Long Term Ladders - Most Successful Clubs

Nice. Collingwood's next 3 opponents are the only 3 losses on that ladder, plus we then play GWS for the first time. Have the opportunity to go to 33-0 if we can win all 4 games.

Surely the head to head home and away is conflicted by the fact the big Melbourne teams never play Geelong at Geelong? When was the last match between Collingwood and Geelong actually in Geelong?

Last time we played the big Vic teams in Geelong:

Hawthorn - 2006
St Kilda - 2004
Collingwood - 1999
Carlton - 1997
Essendon - 1993

At least Geelong still get games at kardinia. We play all our 'home' games at some horror boutique stadium that hird has only just realized plays havoc with legs.

If Docklands is a cause of players getting injured, then why have North had so few injuries this year?

Wow, nearly 20 years since Essendon played at Kardinia?

Once the redevelopment is finished and the lights are installed, we will be playing 8 games at Kardinia and 3 home games in Melbourne like we did in the 2002-09 period. It's quite possible that the big Vic clubs will have to start making the trip down the highway again.

I'll be happy for Essendon to play at Kardinia Park as soon as Geelong agree to play us at Windy Hill. :)

You guys don't understand how lucky you are to still have your own ground.

The fact we've lost the packed suburban grounds is easily the biggest tragedy in our game. There was nothing else like it, and now it has gone... except in Geelong.

It just took 61 minutes for me to post these ladder updates, with script problems and bigfooty crashing.
Whoever the genius was that decided to change this webpage from the efficient, easy set up to this load of s**t, well, you can shove it fair up your arse.

Cheers for the interesting read.

I think they would pint a better picture with finals removed as it skews the results. Teams that regularly come in the bottom 4 are more likely to simply add an extra loss, therefore are penalised for making the finals. It's probably better to come 9th on percentage (loltigers) than to come 8th with a better percentage.

Also, playing more finals means that you have played more quality teams than teams who have played less finals.

How about a ladder since the AFL started - no VFL?

There isn't that much statistical interest in starting from 1990. The only difference between 1989 and 1990 is the name of the competition.

Statistically, it's more relevant to do comparisons from either 1987 or 1991, because new teams were added in those years.

Interesting numbers. I remember checking out the International Test Cricket equivelant and finding it interesting too.

Geelong have been unbelieveably good. They deserve a lot of respect.

IMO, this is what the actual ladder, finals and draft picks should be based upon. A far more accurate picture than the current ladder which is heavily influenced by the FIXture.

But Geelong is a football club, and Windy Hill is a lawn bowls ground o_O

Really though, the small suburban grounds, although having some atmosphere lacked facilities the seating was terrible if any and in many cases the grounds were unsafe.

Huh?

Really though, the small suburban grounds, although having some atmosphere lacked facilities the seating was terrible if any and in many cases the grounds were unsafe.

Firstly, the atmosphere at the suburban grounds was better than anything I've ever experienced at Etihad, and better than a 1/3rd full MCG.

Secondly, I agree with the seating comment, but who cares? It was arguably more fun standing anyway.

Thirdly, unsafe how? (perhaps unsafe for opposition supporters...! But that's what made those grounds fun! Heading into enemy territory etc....)

This is getting completely off topic, but it really is a shame that it has all been lost forever. VFL footy at the suburban grounds had a unique feel to it. It was real footy.

Now, it's all gone. :(

I'm still hoping that one day, all the Victorian clubs (and indeed, all clubs in the AFL) will have their OWN unique home grounds again. AS IT BLOODY WELL SHOULD BE.

But I doubt it will ever happen while I'm alive unfortunately....

This whole "9 clubs sharing 2 grounds" crap we have in Victoria is - along with the uneven fixture, inconsistent umpiring, and the rules committee - the biggest problem in our game today.

And to get back on topic, is it any wonder Geelong have been so successful over the past 10 years? Yes, they've been an absolutely fantastic team of course.... but I'm sure being the only Victorian club with their own home ground hasn't hurt their cause either.
