Its more correct to say ISIL sprang from AQ in the power vacuum we left after invading the joint.

So why are supplying Al Queda groups in Syria and why did we help al queda remove ghaddaffi?

Because having a bogey man in the ME allows both continuing military deployment in the region and plundering of resources, and also allows for successful propaganda campaigns back home capitalizing on that fear?

It works like this:

Step 1: Identify an enemy (or make one up).
Step 2: Ensure the enemy selected at step 1 is an ideology and not an actual nation or entity that can be defeated by force of arms alone.
Step 3: Ensure the same enemy can be defined as 'Evil' (so by contrast your own side can be the good guys).

Once the State has this 'Enemy' in place, the State can get away with literally anything by invoking the 'enemy'. People will gladly surrender their liberty, freedom and even their lives to the State. People who question the wisdom of any measure involving the enemy will be denounced as 'traitors' or 'sympathizers' or 'unpatriotic'.

Good examples from the USA include (in order):

The War on Communism (from around WW2 and ended at perestroika when the wall came down)
Ideology: (check). Depicted as 'Evil' :check.

By invoking the 'The war on Communism' the USA:

a) Never needed to implement health care and social security beyond the bare minimum
b) Was able to justify numerous proxy wars and military incursions around the globe
c) Was able to censor and strip numerous liberties
d) Was able to build, stockpile and even use WMD's and implement a military spending dwarfing the rest of the worlds
e) Got a man to the moon (it wasn't all bad).

The War on Drugs (implemented shortly after the 'war on communism' ended with perestroika; lasted till 9/11)
Not an actual nation or thing that can be defeated via force of arms: (check). Defined as 'Evil': check.

By invoking the 'The war on Drugs' the USA:

a) Invaded several South american nations (including Panama, retaining the worlds biggest shipping channel) and meddled with South American Politics
b) Was able to implement a swathe of 'tough on crime' policies domestically leading to three strikes life sentences and a dramatic increase in rates of incarceration.

Problem with the 'War on Drugs' was that it was confined to regional matters - and allowed only for limited domestic changes.

They needed something better. Enter....

The War on Terror (9/11 onward)
Ideology: (check). Depicted as 'Evil' :double check. Triple check even.

By invoking the 'war on terror', the USA has been able to:

a) unilaterally invade or deploy troops into several resource wealthy nations, controlling energy supply to the emerging EU economy
b) reintroduce torture and assassinations, remove habeus corpus, initiate military tribunals of it's own citizens (replete with the death penalty), commence tens of thousands of drone strikes around the globe
c) control the media, source metadata, track citizens, restrict freedom of assembly
d) and much much worse.

The 'War on Terror' is literally the greatest weapon available to the State at present to push whatever damn agenda it likes. Drape yourself in a national flag and invoke the 'terrorist death cult' and you can get the people to agree to literally anything. Seriously - literally anything. Torture, assassinations, public tracking, data collection, mandatory detention of children, stripping of citizenship, censorship and control of the media - anything.

The thing that people miss is that they buy the story that the rise of Islamic terrorism is an 'unintended consequence' of going into the ME, as is the subsequent creation of a perpetual ideological war. Far from Islamic terrorism and perpetual ideological war being an 'unintended consequence' of the invasion of Iraq - it was the long term strategic goal of the War. It wont be going away any time soon, because it's too damn useful a political tool.

And people keep lapping it up.

it's more correct to say that L Paul Bremmer created it..you can trace the insurgency back to the day he sacked the Iraqi military. Zarqawi took over the vacuum and launched the first attack less than 10 weeks later.
