COLA is and was AFL smokescreen

Rohan Connolly was talking up the Swans by pointing out that they have made 16 out of the last 19 finals series, while completely ignoring the elephant in the room regards the Swans concessions which have made that possible.

In light of the publicised COLA that finals record reads as embarrassing and farcical for the AFL, yet it still gets trotted out as though it's a genuine indicator of a good strong club rather than a lop-sided competition.

Gillon needs to fix the comp, make it equitable, then the fans will return. Just naming it 'Year of the Fan' is not good enough.

Whether an advantage or disadvantage, academies are still only accessible for certain sides. That in itself is unfair.
It's completely unfair that some sides have to make up about 80% of their list from interstate players and have almost no elite level players come through from their state. Ask any team if they'd forgo their home state players bar a few picks at 50+ if they had the chance to build an academy with the participation ranking and numbers of the Swans zone and they'd laugh at you.

Academies don't exist to develop players for all sides, they exist to develop players for specific sides - which is completely unfair on the other sides.
Ignoring the fact that none of the sides with academies are actually the ones with the most academy players on their list.

All sides get the same access to players in the draft, no matter where they are from.
It is up to clubs to create an environment for players to want to stay at their clubs.
Whether is a kid from interstate or not, does not matter, once he is in the draft it is all fair game.

Doesn't address anything I said.

Are you trolling or just a blatant cretin?

Sydney have not been ill affected at all by being in NSW, if anything it is advantageous to their cause, many players have stated they want to move interstate due to the overwhelming nature of footy in Victoria. So Sydney already have a competitive advantage over the Melbourne clubs, let's top that up by giving them an extra $1m to pay their players. Not enough, let's give them an academy to cherry-pick the only half decent kids that come out of the godforsaken joint.

I don't even understand what your question is getting to about forgoing players, it doesn't make any sense? As previously stated everyone has access to everyone in the draft. If what you are trying to elude to is the go home factor, when has that ever been a real issue for the Swans, or any interstate side really?

The bloods era is dead, what you are now as a club is a joke, plastic, manufactured success that will not resonate with supporters as soon as that success dries up. Can't wait to see the year Swans happen to miss the top 8 and they struggle to get 10,000 people to their games.

That period just so happens to neatly dovetail with when they started receiving concessions rediscovered Bloods Culture which had lain dormant for 60 years.

Nobody is objecting to the academies existing, just not in their current form with the Swans priority pre-selection of players within it.
I look forward then to the Victorian clubs offering funds and personnel to operate the academies.
What? It's just a coincidence the one team with COLA for 15+ years has hardly missed finals and won two flags and if they win on the weekend will be the most successful team of the last 20 years.
This has been said repeatedly, but let me say it again: Sydney's success is attributable to superior list management.

Of the four Swans in the All-Australian side this year, Nick Smith came off the rookie list, Malceski was taken at pick 64 in the draft, and Kennedy couldn't get a game for Hawthorn. The back 6 has, for most of the season, been comprised of ex-rookies in Smith, Grundy and Rampe, a bloke who couldn't get a game for Essendon in Richards, and a guy who couldn't get a game for Carlton - for Carlton - in Laidler. Sydney's ruck department consists of Pyke, an ex-rookie from Canada, and Derickx, who couldn't get a game for Richmond. For Richmond.

Shaw couldn't get a game for Collingwood. McGlynn was even further on the outer at Hawthorn than Kennedy. Kennedy is really the only player the Swans have recruited who could be said to have been genuinely squeezed out, rather than discarded, given the depth of talent in the Hawks midfield at the time. The rest were lured to Sydney by the promise of playing football.

Anyone can see the Swans are a professional set up, that is beyond debate. But it's plainly obvious that having an extra $1M (10%) in the salary cap to retain players is a massive bonus. Every team with the COLA has had sustained sucess and it's not a coincidence. It's a massive leg up on the competition.

Lets hope when they dismantle Sydney it is as successful as the dismantling of Brisbane after the 3peat !.

That's right the Swans pay for everything themselves, no extra assistance from AFL, I forgot!
The AFL provides $250,000 each year to all the academies, but the bulk of the funding for the Swans academy, more than $1 million each year, is provided by the club.

Speaking of NSW academies, there is talk this year appears to be some sort of bumper year for potential NSW draftees.

Perhaps the academies will work and these sort of numbers will start pushing through every year.

GWS – Logan Austin (Belconnen), Nicholas Coughlin (Albury Tigers), Thomas Faul, Jeremy Finlayson (Sydney Hills Eagles), Liam Griffiths, Brydan Hodgson (Lavington/Murray Bushrangers), Dougal Howard (Albury Tigers), Mitchell Mahady, Michael Mattingly (Corowa-Rutherglen), Jack Steele (Belconnen).

Sydney Swans – Abaina Davis (University NSW), Michael Dickson (University NSW), Jordan Foote (University NSW), Zachary Fyffe (North Shore), Isaac Heeney (NSW TAC Cup/Swans Reserves), Jack Hiscox (Sydney University), Vahid Roser (University NSW), Bradley Watson (Pennant Hills).

Just out of interest Liam Griffiths is actually from Goulburn and if drafted could be the first person ever drafted from that town, originally played in Goulburn, then moved to Canberra and then according to this article is now playing in Albury.

And this .....

Swans' school of hard knocks lines up eight players for draft.

According to Chris Smith, the talent identification manager for the Sydney Swans Academy, seven players from cross-town rivals Greater Western Sydney and five from the Swans were expected to be included the draft. He was confident NSW could set a new benchmark this year.
"I think we'll have a record this year," Smith told Fairfax Media. "I think [NSW will] have roughly eight boys who'll be on senior lists by the end of the draft - our previous best was three.
"And I'm not talking about them joining on a rookie perspective, I'm talking about boys who'll go straight on a senior list.

We need a fair and open draw. At the moment we have a contrived draw that heavily favours Sydney.
Before that we a contrived draw that heavily favoured Brisbane.
