I don't mean spin in a derogatory way. Simply saying Abbott's been campaigning for a plebiscite, and that seems like it's been appealing to people

Sent from my GT-I9305 using Tapatalk

He's campaigning for a referendum not a plebiscite & not until the next parliament which could be up to four years away.

Yeah because he is gonna want to have a referendum on gay marriage within 6 months of a general election.

A referendum on gay marriage would happen 12 to 18 months into the term of the next govt.

The first MP that isn't named Tony Abbott to be PM will legislate for same sex marriage, and be done with it.

So you think Labor who love to kowtow to their migrant voters in Western Sydney will go into the next election campaign promising not to let the people decide, but will decide for them?

It's a plebiscite. A referendum is for constitutional change, and same-sex marriage is not a constitutional change.

A constitutional change doesnt just mean changing the Constitution but also it could mean adding a passage to the Constitution.

So it can be a Constitutional issue but doesnt necessarily have to be.

Essential
Primaries:
Coalition: 40 (-1)
ALP: 38 (+1)
Greens: 11 (+1)

2PP:

Coalition: 48 (-1)
ALP: 52 (+1)

As per usual, nothing much on the 2PP front from Essential. A few other findings that interested me:

Best party to:
Security and fight terrorism: Liberals-40, ALP-20
Manage the economy: Liberals-40, ALP-24

'Direction' of the economy:
'Right direction': 35
'Wrong direction': 41

Concern about economic issues (% very concerned):
Cost of gas & electricity: 52
Housing affordability: 46
Cost of groceries: 42
Cost of petrol: 42
Budget deficit: 25
National debt: 24

How do you the quality of ABC's Q&A:
Good: 46
Poor: 11
Don't watch it: 40

(Breaks 37-23 amongst Coalition voters)

- The ingrained belief that the Libs manage the economy better remains, even with rather high pessimism about economic issues overall.
- 'Debt and deficit' isn't the economic debate that people want to hear.
- For all the hubbub about QandA, it's still rated highly, and Tony's tantrum probably looked a bit pathetic to the wider population.

Quite a long survey this week, full details: http://essentialvision.com.au/documents/essential_report_150901.pdf

Latest Newspoll

Based on preference flows from the 2013 election, Labor holds a crushing two-party-preferred lead of 54 per cent to the Coalition’s 46 per cent.

It is unchanged over the past three surveys and represents a 7.5 per cent swing against the Abbott government in two years.

If a uniform swing of this measure was repeated in a general election, after a redistribution in two states and a formal campaign, the Coalition would lose about 36 seats.

Everything hanging on Canning right now

Yes, mate of mine is a funds manager who used to like mining services stocks. Says that we over here the east don't know the magnitude of the arse falling out of mining in WA.

Hopefully the FIFO Canning workers will (unreasonably) blame the Abbott govt.

Canberra rumour mill hinting that Labor are going soft in canning because they want to ensure Abbott survives until the next election - he's Labor's best shot (likely vote for "anyone but Abbott")

Discussed on 'Insiders' too. Sounds plausible.

Bit of an indictment on Labor that they are so bereft of policy direction and leadership that they are relying on Abbott remaining as PM in order to win the election
Not really if they say anything now it takes the attention away from how incompetent he is and gives him something to attack (the only thing he is good at), they're giving him nothing and he's tearing himself apart.

In so far as policies, they have already released a few, anyway why show your cards at this point?

No point in detracting from showing how this incompetent government does not have any direction or policies except for their 'Plan". LOL
