It's a really weird honour where the criteria just seems to be whatever the selectors feel at the time. Sometimes it's the best performed player in the side, other times it's just the most highly rated captain/leader, then you've got random ones like when they gave it to Buddy because they thought it would make his resume more impressive.

Past 10 years is such a mixed bag, prior to 2017 they always gave it to a captain but then decided to randomly just give it to whoever they liked after that.
