Victorian Football Association (VFA) results and ladders

I have recently updated the VFA Season 1887 page on my website with a few Ballarat results that were outstanding, sourced from recent additions to Trove. With this done, I am fairly confident my site contains the first complete record of all VFA matches for seasons 1877 to 1896 ever published, certainly online.

With the 1887 season done, I have updated the Aggregate Ladder 1877 to 1896 which covers all matches played in the first 20 VFA seasons.
Excellent stuff!

Hi All. I am a new member and was wondering if anyone out there has collected games played by individuals on a year by year basis for each team from 1971 until the VFA finished in the mid 90"s. Trying to collect this history. Appreciate any help.

Cheers

A few updates from my site VFA Results and Tables:
  • Full details of VFA seasons 1897 to 1960 are now available, including quarter scores, goal kickers, best players and more
As far as australianfootball.com is concerned, we now have every VFA q-q score from 1897 to 1960.
Here's something you may wish to look into:- Williamstown Chronicle 23 May 1908 says of the Brighton vs Williamstown VFA clash from 16 May 1908 "The Age was the only "daily" that gave the correct scores of the match at Brighton. The Argus quoted the Herald's figures (8-10 to 6-11,) which were wrong."

http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/69700312

The Age has Williamstown 8.12 60 to Brighton 6.10 46:- http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/197333478

It says (in a couple of places) the winners scored 5.3 to 0 in the last quarter.

VFA Results and Tables (and AustralianFootball) has Williamstown 8.10 58 to Brighton 6.11 47 (with 5.1 to 0.1 in the 4th qtr.). There's also a discrepancy with the 1/2 time score of Williamstown (2.5 / 2.3):- http://www.thegapchessclub.org.au/vfa/ww/1908.htm
http://australianfootball.com/seasons/season/vfa/193/premiership+season/8/8/1908#round-4

The Australasian has scores that match those on the above websites yet it also says "Williamstown, who added 5-3 to nothing after the last change of ends."

I've heard from the folks behind the VFA Results and Tables and AustralianFootball websites and they have altered the final scores for this game:-

Congratulations to everyone who has helped to preserve our wonderful football history -& the magnificent legacy of the very proud & successful VFA. General football culture & interest in Vic. has, sadly, been diminished by the loss of the VFA (with similar diminution of culture in the struggles of the WAFL, SANFL, & TSL).

Five questions for all our indomitable researchers, if they have any information:-

. Tom Wills and William Hammersley both publicly wrote (& were not publicly contradicted) that Wills tried to get "football"going in 1857ie he possibly spoke to cricket/athletic/rifle clubs, tried to organise scratch matches. There was no 1857 confirmation in any contemporaneous newspapers ie contradicting the accepted organised, regular football 1858 start.

.Casual football games (any code) played in the Vic. goldfield areas pre 1860? C. Harrison, & others, wrote such games occurred in the 1850's -but no details.

.Anyone been able to find any information, confirming Norm Snowden's written views, that there were 4 teams, playing a code of football, regularly in Geelong in 1856 & 1857?
Or evidence of any regular "football"at all, anywhere in Vic., prior to 1858?

.We know North Melbourne FC existed in 1869 -but have no precise info. when (before 1869?) it was created (local newspapers for NM/Hotham dont exist prior to 1869). Clues?

.VFA 1877 has provided VFA Finals'crowds. Have any H & A crowds ever been recorded for the VFA -& for what era? Where publicly available (apart from Trove etc.)?
