The decision to host the Olympics was made in very different economic circumstances to ones that we find ourselves in now, and historically Game's legacies are indifferent at best. Already there's a a backlash with the Minister in charge being forced to deny that they are "on the nose", should the Queensland government withdraw from hosting the Games now before any more money is invested in them?

Much like Victoria should have done with the Commonwealth Games, they should be trying to run these things in a sensibly economic fashion, not running the 4th most expensive stadium rebuild in history.

Victoria could easily have hosted the Commonwealth Games with minimal cost and infrastructure redevelopment but instead they decided it was either spend billions hosting it entirely regionally with non-existent infrastructure or spend a billion or so to not host it at all.

Brisbane as a major city with plenty of sporting teams and events simply doesn't need to spend $2.7b doing up the Gabba to host the Olympics.

No, they should just go back to the original plan which involved using their existing facilities with a slight spruce up, and most of the money going into transport infrastructure. All this nonsense only began when the state government decided they'd change the plan and spend billions knocking down the Gabba and rebuilding it.

People act like the Gabba is about to fall over but it's structurally sound and will be usable for decades to come. Not everything needs to be brand spanking new.

100% yes, we have far higher priorities and the business case doesn't stack up even with all the creative means of coming up with economic benefits.

If you support people getting billed hundreds for a trip to the dentist and $1000 for an emergency trip to the hospital by ambulance and the reduction of partially funded mental health psychologist sessions to 10......

Then STFU about spending money on the Brisbane Olympics cos 'what bout our hospitals'.

Don't think there is any host city that hasn't faced skeptics amongst the "whatabout schools and hospitals" crowd.
And when the numbers are crunched afterwards, the sceptics are always shown to be right (ie. the game always lose money and the only winners are pollies and senior crats who enjoy all the junkets, and consultants who get richer)

While I see your general point, ambulances are free to the patient in Queensland.

Um using existing facilities was never the plan. The original plan had them building a completely new stadium out by the airport that would never be used again.

switching to the gabba was the more economically prudent plan. But rebuilding it to only add less then 10 thousand seats is insane.

they should be rebuilding it with atleast 70000 capacity instead. Brisbane is a growing city. Its bigger then perth. Its going to need a stadium of this size in 10 years anyway.

Property owners are winners. house prices rise enormously before an olympics.

transport infrastructure users are also winners. olympic cities become much easier to travel around with all the new infrastructure. Improves living standards.

Except even without the olympics the gabba needs to be rebuilt. its old and too small. Brisbane is the third biggest city in australia, growing rapidly and its main stadium is smaller then adelaides.

You know very little about Brisbane, I see.

The Olympics are a much less important event than they were 40 or 50 years ago. Just embrace that and use existing facilities. Was in the Tokyo stadium the other day. Capacity 68k.

Could just build the infrastructure we need rather than all the waste that goes with the games.
