Had a discussion with a mate after the GF and we were trying to trace back what Hawthorn actually got for Buddy. We worked out that Hawthorn got pick 19 and on-traded that pic and Savage to St Kilda for pick 17 and McEvoy... but what then happened to pick 17 'coz Freo took that pic?
If anyone can remember, I'd be grateful
thankyou.

We got McEvoy, Pick 24 and Pick 59. St Kilda received Savage, Pick 18 and Pick 19

Then we selected Hartung with our first pick, 24.

If you want to know what we actually got for Buddy, then the real answer is '*-All'!....We basically threw our 'supposed' compo pick away to St.Kilda in disgust & as a form of protest!....Same can be said for Young & Ellis!....Though I'm sure you'll find Melbourne will be getting pick 3 for Frawley!

Clear enuf for you!!!???

What annoyed me most was that, according to the formula, Dale Thomas was considered to be the equivalent of Lance Franklin and both Collingwood and Hawthorn therefore deserved a single 1st round pick. This is despite the following supposedly being taken into consideration:

- ORIGINAL DRAFT POSITION ... both top 5, a year apart, so that's a push
- RECENT FORM ... Franklin was a premiership player who kicked the 4th most goals for the season
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ ... Thomas was injured-prone and hardly played in 2013
- MAGNITUDE OF DEAL ... Franklin = $1,111k, Thomas = ~$700k
- LENGTH OF DEAL ... Franklin = 9 years, Thomas = 4 years

How does that possibly equate to the same result?!

They should scrap the compo. Brisbane stand to lose a spot in the draft because Melbourne lose Frawley. How is that fair? To counter balance the loss of compo clubs should be able to trade out a player ahead of their last year if offered a renewal on comparative terms or better (without players consent to the trade).

Or maybe the top (5,8,10?) picks in the draft should be sacrosanct.

If you scrap the compensation, everything will get so much more messy. As it stands, no club has claimed their right to match a restricted free agent's offer from another club. But if there is no compensation on offer, departing players will feel duty-bound to ensure their current club isn't too negativly impacted and could start signing 1 year deals just to enable a trade.
