Review R5: Port v Adelaide Review

The following i50 heatmap shows me why for most of the second quarter I wasn't too fussed (Port kicking to top of screen (btw 90% of the red dots were the result of the ball ping ponging back and forward over the 50m line)

Note: We still need to reduce the number of i50 we are giving up though.

Reality is much, much worse for the Crows.

Yep, this is the fabled 'domination' that Adelaide had in the second quarter. Look at all those hack inside 50 entries to the right pocket. Granted, they probably should have scored at least two more goals from there, but such a concentration of attack can only end in tragedy. Meanwhile, Port Adelaide concentrated on attacking the goalsquare where Westhoff and Ryder alternated, as well as a nice shot from Schulz on the boundary and an easy shot on goal from Wingard on the run.

Incidentally, this also proves that Mark Ricciuto has no idea about football if he calls this sort of heat map 'domination.' And goes to show why stats are pretty ******* useless without context. If you have to give up that many inside 50s, to that pocket is pretty much the place to do it. Excellent team defense.

Those who get to go to the Locker Room either thru the Port board player sponsor tickets or your own means, watch/look out for this man when you see the boys warming up before the game with the grappling and hitting exercises. I taped Fox Footy's Before the Bounce which started at 3.30 for a 4.10 bounce down on Sunday, and have only now got around to watching it and saw the boys doing the warm up exercises at the 26 minute mark. To the right of screen there was a bloke barking the orders, walking up and down the line, observing, all dressed in black - shoes, pants and official club polo top, jet black hair, short back and sides haircut, built like a brick s**t house and that classic square jaw.

I ran through all the coaches we have, development etc and couldn't put a name to the face and body. So I thought it must be only on bloke - our Tackling coach/consultant John Donohue. Looked up his image and sure enough they lined up. I'd like to know how many games he has been to this year to rev the boys up and what he did when we played North at Docklands as he consults for them as well? When we next play Sydney we have the bye the week before the game, and they dont, so I want Donohue at the club for a week or more getting the boys ready for the SCG squeeze.

Can't believe they cried about Tex getting done for holding the ball (3rd qtr I think?) on the couch last night.

Once you try to fend someone off now that is deemed to have had prior op to get rid of it.
Some people really need to learn those rule changes for htb. (including those ******s at West Flakes)

Not only that but you at least have to gesture that you are trying to handball. It was HTB TWICE!

The two goals came from quick play, Betts and Walker from memory, but the rest were mostly from ping pong or from what the Americans call Hail Marys.

Both on counter attacks. Adelaide were absolutely hopeless at switching the ball - they didn't do it once the whole quarter. If we attacked down the left, they came back down the left. Down the right, back down the right.

Some tactical genius Walsh is.

Every time the camera panned to Wal$h during the Showdown not once did I see him do anything.
No phone talking, no message to fellow staff in the box, in fact nothing. SFA just watched with no reaction at all.
Bring back Woosha that'll get him twiddling his ****

To be fair it was only Gerard Healy who thought that, Browny and Piggy put him back in his place on that one.

They all agreed that the HTB against Bobby was very harsh.

Port adelaide actually put him in as a plant knowing he'd implode under some actual pressure and wanted to see the catastrophe.

Seriously though I've watched some Cows games and never seen him on the phone or down on the boundary.

All I've ever seen since he was hired is the 'I'm 10 seconds away from a stroke' face.

With such highlights as "walking down the boundary line with my manbag satchel 2 minutes to go in the final quarter." If you disengage walsh, you can't expect your players not to. #wenevergiveup

Alright, we're up to Q3 (I really should put this in a different thread - maybe the mods can shift it later).

Clearances: Adelaide - Effective 4, Ineffective 1. Port - Effective 4, Ineffective 4.

This quarter actually was dominated by Adelaide, but some good counter attacking football saw the Power negate much of their progress into cutting down the lead.

Inside 50:

Q3 Inside 50s.jpg

As you can see, Walsh had Adelaide straighten up their attack by playing man on man all over the ground and forgetting about having a plus one in defense. So instead of pushing to the boundary, his players started hitting that sweet spot of about 42m out on a 45 degree angle. An argument could be made that Adelaide should have been at least level if not in the front by the end of this quarter, as they had a couple of really easy shots for goal that they missed. Then again, if you look at the Port Adelaide heat map, you can see where we also had a few failed attempts - not because of any great defense by Adelaide, but simply because we either kicked a point or missed marks.

The difference between the two sides in this quarter was again the team defense from Port. I lost track of how many kicks were to a pack situation in the Adelaide forward line, and they don't have any contested marks in their side. But there was definitely a tactic by Walsh to target that right pocket - not one attack came down their left flank the entire quarter.

Q4, and we're back to the Q2 effort from the Crows. Dominating the stats and not dominating the game.

Clearances: Adelaide - 8 effective, 2 ineffective. Port - 2 effective, 2 ineffective.

Inside 50:

Q4 inside 50s.jpg

Port Adelaide - straight and effective thanks to having a number of contested mark options. Adelaide? Ineffective thanks to soft as butter forwards like Jenkins and playing Eddie Betts as their go to forward. Walker was absolutely useless.

So, for the entire game, we have the following inside 50 heat map:

TOTAL INSIDE 50.jpg

Port gets the ball into excellent scoring positions so that even when they miss a mark, there is the opportunity for a crumber to pounce. Meanwhile, Adelaide...you've got some work to do if you guys think that so much ball into that right pocket against the boundary line is going to result in a winning score.

And thus ends the lesson that statistics on Inside 50 numbers are s**t and have no relevance to a) dominating a game and b) who is playing the better football.

simba_ and DonDraper did you see thru the Locker Room window if this man lead our tackling and grapling drills before we went onto the field like last week??

Nah I didn't notice anything. But when we were at the front there were only a few players doing their warm ups. By the time the main group was down there we didn't have the best view

I thought about it and have a fair memory of a big pink/red bag being held up by a big boy and seem to think Aaron Young was getting into it. Wish I saw the original post before I went and generally thought more about what I should be looking out for in the pre-game, but there was just too much to soak up (not to mention the beers)! There seem to be a lot of quick, specific warm up exercises going on obviously tailored towards different positions but only a small bunch are going through the stretches that close to the bounce it seems?
