When does Bomber Thompson come under scrutiny?

Couldn't care less about his post-match demeanour. He has the runs on the board and most would acknowledge he's an excellent coach. Probably one of the greats.

On a purely personal level though, the more I've seen of him of late, the more I think he's a really bizarre unit. You can almost see Roos, the consummate professional, cringe at some of his comments on AFL 360 each week.

He's taken us backwards but the media have cut him slack as they are still trying to knife Hird.

That could change as the season pans out but as of this moment, spot on. When Essendon win, the media go on about how good Thompson is. When Essendon lose, they don't say a thing about him. Some of the coaching decisions this year have been baffling to say the least and if it was a non-premiership coach in charge the media would be running rampant.

The same Roos that made Eddie calling a Collingwood game seem timid when calling a Sydney game?

Meh, don't know about that, either didn't see it or can't recall.

I just mean, as a coach, Roos is always so measured and considered with every response. And Bomber, by comparison, seems pretty erratic and becoming moreso. Not necessarily in the sense of saying inflammatory or derogatory things...just bizarre WTF kinda things. Maybe he was always like that and I just never noticed as much.

For the players, Bomber laughing and joking with the journos would be a false dawn. They would be soiling their lucky jocks waiting for the grill they would receive this week trust me. They played like shit and like they didn't want to win. There's so much you can do when that happens. It's like when you and the missus are in a big argument and then you run into some friends and she is back to happy and laughing and then you think all might be good but then when the friends are gone she's like "what the **** are you smiling at?"

Also thanks for the LOL old mate on page 1 who says all our best players are around 30 except Zaka and Rider (sic). Forgive me if I don't take your critique of the list on board

Its because Bomber thinks long term, despite not being a long term coach. Some of the decisions he did at Geelong early on were like... "what the" but in the end said decisions paid dividends. He is a bit like Blight in that he thinks a little outside the square. Now for someone who is only going to be there a year, he probably shouldn't be making those changes, but if he was there long term they would pay off.

You make a fair point, Roos as coach seems to always be calm. I was referring to his conduct as a commentator - it was highly biased and not professional especially when commentating Sydney games.

You could group some of his decisions into that group (for instance, persisting with Carlisle in attack) but some of his decisions have been plain dumb. For instance, when he named Fletcher and Chapman to play Freo in Round 4 when neither player was ever going to play - cost us dearly when Myers and BJ got injured as only one of them was able to be replaced prior to the game.

I've been impressed with Bomber for 95% of the year although against Richmond he made some costly incorrect decisions. Kavanagh as a sub, Daniher straight back into the side, the decision to debut Orazoi and not playing Hurley on Riewoldt.

Probably will. Until this year he was getting played a gazillion to be an assistant coach. I know that would have me smiling for quite a while. And now he gets to leave it all behind and get another cushy job elsewhere. More reason to smile.

The only thing the media are interested in re coaches is their potential sacking.

They won't get one here, so he gets no scrutiny.
Right. He is no longer the coach as of now. Why would he be scrutinised . Hird is now the coach. But Bomber could have left someone ready to run forward in quarter no. 3 when North made their push. Can't win if you can't kick goals. Only goalie there was Daniher. Pity, I like the Bombers think the AFL has crucified them like they did Carlton in the salary cap crap, wonder why Sydney never got hammered.
But someone will have a well structured bulldust answer, I guess.

There's still every chance that after this round, they'll still be in 7th position.

Should they realistically be higher? I don't really think so. I don't think they're better than anyone who's above them on the ladder.
Right , Essendon shouldn't be higher and North won't get past the prelim, if they beat Geelong IF?.
Its just a fact that working upwards , Freo , Geelong ,Hawthorn, Sydney , and maybe Port , are a level above them.

What's that say?

That I was right, a month ago?

I can't help but think he was the perfect bloke for them this year, with all the off field stuff he is a coach who doesn't need to prove anything to anyone, he mentioned in the presser he tried to make things fun for the players. A Goodwin or some other rookie may not have done that worrying about future jobs, if the players weren't having that enjoyment the off field may have completely crushed them.
Just my take on it and obviously may be completely off the mark

... the AFL has crucified them like they did Carlton in the salary cap crap, wonder why Sydney never got hammered.

Jack Elliott had a lot to do with the severity of Carlton's penalties. He foresaw the law-unto-themselves socialist entity that the AFL were verging on becoming and wanted his club to maintain some autonomy. Among other things, he threatened lock outs of broadcast crew at Princes Park and to do his own broadcast deal for the club. Was a thorn in the AFL's side for many years and "Honest" Ron Evans and Vlad were all too happy to bring the club to its knees and exert some authority and control over it, coupled with the idea of making an example out of the club and end the league wide subversion of salary cap measures.

Did you see how he cried after the game tonight?

He cried big time.

Like A LOT.

Must be pretty sad.

Not sure why he would be crying so much?
