Essendon officially recognises LGBTI member group

From the forum that bought you: "What's wrong with saying 'NTTAWWTter' on national television?"
From the brigade who labels anyone who disagrees as bigots and ignorant.

AFL and clubs should stick to running a football competition and leave the feel good garbage to the politicians.

Campaigns won't make a lick of difference and change people...
ya gotta hate ... racist St. Kilda supporters at the ground yesterday.
Fellow Carlton supporters - first the tirade was about us all being 'hairy, greasy wogs', and then they decided to re-direct their wisdom towards an Indian fans in attendance.

It was disgraceful.

As a gay guy I am glad that Essendon is recognising our community. However, I agree with others in this thread that I don't really see the point of a gay membership. I don't see what purpose it serves other than segregating us.
And wouldn't you feel like you were being segregated if you were asked your sexual preference upon joining up as a member?

Not just to footy, either. But imagine you go to a local soccer club and tell them that you want to play for them, and they give you a form to fill out in order to register with the club. Wouldn't you find it odd if it asked you what your sexual orientation was?

It shouldn't matter, and I don't see how knowing whether a person is in a same sex relationship benefits the club, or carries any reciprocal benefit for the member who's ultimately just a face in the crowd.

Perhaps there's gong to be an explanation as to what this is all about?

Because the people in Canberra (read: Tony Abbott) are idiots with their heads in the sand about this issue and highlighting this sort of issue is the best way to reach equality. FFS if issues aren't highlighted they get pushed out of the way and equality never happens

The only thing it's highlighting is segregation based on sexuality.

Because it highlights the issue of equality. If you don't highlight these sort of things they get pushed aside. Simple as that.
By creating a membership for Gays only, it highlight issue of equality?

It's a support group, not a special gay membership you morons!

Membership is still the same as every other club. I'll still get to sit with "normal" people at games, and we won't be segregated into purple packs.

I've never read such crap on here, from such ignorant individuals.

Even if Essendon introduced free memberships, you would still find something wrong about it. Just another case of Essendon bashing.

Exactly!

What has anyone's sexual orientation got to do with the footy clubs they support, and since when is it the said Footy club's business anyway. The whole idea is just a cynical way to make money from a political issue.

Well if you don't see anything wrong with throwing words like "NTTAWWTter" around on prime time television, then yes you are ignorant. That's not an opinion it's just a fact.

Essendon needed a good PR story.

This is a pretty harmless way to get one. Personally I'm of a view that it's none of the clubs business but if people want access to a support group or what not I don't really care or see an issue.

i would like to think (and believe) majority of people these days dont give a crap about race or sexual preference but get sick and tired of minority groups shoving this type of crap down a throats.
If you think another club getting a new form of membership is having something shoved down your throat, then clearly it is something you give a crap about.

Watch all the PC whingers flock to this thread. As an aside, anyone know if their memberships are cheaper/have more perks than the standard ones? Definitely worth a bluff at if true haha.

Good idea.
"Tuazon-McCheyne said it was thrilling that Essendon was taking ''a stand against homophobia''.
''It’s really important when I take my husband and son to the football that I don’t have to hear discriminatory words or offensive words and I can feel safe and valued. And the Essendon Football Club does care about its fans.''"

How does having a particular membership over another particular membership make any of this happen? I just don't get it.
I can't think of anything more discriminatory(for all concerned) than having separate memberships, reminds me of the nice yellow stars the Jews were forced to wear back in Nazi Germany.

It's a political statement furthering the acceptance and standing of LGBT people in society and just another step down the road that ends one day where most people aren't ****heads about it and stop acting like it's not normal.

I'm fine with it, and some of you are tools.

The membership is irrelevant, it's the message that matters.
I agree, I'm all for equality. You just don't need to isolate the LGBTI community into their own membership group unless you are not trying to promote equality..

So basically the whole thread is based on a misunderstanding due to the language used.

The Bombers are selling membership to a supporter group in addition to a normal membership.

Essendon doesn't have separate memberships. It's a Supporter Group. No different to the WA Bombers or Pink Magpies.

Shock. Fauxfax gets it wrong again.

Godwin's Law. The thread is over.

I know the thought is in the right place, but to me the reality is much like the example I gave, if we are all to live together in peace and harmony why highlight whether someone is or isn't gay, does anyone really care these days whether you are straight or not, I mean there are good and bad people in all walks of life.

Then you have serious issues.

It's not a membership. It's a group. People will choose to join. Newsflash: Gay people are often proud of who they are and some might like to demonstrate this. That's their choice.

So is the Essendon's Women's Network discriminatory against both men and women? Is that an equally evil thing that must be stopped?
I have no idea what restrictions are applied on this club you talk about and I never said anything about evil in my post, but yes separate clubs for males and females is obviously discriminatory, my point is if we are to except that all people are the same no matter their preferences in life then having a separate membership is surely going the wrong way about it?

You compared it to Nazi Germany.

So you don't think Women might like the chance to socialise with other women? Have forums around issues women in football face? Celebrate certain women? Etc Etc. This attitude of "Everyone should be viewed EXACTLY the same" is not part of the solution it's part of the problem. We're all different. We should celebrate that.
