Politics Should we NOW nationalize our mining sector?

Watching 4 corners… why aren’t we nationalizing our resources for future generations?

We missed our chance with Gough getting kicked out.

Is this our second chance?

We should.
But won't.

I dont want my taxes going to fund mineral expeditions. Let the private sector do that and then just tax them for the resources if they find them and dig them up.
Seems to be a pattern in capitalism that the more money you allow private entities to accumulate, the less taxes they pay.

So you want the government to set up a mineral exploration program? How much money do you want to invest in it? Where do you take this money away from? Do you know how much these people get paid? I will give you a hint. Its up around the same pay as the cabinet and prime minister. You will have to pay them that much to compete with private companies. All from tax payer money.

why wouldnt you just be fine with taxing the private sector for resources extracted from the ground?

Ever heard of CSIRO?

You would rather your taxes go to funding Mining companies exploration and profits in the hope that they may pay some taxes.
Typical Liberal falsehood.
It costs more for private industry to do everything but hide profits.
They can save billions when it comes to paying labour costs.

This is laughable

Australian miners control 66% of the world's mining operations. So we not only explore and develop our own opportunities but export our knowledge and know how globally.

and the comment................heard of the CSIRO
Ever heard of CSIRO?

oh my

the CSIRO do some wonderful work in metallurgy but mining is a complex business requiring a vast array of skills from finance, accounting, legal, hydromet, met, mining engineers, civil engineers, process engineers, chemical engineers, procurement, logistics, exploration geologists, mine geologists, marketing etc etc.

If governments are so wonderful at mining, why does Australia control 66% of the world's operations? Wouldn't we see governments controlling 66% if the model was so wonderful?

Sunshine, we only need our govt to control our mining in our country so that it benefits our country and people.
If mining companies want to mine elsewhere in the world, what's stopping them? Nuffin'

Also Sunshine, you reckon the CSIRO couldn't do accounting? Or engineering? or chemical engineering? or geology? LOLZ.
Do you reckon Twiggy can do accounting? Or chemical engineering? or geology? If not, how TF does he run a mining company? It's almost like a mining company could hire or train specialists in those fields. Radical idea. What ya reckon?

You referred to the CSIRO as the entity to run a mine. The answer is, they are not suitably qualified or experienced in the activity. So can you explain why you would reference the organisation?

I would love to hear how the CSIRO could achieve what FMG achieved, with the constraints that the CSIRO would have. I'd love to hear who would decide which mines would be financed.

FYI - I agree we should tax segments of the mining industry more. Iron ore, coal and O&G should have higher royalties than they current do. Taxing copper, gold, nickel and other similar commodities the same as the big three would not be appropriate given they are very different businesses. Which in itself begs the question how the CSIRO could possibly run and finance mines across so many commodity bases, given the specialist skills required.

Mining and resources - CSIRO
This CSIRO?
That does this research?
Doesn't have the expertise ?
This CSIRO that collaborates with mining companies like this?

The team wanted to eliminate the need to drill expensive diamond core drillholes for validation of data. Through three-way collaboration with BHP Billiton, CSIRO and cutting-edge technology developer Sodern, we created a neutron generator tool for real-time component analysis saving BHP Billiton more than US$10 million last financial year.

BHP Billiton chief executive Andrew Mackenzie: diversity will help fuel innovation

Do you know what the CSIRO does?

Do you know what the CSIRO does?

could you believe a consulting firm (be it government owned or private) is a very different beast to an operating company

and PS they are looking to privatise much of this division as it is loss making but the thing holding back the sale is the workers liabilities and the requirement to keep the team together for two years

sale price -------- $1

Come on Willis.
You were saying that they didn't have the technical expertise.
Now you're off on yet another non-secant line.

I maintain they don't have the expertise in running a mine. They provide specialised consulting........not operations.

Further attesting to the value of the consulting, they couldn't sell the business for $1 given the liabilities and losses. The market has spoken about what value they bring to the table.

It's the best idea I've heard since Prince George's one about wearing underpants on the outside to save on laundry bills.

Kram Kwality Power Raid.

Sounds like a consultancy group with ties to the LNP.
I voted Labor the last election and will be voting that way again next week, can prove it as well. Anyone that isn't your average Green extremist should realise just how ridiculous the idea is.

Because we currently give it away for a pittance. At the WA state election in 2017, the locals had an opportunity to at least get some more bang for their buck as iron ore is dug up and shipped out at record levels, but the mining companies and other politicians launched a big scare campaign against Brendon Grylls and they got rid of him.

25c per tonne, that's been around since the early 70s, Grylls was proposing $5 per tonne.

You posed the question, do you know how much these people get paid? Which particular people are you referring to, general mine workers?

We do. but we could simply tax it more.

what sort of stink do you think miners would kick up if we nationalised mining.

Gough put in place to sell everything Australian own with the Lima Declaration and was kicked off under Hawke. Our economy was changed from a manufacturing to service based export based. Sell minerals, products etc for cheap buy back more expensive

not quite as easy as that as we'll be dragged to the Hague for breach of property rights

it would bankrupt the nation

the miner's would be popping champaign, being the easiest money they ever made
