VAFA division two clubs Yarra Old Grammarians and Manningham Cobras have announced they will merge next season pending on general meetings to be held by both clubs in early September.
The new club, Old Yarra Cobras, are set to play in the division two competition next season as they did separately this year.
The committee of the Manningham Cobras will meet on Wednesday, September 7 in a special general meeting, where a resolution will be put to the members for the amalgamation of both clubs to form a new entity.
A Manningham statement to its members said the decision was the best outcome for the club moving forward.
“We all know what a difficult season this has been and the committee is determined not to be in the same situation going forward,” the statement said.
“We were approached by Yarra Old Grammarians to merge our clubs and, after much consideration, including a number of face-to-face meetings, we believe the best outcome is to proceed with a merger.”
The committee of the Yarra Old Grammarians will meet on Monday, September 12 to form a resolution on the merging of both clubs to form a new entity.
A Yarra Old Grammarians statement to its members said they were challenged by numbers in their men’s team this season.
“This year has been one of highs and lows, with our women‘s team playing finals for the first time in Premier B while filling a full Men’s team has been a week-to-week proposition, often relying on past greats to pull on the boots and playing without a bench,” the statement said.
“With the overall club health constantly the focus of the Executive Committee, we have the following exciting announcement.
“The committee intends to merge with the Manningham Cobras.
“This decision has not been made lightly.
“Feedback was obtained from Life Members, the playing group, coaching staff and Committee, but all agree it‘s the best path moving forward for the longevity of the club.”
Yarra Old Grammarians were formed in 1993 by a group of former students of Yarra Valley Grammar School.
The club has won a total of eight premierships including reserves and seniors flags in 2012 and a women’s premiership in 2019.

Yarra finished in eighth position in the last two seasons of the VAFA Men’s division two competition.
Manningham Cobras were established as the Canterbury Presbyterian RC in 1945.
More recently, they change their name to Manningham Cobras AFC from Bulleen Cobras in 2009.
In 2017, the club was promoted to division three and in 2019, they were promoted to division two after being runners up the season before.
The Cobras finished last this season, winning just two games. Last season they finished sixth, winning four of 11 games in the shortened season.
The newly formed Old Yarra Cobras are on the search for a new coach and said “the merger will result in a very competitive club.”
The club is set to play home matches at Koonung Park, Bulleen next season.
The decision to combine clubs will allow for better player availability and standard of footy.

Did you get there today ST?
Best players?
Injuries?

I've just been at a heart stopper at the Pies v Cats and so didn't make it out to the Friars ground unfortunately.

Chump.
Hey Chump.

Looking forward to reading your preview of Sunday's game. For what it's worth I think a drop of rain might be forecast and sunny Sandringham might become windy and somewhat wet Sandringham. Does that suit WB more than Ivanhoe given the supreme marking prowess of Close and the other Ivanhoe big men?

Risstrom is a massive inclusion for WB and it will be interesting to see if he starts forward or down back helping out against Ivanhoe talls.

That said, it will require a huge turn around for WB to overcome your boys.

Cheers

Thanks for this... A bit sad to see the old side go. The 4th merger / name change since I started playing for the club in 1991. Hard to maintain the connection. The times hey, the times..

Not sure ST who the conditions will favour to be honest with plenty of good wet weather players in both sides I'd suggest when you look at the two grounds both these teams have played on all year!

That said, more likely to be slippery than 'wet' when you look at the Sandy surface.

Risstrom is a very good player and played well against us early in the year.

We also hope to have a few inclusions this week that pose some new challenges for WB to think about from the first final.

I think it will be a very tight, tough and contested game, not the blow out we saw last time.

Agreed. Won't be same feelings with the new entity. Interesting that they will play ladies and men's teams at different grounds.

Question is will they stay in D2 or drop to D3

Both BC and YOG stated in their initial communication to their players and supporters that they want to remain in Division 2 and have been adamant all along.

Unless there is some major reshuffle of divisional football, I cannot see that changing. The location of other D2 clubs suits them and it would be easier to recruit as a D2 club than a D3 club.

So Parkside and South Melbourne come up to D2 and only Powerhouse down?

And then there were two..............

