The chief executives of some Australian universities are getting paid up to 10 times as much as their senior lecturers, with the most generous remuneration package last year reaching almost $1.2 million.

The average benefits of the vice-chancellors running the nation's 37 public universities totalled almost $800,000, their annual reports show.
10 times?

Compares favourably with the private sector - CEOs/MDs earn far in excess of their staff. My last year at Macquarie Mossy earned $33.5m - and most of our senior execs were on bases of ~$300k. 101x multiple is far smaller than 1ox multiple.

Or is one of our conservatives actually arguing for the inequality gap to close? :D

Per month, not week. From your link:
"Average pay in Australia equates to $5713 a month, with entry level academics earning $3930 and senior academics averaging $7499"
Much closer to the figures I've been advised from lecturer friends.

What does their job entail?
Clearly this is not "general admin" - you wouldn't think there is some supervisory aspect to these roles, being the most "senior" positions?

I note you left out the other pay scales:

Lecturers, who have devoted eyars to their field:

Certainly not outrageous, unless you are supporting the gummint's anti-information agenda.

A CA with 5 years experience would be commanding $130k to $180k for difficult financial accounting concepts like financial instruments, foreign subsidiaries switching between associate accounting and subsidiaries with equity accounting. A 10 year CA would be $250k to $500k.

A university doesn't need CAs rather a CPA will do and the reporting obligations are much simpler. So paying 20-30% below market with better conditions would make sense.

I think that Tony certainly looks after his mates and they will always like him.
Came across an interesting article regarding Aspen Medical and wondered why they were given the contract to deal with the Ebola crisis, makes interesting reading. Although this news outlet would have somewhat of a 'left' leaning (to preempt cries of bias), nonetheless it makes some damning claims.

However, SMH has also reported on the matter.

After reading this, I wonder why the Aust Gov't did not put this out to tender? Seemed to come out of the blue. Maybe suggested by another mate Michael Wooldrigde, former Health Minister?

Does Halliburton ring a bell? Maybe Aspen are a branch office.

"We have very tough gun laws and I guess we can be pleased that he didn't have a more potent weapon at his disposal, but why did he have a gun licence in the first place? That's the relevant question here,"...derp derp

Mate if your are running an enterprise like Sydney or Melbourne Uni that money is not off the mark - they are multi million dollar enterprises

I know there are major problems with Iraq, but eventually they will get tired of all the mayhem and come to their senses that if you want to live in a civil society and their children be free of danger. They will have to lay down their weapons and address their concerns rationally. Surely eventually most will realise it cant continue this way if you want a functioning country, there cant be all that many who would want to continue on this downward spiral.
You claim the left is deluded and then you pull out this pixies live at the bottom of my garden story. You're deluded, a troll or both. Either way, you're amusing to read. Keep up the good work.

call me left wing but a CEO is just a job. I can only justify those $s if the CEO is taking business risk.

this is just a job and an Fn easy one at that given the revenue model has been risk free and thus it just a function of how do we spend all this money!

A great article but not sure he is becoming any more popular.
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/sep/04/-sp-tony-abbott-one-year-on-how-trust-won-and-lost

We don’t know how Australians would have reacted had Abbott levelled about the policies that were coming, and tried to explain his reasons when he looked down the barrel of the cameras that day.

But we do have even more evidence that voters react viciously when they feel they have been deceived. The question now is whether it is possible for a leader, and a party, to recover after breaching the trust of the electorate, whether voters, faced with an underwhelming opposition, can be persuaded to take untrustworthiness as a given.

The benefits of an educated and informed population.

Small price to pay.

The born to rule classes hate mass education.

'How can one do the necessary things when the unwashed masses want things for themselves?' I mean they should just accept their place, downstairs, in the fields & factories, or waiting to be summoned when they are needed to work.

Welfare payments? I mean what is the church for? Good lord, whats next? Women might want to drive cars or something!!

Just had a good laugh (sorry if this has already been posted).

http://www.news.com.au/entertainmen...s-a-bit-hungover/story-e6frfmyi-1227160213977

Abbott said he called Kochie, Chris (twice) because he was hungover!

Not sure why he needed to say that because when I first heard it, I thought it may have been because he had been speaking with Chris Ulhmann on RN the same morning, so thought it was an easy mistake.

Now, I think he is a poor sad individual, the gift that just keeps giving to the opposition.

Where did Medusala say that? He said the obvious that degrees for jobs with low employment prospects should not be heavily subsidised.
