Ballarat, Bendigo, Tasmania. All locations that should have home teams within the next 15 years. Hawthorn being an established brand in Tasmania makes them a prime option for re-location. No need to build up a fanbase for a new franchise when they've already done the leg work. In addition I believe the comp is better at 16 teams so for me. StKilda and Melbourne merge and relocate to Bendigo, Bulldogs and North Melbourne merge and relocate to Ballarat. All now have there own home grounds that they would control the finances of (a la Geelong) with state-of-the-art training facilities/playing facilities.

But that would be the hard option as it would mean actually having an AFL administration that isn't afraid to piss some people off in the short term to gain over the long term. Never gonna happen.

Not a bad idea really. Location is one of those things that football supporters get ultra defensive about, but how many Hawthorn supporters actually live in Hawthorn? Does it really affect the identity of the team that much if they're based in Tasmania instead? Same club, same history, and if they had the same amount of games at the MCG it wouldn't affect the current supporters in any way whatsoever.

Affect the supporters? Well besides not being able to attend trainings and see the players regularly yeah maybe.

But what about the players going from 4 or so interstate travels plus Tassie games to then flying 20 odd weeks a year. Completely stupid.

Geez so for you, the convenience of having 16 teams is worth more than the 100's of years of accumulated history and passion from the 4 clubs you want to merge. That's just a cheap way to squeeze out under performing clubs. Clubs with passion and pride, and you want the afl to ditch them for made up commercialised teams bankrolled by the afl? I'm not sure about you, but I'd prefer for a team like the doggies or the saints to fight their way to a a premiership the hard way, rather than see teams like gws and gc get handed premierships by the afl, and I don't care how many years it takes. There'd be no such thing as 'equalisation' in your world, just a bunch of commercialised crap.

It would be the crazy option.

Who's going to pay for these so called state of the art facilities in Bendigo and Ballarat? Not every country town has the government generously build you a state of the art stadium.

Melbourne 4 million and growing. Bendigo and Ballarat 200k between them. Explain why moving 4 Melbourne sides in to 2 teams to mid sized country towns will be good for the game?

Hawthorn have more Victorian supporters than the Cats, much more. Potentially alienating an incredibly profitable brand makes sense in .....

Has football ever known a narcissist like Jeff? You can imagine his parting comments as he walks out his door for his weekly 3aw drivel fest. " Felicity, it's been at least two weeks since the Herald Sun called for a quote. Clarkson"s winning so I can't call for his head just yet. Have to wait for them to lose a game. People don't care if Melbourne are wound up so thats out too. I know! I"ll call for Hawthorn to be relocated. No one down there takes me seriously anymore anyway. Who"s left to fall out with? Tallyho!"

Collingwood should move to NT as well

Take the two biggest clubs by revenue and membership and move them to the 2 smallest markets in Australia makes a heap of sense really :thumbsu:

Trollin aside...

If you look at the Brisbane Lions as an example there is good reason for supporters to get "ultra defensive" about it. I get to see my team play live 4 times a year maximum when it was originally sold as "6 games in Melbourne every year". Not to mention it's nearly $200 for a Melbourne Membership, for 4 or 5 games...

In regards to the bolded bit, precedent has already been set with the Lions: once your out of Melbourne that would be the end of any agreement to play a certain amount of games in Melbourne per year. The AFL will be happy to put you on a nice TV time slot and send you all over the country for your away games. NT, Port Adelaide, New Zealand... As part of the Lions merger agreement the lions are supposed to get 6 games in Melbourne at a minimum. For the last decade it's been more like 4 (+1 in Geelong that you can't get to).

There is good reason why supporters get ultra defensive about moving location.

Jeff reminds me of that annoying kid at school who would say ridiculous things in an attempt to gain attention. They would start with something mildly plausible, then something stupid and then onto the absurd.

Jeff, you're not 11, go away and keep your mouth shut. Please.

If the Hawks need a new home they should just go home, they have the land available to build a proper indoor facility they just need to knock over the Ferguson Stand which is going to happen anyway then knock over the weight-lifting center, lower the car park and build the facility over the vacant land.

As long as the new building was lower in height than the Michael Tuck stand and the train hill, i can't see a problem.
Even if the site was usable, there would be no chance the club and the uni (Swinburne) could co-exist so close without MAJOR redevelopment. There is no room for expansion and no parking (can take up to 1.5h to find a spot) as it is. No way in hell any of the shops or the university would want them back there, let alone the residents.

hobart is 2x + the size of launceston .. if there is a tas team they will based in there with 3-4 games a year in launceston

if you are going to have a team in launceston you may as well have teams in ballarat, bendigo and albury