All attention turns to Sandringham on Sunday to determine this years Premiers. It's been a tightly contested season, especially among the top 4 or 5 teams, and I am sure this weekends final game will be no different. Whilst the last time they met was a blow out, West Brunswick bounced back well in the Preliminary and will take great confidence from not only that game but also their easy win at home against the Hoers in round 16. The Hoers on the other hand will know that if they play their best football its a difficult combination to handle and a 16-2 record for the home and away plus a stunning victory in the first final should give them some confidence leading into the big dance.

Great match ups all over the ground as you would expect for a Grand Final and it will be a combination of little wins across the board, that the respective coaches will be looking for to give them the edge.

No teams out as yet (and I wasn't at Ivanhoe last night), so a bit of a preview off the back of the year that was .....and apologies to any not named :)

Forwards:
West Brunswick have a plethora of scoring options have have shared the duties all through the season. Buckle, Cottrell, Hutchings, Sawaya, Irving and Rizzardo all provide different scoring opportunities. Throw in Risstrom (if forward)and a talented mid-field and it's easy to see why WB have scored freely throughout the season.

The Hoers though have the two leading goal kickers in the competition in Close and Drake with a number of small / medium sized forwards that have gone a little under the radar - IMHO. Vines has had an excellent season and will be better for the run in the first final after coming back from injury alongside Lagreca x 2, Ring, Goddfrey and Pipakis.

With both these line ups you would imagine 12+ goals each is very likely, even in wet/windy conditions.

Mids:
If you thought the talent in the forward set ups was good, cast your eyes over the Mids - Wow Wee! (thanks Bryannnn).
West have great wings in Fithall and Ellis-Hills, with Stringer (gun), Fowler, Elston, Hyslop, and the Skipper Ferrier as good as any in the competition. The Hoers have great depth in their mid set up as well with Schultz, Jones, Servinis, Blackmoore-More, Selwood, Staples, McGreggor and Marks part of a set up that has served them well in season 2022.

Backs:
Turnbull leads a back line that has been very strong all season with Dillon and potentially Risstrom back at some stage. The Hoers have been well served by Doyle, Carter, Andonovski, Jackson and Geary as they have restricted most teams throughout the course of the year.

Do the predicted wet/windy conditions suit either team more, I'm not so sure as both have played a contested style on 'heavy' home grounds all year. This contest will be no different with both sides known for their aggressive attack on the footy and high pressure style of play. I think it will be a very close game between two evenly matched teams.

Picking with my heart again ...... hoers by 3 points!

Good luck all, enjoy the weekends footy.

Chump.

I think I have figured out who you are with the detail you write each week. When I was running in the seniors, a bloke by the name of Vill was scouting opposition teams. I also played against him late 90s, So I believe you are in fact "Vill"

BTW, why do they call you "Vill"

Ha ha ha Brainy T ..... you know that anonymity is part of the fun of BF. So I can neither confirm or deny your assumptions.

I dare say though, that said person you refer to will indeed be at the game this Sunday

I reckon I know who he is BT. And if I am right, I hope the bar is well and truly stocked back at HOE Park should his beloved team win. Because he is prodigious consumer of cold cans of beer when excited.

Back again with CHAMOS tips
Ivanhoe - Lock to win (30pts)
However a bit of late drama from I's training on thursday night with DOYLE (10) coming off the track early with a suspected ankle injury (eye witness).
However like chump previously said there are multiple other solid backs for I's (Andonovski)
Other then that keen to finally meet the infamous chump, will get you a few beers and if the hoes win a bit of coke.

Have you got the heart rate stabilised, Chump?
What an amazing game today, West Brunswick led all day and at last break 20 points up. Ivanhoe kicked 1 and WB replied straight away. Rain came and Ivanhoe kept pushing forward and Close 2 goals and Svarc with a snap from 25 out put Ivanhoe up with about 1.5 minutes to play. WB stiff to drop that one but Ivanhoe never say die attitude got them over the line.

Youngest bloke on the field at 39, Schultz got medal for best on in his very first grand final win!

Disgraceful from the umps.... how ASH CLOSE wasnt given the medal is beyond me.
That bloke is a *ing ROCKSTAR and deserves a spot on a list
Those goals were *ing CHUMPS TAKEN ALL OF MY BAGS and he is off with the fairys
