Its a good result for North.

How many teams got through the two new expansion teams and free agency without losing a player they wanted to keep?
Strictly speaking Essendon haven't (Crameri traded).

Monfries?
Officially traded for a 3rd round pick, although that was tokenism due to benefitting both sides more than him going rfa.

I think we can safely discount essendon. He walked due to free agencies. You did well to negotiate a pick.
No, he walked because he was offered a deal back home in which Essendon couldn't match due to BJ. In reality he would have left either way if FA didn't exist.

Ok - I will re-phrase to bypass your technicality. - North to my understanding are the only team not to lose a player that wanted to keep or best 22 since the introduction of the expansion teams and free agency. Add the great pick up of NDS and it is proof some good things are happening at Arden Street - retention/destination club.:thumbsu::thumbsu:

Bastinac is the only one left to sign this year and he is fast becoming a player that is boardline best 22.

Don't think Freo were too sad to see Palmer go, especially for an end of first round pick. Also can't see WC wishing they still had Lynch.

Lynch went largely because we would only give him a one-year contract and Collingwood offered him two. So we did want to keep him, sort of, but only for 12 months and only as injury insurance.

Depends on your definition of introduction of expansion teams..GC was granted a provisional licence to join the AFL competition on 31 March 2009 Josh Gibson was in your best 22 and left end of 2009...

Gee that is a stretch. 2010 they entered the draft and played football in 2011.

Maybe North list isn't worth poaching from? The gun players are around 30 years old or older and their younger crop of players in the 20-25 age bracket haven't developed as expected, Cunnington is having a good season this year but the rest of those high draft pick are stagnant or gone backwards with their development.

Will be interesting where we finish 2014. We have only 2 sides in the top 8 in our last 12 games. Gws wanted Goldy. We will win 4 or 5 more games in 2014 - we are going forward.

What ess would do for Monfries and Crameri. With such a poor forward line free agency has hurt the bombers

Oh don't get me wrong most teams would want Thompson, Swallow and Goldy but they are nearly untouchables for North. Thompson is North's best KPD by a long shot, you can't get rid of him as North don't have an equally good player to replace him with. Swallow is the Captain, very rarely does a Captain walk out on the club, who was the last/how many have done it? Goldy is Norths only AFL ready A Grade ruckman, you would lose too much if you traded Goldy and have Currie as you number 1. GWS/Sheedy was also eyeing off Bellchambers which I didn't want to see go but atleast Essendon has Ryder that can compete with the top ruckman in the competition. An with NDS, Petrie, Boomer, Wells ect they will finish their careers at the club, the chances of players like them leaving at 30+ years old only happen because of other outside circumstances eg. Chapman or NDS, not entirely their own choosing.

Monfries leaving was win win, Goddard has performed very well for Essendon and the club could only fit him in because of Gus leaving. Essendon just didn't think that they would lose another medium forward in a space of a couple of years. No different to Adelaide who lost Tippet and Gunstan in a small time frame, you can't replace them over night. But that's the way the cookie crumbles.

Not really, an introduction is a presentation of one entity to another....We were introduced to GC on 31st March 2009, when, then CEO Andrew Demetriou announced a consortium bidding for the Gold Coast to become the leagues 17th team (GC17) had been successful...

Some posters are funny. From 2010 the Roos have not lost any players to the expansion raid or free agency. A rare achievement and clearly a club that handle their players very well.

Some not so well run clubs have lost up to 5 players in 1 year.

Our clubs are very similar -both relying on their older players to win games. Harvey, NDS, Wells when he returns and Watson, Fletcher and Goddard. Both have early picks that have been disappointing - Hanson, Ziebell and Hurley, Gumby, Myers.

We have both been in no man lands with 8-11th finishes over the last few years. Looks like 2014 will be the same. Both inconsistent. The danger is if Essendon finish like they have in the last 4 years they could slip right down the ladder. Which would be a bigger disaster with no early pick.

Indeed....Regardless of how a club is run it's not uncommon to turn over 5 or more players off a list.....

5 walking out is rare.

No doubt, easy to be Victorian centric, out of those 5, only 1 was getting regular games...fact is some can't handle the move away from home and some fail to live up to their potential and prefer the comforts of home...Why play reserve grade in a Non football state, when they can play reserve footy just as well back home?..;)

3 that played this weekend were very good. You can blame the go home factor but the club is not in a great position and would be a big factor in them walking.

That's why they were selected in the draft by Brisbane in the first place.....As I said, easy to be Victorian centric and mimic the negative thoughts of flog Damien Barrett...Sure the club has to take responsibility but so does the AFL...The NEAFL is nowhere near the standard of other state run competitions..If a player isn't getting games at AFL level up north...Why would you sign on again to play in a competition that is not going to progress your development, when you can get better opportunities in ones home state closer to friends & family?
