary school about 40 years ago.

Ben Brown could be worth up to $1.2 million a season, says Wayne Carey

North Melbourne great Wayne Carey says Kangaroos cult hero Ben Brown could become one of the league's richest players and command up to $1.2 million a season in his new contract.

Brown's two-year contract does not expire until the end of next season but negotiations between the key forward and the club have opened.

The Tasmanian booted 63 goals this season – 10 behind Coleman medallist Lance Franklin – and shapes as the crucial cog inside 50 for the Roos for at least the next five years.

Carey, speaking on the The Age's Real Footy Facebook live chat on Monday, said Brown, 24, could expect a major payday.

"I always say you are worth what someone is prepared to pay. That could be anywhere, for him, I would envisage given what other players have asked for and got recently, he could be anywhere from $750,000 to $1.2 [million]," he said.

"That's the reality and that's what someone who needs a big forward that can mark it and kick it [may pay]. He is a very good mark and he is a very good kick at goal. He is a very good player.

"He will learn the stuff below his knees and ways to get the ball other than mark, kick. I think he did bring that to his game a little bit more this year ... he can improve that again and become the complete player, so when you are just not marking it, you can get goals and possessions in other ways. If he can get better in that area, then sky's the limit for his pay packet. If I was North, I would be signing him on a long-term deal."

Brown has consistently improved since he was a third-round draft selection in 2013. He became the focal point in 2016 when Drew Petrie's form slipped and Jarrad Waite was hurt, winning the club's goalkicking count (41) for the first time.

His role elevated further this year, and the man with the long run-up and curly red hair would ultimately contest for the Coleman Medal alongside Franklin, Joe Daniher and Josh Kennedy.

Waite was the next best goal-scoring Kangaroo (22).

That Brown has become one of the faces of the club will help influence his next contract, while a sharp rise in the salary cap this year under the new collective bargaining agreement of almost $2.1 million a year also works in his favour.

Dustin Martin's mega-deal with Richmond, understood to be worth up to $1.2 million a season, has reinforced how far clubs can be prepared to go to retain elite talent, but whether Brown is in that same category is debatable.

Daniher re-signed with the Bombers this year for close to $800,000 a season, while it's understood Franklin is on $1.2 million this year.

Carey, arguably the game's greatest player, is understood to have enjoyed a package of close to $1 million a year in the late 1990s when with the Kangaroos.

The two-time premiership captain said the Kangaroos had two "real key pillars" in defender Robbie Tarrant and Brown but needed to find more blue-chip midfielders. They remain in the hunt for Greater Western Sydney star Josh Kelly, having offered him a nine-year deal worth about $10 million, industry speculation is that Kelly will stay with the Giants.

"I think the Kangaroos played better than where they sat on the ladder. I think they were very competitive in the games they lost. I do like a lot of their kids," he said.

"What they need is some speed in the middle of the ground. They need some class midfielders and that's why they are going for Dusty Martin, that's why they are going for Kelly.

"Given they have missed those guys, or missed so far, we are still not sure what Kelly is doing just yet, my understanding is Kelly will stay, then they have got to go to the draft."

The Roos finished in 15th spot this season with six wins but lost five games by five points or less.

"You can see how quickly you can turn it around with a couple of really good decisions either through the draft or recruiting," Carey said.

I can't like this. He's putting bigger numbers in Brown's head.
He is worth $800k max. He is a great leading and marking forward but isn't as dynamic when the ball hits the ground. Not like Franklin and to a lesser extent Lynch and Daniher.

Maybe Carey rates Browny above Daniher and Lynch

He does state in the article he has the core of a great forward. Perhaps he sees more upside to BBB. I think Carey of all people would carry more weight in assessing talent, work rate and ethics.

On another point. Just love how Carey views North. Never digs at us and is always positive. Unlike some others.

He's kicked some of the best crumbing goals I've seen especially for someone who is 2m tall and gangly as, consistantly brings other players into the game (which might be a part of the reason Carey rates him so highly, imo that was really made Carey truly great) and improved at the end of the season - as some match fitness kicked in - in leaps and bounds. He's worth significantly more than Daniher imo and some of Carey's point is someone might be prepared to offer him over a mil, especially in the coming years as player contracts become more valuable and its probably worth it to them if all they need is a gun forward. We'd be mad to offer him less than 800K for multiple years, and probably sensible to offer him more for longer. Unless we said something like here's a 2 year extension on 8/900K, "you may be well worth more after that and we will pay it if you show us."

We've shown we're willing to hunt other players ruthlessly so we should prepare ourselves to defend the ones we want to keep.

Don't get me wrong, I generally love his writing but I do really think that 1.2 million is a bit of a stretch in this situation.

My thoughts are around increasing his value with articles like this where we end up with a Martin situation and have to increase our offer to retain him.
I'd just hate to see us go from 800k-900k to retain him and end up coughing up over a million because someone values Carey's opinion and decides that 1.2 million is worth it.
With the AFL trying to keep Lynch in GC, The Aints are looking for a Reiwoldt replacement, they would possibly throw 1.2 million plus at him.
I want us to bring in Kelly and also another A grader and hate to have that crippled by having to use some of the extra money to retain Brown.

Let's offer Brown 5 years at $850,000, announce the contract on Syd Barker night, and kill all the media speculation.

He's the player around whom we are building a forward line, a very positive face for the club, and he will only improve as our midfield improves.
