Any father-son/father-daughter picks coming up in the near future?

Like Trevor Nisbett ( Subiaco Manager ) telling Brett Heady to play not well in the year before his draft as Heady recently admitted too .

We were so shrewd in those days .

Allegedly we may have done something similar with Alec last year

The Heeney example is a bit exaggerated as to what you'd have to give up, given how highly he was rated last year.

Lets say that a club for some reason or another decides to nominate Jordan Matera with Pick 50 in the draft (by all reports this would be overs, especially if he isnt playing U18's)

Pick 50 is worth 273 Points
There is a 197 point discount for picks after the first round (Pick 18)
So we would have to make up 76 Points to be able to select him

Lets just say for examples sake that we had Pick 55 in the draft
Pick 55 is worth 207 points
We would have to downgrade that selection, to a pick worth 76 points less
Pick 62 is worth 123 points

So really, we would swap Pick 55 for Pick 62 for the chance to select Matera at Pick 50

Good system in my oppinion

My head hurts.
Another example, perhaps more higher up with Jake Waterman

Fremantle decide on draft day that they want to Select Jake Waterman with Pick 20
Pick 20 is worth 912 points
Apply the discount for F/S picks and we owe 715 points if we want to select Jake

Lets say we have Pick 29, and Pick 42 in the draft (hypothetical of course)

Pick 29 is worth 653 Points, so subtract that from 715 and we now only have 62 Points to make up to select Jake with Pick 20
Pick 42
is worth 395 Points, so obviously we wouldnt have to give up that pick completeley, as we only need 62 Points to make up

Under the AFL Table (http://www.afl.com.au/staticfile/AFL Tenant/AFL/Files/Father-son-bidding-system.pdf - page 7) a 62 Point downgrade from Pick 42 would leave us with Pick 46

So in layman's terms, we have essentially traded
Pick 29+42
for
Pick 20+46
But Pick 20 will be the F/S Selection

What happens if you have a pick higher than what has been allocated? So in your example we have pick #18 and Freo bid #20? does our second rounder get moved up?
It all happens on draft night, so we would have already made a selection with Pick 18 which would stand regardless.
If it was a situation like that, you'd figure the recruiters would just select Waterman with Pick 18, knowing that another club may be interested after

But yeh in that situation, Freo could really * us over if they decided to nominate for our F/S just after we had made a pick. Just means that we'd have to downgrade our next picks a bit more
But on the plus side we'd get our Pick 18, plus the F/S

That actually makes a lot of sense. Sounds like it could be a pretty good system.

Wow.. hrmmm that's interesting, makes recruiters jobs allot more complicated and draft picks in the mid rounds allot more valuable. Using the Heeney example.. say Sydney want to trade a player that year what is more valuable to them? a first round pick for player X (say pick#19) or two second rounders (say #32 and #36).

Pick#19 - 948 points
Pick #32 and #36 - 1086 points

Does Sydney even want to trade there player for picks any more? player X might leave for pick#19 which just gets gobbled up in the Heeney deal anyway. Sure your picks in the 30's are safe but eh..

Having just watched Draft Day, it looks like we're moving to an NFL style system with picks being traded on the day and teams giving up future picks for better picks now. Makes it all a lot more exciting.

So who's skipping the Eagles game tomorrow to watch the state 18's?

So if Carlton nominate mills at pick 1 = 3000pts and Sydney finish 3rd or better they are in a world of hurt !
With a 20% discount they would need 2400pts

Pick 16 - 1067pts
Pick34 -542pts
Pick52 -246
Pick 70 - 39pts
Total -1894 Pts
They need to use all their picks and trade for equivalent of pick 35 .
What then happens to dunkley ?
There is also the problem that they need to take 3 picks in the national draft so they will have to use picks 88 and 106

Seems way too harsh lol. Typical AFL move, from one extreme to the other.
