With teams hiring all sorts of specialists and going to the nth degree to extract 0.5% extra performance out of players I would have thought that allowing a player to wear long sleeves would assist in maximising performance. If a player is not thinking about being cold they can concentrate more on the game.

But maybe Hawthorn have better psychologists than other clubs. Maybe they know that if a Hawks player wears long sleeves he'll be more worried about how dreadful his jumper looks than going for the ball.

Laugh at it if you will but these are the simple intangibles which made Clarkson one of the best.
In today's day and age, it would be completely unacceptable (a lot has changed in 10 years). To link athletes wearing long sleeves with 'softness' would cause an upheaval.
He will have to tread a fine line over at North Melbourne.

It's easier to grab someone's arms in a tackle if they are wearing long sleeves.

All players should have their arms covered in baby oil Ben Cousins style.

I wonder if this will happen with the roos now...

there's plenty of players there who rep the long sleeves
I hope so.

Footy folklore is better with these types of stories:

‘In Clarkson’s first year back at Arden Street the Kangaroos journeyed down to Tasmania - for what was to become their last ever home game at the Apple Isle. It was minus 2 and snowing, but at a Clarkson led football club - where men were men, women had moustaches, and sheep were scared - there would not be covered arm and Clarko went further then the shirtless run in Canberra by coaching pantless on the boundary all game.
There were to be no long sleeves in game that many have declared was the making of the 2026 kangaroos premiership.’
