I retract this statement.Avoid Adelaide Oval. It's going to be our version of Soldier field. Preserve a few 50-60 year old structures and make it looke completely out of place....
I retract this statement.
Amazing from the first render?
Revolting.
Thankgod they went in a slight different direction.

Nice. I've seen cricket, Australian football, international rules football, soccer and athletics at the MCG. With a rugby league and rugby union games on every now and then, someone will have done that combination of seven! What about the most sports one has seen at a single venue?
I've seen Cricket, Aussie Rules, League, Union (sevens), Soccer and Athletics (Bay Sheffield) at Adelaide Oval.
I guess the way half the MCG does. I mean that new Olympic Stand is pretty stellar (the legroom is pretty restrictive, though, I remembered on Saturday night) because it barely resembles a stadium interior. But the rest of it's fine, it's open, there's heaps of toilets, and I don't think too many people reckon it's antiquated.Interesting to see Adelaide Oval needs to match the new Perth venue already

How will a 30 year old Docklands Stadium rate when the AFL finally get it in 2025?

Sometimes I find it staggering to remember that Vic Park and the WACA were essentially still in use when Etihad was finished. The difference between that and the soccer stadium down in the precinct is almost nothing, I doubt most people could tell you there's a 10 year gap in between them.
I think the big issue with stadiums, between new and old, and wanted and unattractive, is things like amenities. Etihad and the 'G are in great spots, so that's timeless. Richmond Station and Soucro aren't going anywhere and the CBD'll be the CBD forever. But people won't put up with getting rained on or sunburn, 20 minute waits for a drink, queues for toilets, having to rush or walk ages to even find one of those queues... so I think if you get the basics right, all you need to do is keep the seats clean, the aisles free, and the signs bright and readable. In ten years Etihad will still be a very good ground for sport. It won't be like Optus Oval or the WACA at all.
The change in spectator experience and expectation from 1990 to 2000 was probably the biggest we'll see until the sun explodes or we kill all the bees and bugs. The grounds were the last remnants of low cost teams and their shedding was the start of thorough professionalism.
