what is a vpn?
Virtual Private Network. Essentially allows you to log on to another server (a private server) and all data sent and received between that server and your computer is encrypted.

In terms of ISP's, all the ISP would see is that you have communicated with a VPN. They wouldn't be able to see what sites you've visited, or anything else. But a lot of VPN providers aren't as secure as they say, or will give up information about you if they are compelled to by law.
