Society/Culture Schoolies

Kids who go on schoolies are 18 years old, they're big enough to make decisions. If they **** up, that's their fault.

Sick and tired of people spoon feeding their kids and over protecting them.

However, cancel Schoolies, and the same celebrations would occur. However, they would largely be uncontrollable on an overall scheme and very widespread, thus there would be very nasty spotfires all over the place.
It never used to. Schoolies might have begun over thirty years ago but it only really took off in the 1990s. Before that it was never such a big thing. Now going somewhere and getting drunk, stoned and into fights is expected. That is the culture of a lot of youth in the past decade or so.

^^ Ah, yes, six months make all the difference in maturity levels! C'mon Bloods...

Cancelling a supervised event - which keeps unsavoury types (the toolies) from preying on drunk 17/18 y.o's - is a mindnumbingly stupid, idea unless of course you want to see the incidences happen where there is no police oversight.

I find the media obsession with schoolies to be annoying.

Agree - its the same stuff every year.
Good excuse for the media to show some teenage girls in bikinis though.

FWIW, I tend to agree with the OP but then again I'm double the age of the average schoolie. So long as they don't interfere with the general public and no harms are done then its not really my business.

If I could remember what it was like to be 18 :D then I'd probably be going for it as well.

^^ Well, if the OP got his way it would happen unsupervised, all you'd have to do is tap into where they are all going and go as a fully fledged Toolie, you could even make money selling drugs and sly grog, all while taking advantage of drunk 18 y.o girls! Totally awesome! :thumbsu:

and bit, what do you think about the so called foolis, ie the under age kids, like 12 yr olds turning up and getting plastered etc???? sad imo.

I've always thought the concept of a 'toolie' was just another excuse that kids use when they do something they regret. Like when a girl gets drunk and then proclaims that her drink was spiked.

If these schoolies want to act like adults and drink and have sex then why do they expect to be still protected like kids.

Very sad. But do you think that having unorganised, unsupervised events is going to increase or decrease the amount of 'foolies' attending these sorts of celebrations?

It's pretty well documented, I'm a southerner myself but I'm pretty sure there is a ban on people above a certain age getting into schoolie areas. Could be wrong but I think I remember seeing that in the media some years ago. An unsupervised event would be open slather for these people.

beaggrs belief that ANY parent of an under 18 yr old girl, could willingly sen dher off with cartons of grog they have bought, to a holiday which advocates sex, drugs and grog sick stuff.....are we trying to be spring breaked from the US or something,
Beggers belief you'd make that sort of generalisation. Typical of your type though.

I've never bought alcohol for my kids ever.

mmm. would think again on that one......

and my kids( boys) didnt go to schoolies. Ther choice. They went to the 1st cricket test, and had a blast, doing something they wanted to do.
and yes, both do drink now, whic is fine. moderation is the key.

not this binge of drugs and grog and sex.

Funny you should say that.

The only time I've ever been king hit was by a drunken yobo at a test match at Adelaide Oval when I was 18.

I'd rather my kids be at shoolies than anywhere near Brisbane after a SOO game too.

Why should it be supervised if at the same time people are claiming that the kids are now adults?

I could go into detail about the logical fallacies, the nonsense and the mind-blowingly stupid statements made in this article.

But I'll just pick out a few choice statements.

I wrote this draft for The Independent Australian. Does anyone else agree it should be cancelled?

You're a complete ****ing idiot.

the free condoms handed out on the Island will no doubt come in use tonight- the mates feel the condoms are like a free ticket to encourage sexual experimentation.

You're a complete ****ing idiot.

state governments have spent thousands of dollars in stopping the consumption of alcohol

You're a complete ****ing idiot.

this reporter remembers

In fact, you're a complete ****ing idiot.

To be honest, at the end of Year 12, I never felt compelled to have some big 'release' such as schoolies at all. I just felt like it was another year of high school over, and that I'd be going to uni (which is essentially a bigger, more matured, but relaxed version of high school) next year anyway, so I just conducted myself as normal after that (ie. just did the usual socialising and bludging that you do in your spare time as a 17-year-old). I went to a party with friends after our school's official Year 12 graduation night in early December, but that was about the extent of my post-Year 12 celebrations.

But then again, I never saw/felt Year 12 to be the big stress test that everyone else seemed to, and I'm Straight Edge (don't drink, do drugs or have promiscuous sex) so I'm probably not an ideal individual case study :p

Seems the 17 year olds are worse this year.

Like i said after the 1st week (QLD Schoolies, in queensland students turn 17 in yr 12) Most th kids will be 18. Of coarse there will be 17 year olds after the first week but more 18 year olds.

This week will be the one i think. Party week. im going there so ill let ya know how it goes :p

The ironic thing is that state governments have spent thousands of dollars in stopping the consumption of alcohol; it is now a fact that it would be unusual to go the whole of schoolies without having your bag searched- this how the police stop drinking, search and destroy. This strong stance towards alcohol has one really dramatic negative effect: drugs. Drugs are much easier to hide than alcohol, quite cheap and give a much more profound ‘high’ then alcohol. So in the government and police’s attempt to stop drinking, they have ended up accidentally, encouraging the much more dangerous drug use. We spoke to schoolies, and some admitted to preferring drugs over alcohol ‘it’s easier to hide, why even bring piss?’ one said. It’s just one more headache for the Police, they can’t allow drinking or drug-taking, but targeting one more than the other can have a much more damning effect.

Quite cheap? What planet are you living on?

Linga from your other posts, you clearly are a conservative religious person. You can't say that the above isn't influenced by Catholic (?) doctrine, can you? Might I suggest that in future, you simply replace anything you wish to post with a link to the Vatican website. It would probably be easier for you than bothering to type something which doesn't surprise anyone because we all know what you're going to say.

Do you really think that if condoms weren't handed out, schoolies wouldn't have sex?

It almost sounds like you're saying that if a teenage boy is given a condom, he is definitely going to use it. I can tell you as a 18yo/year 12/schoolie I had in my possession a lot of condoms (often handed out at events) that were never used.

if they had the cane in schools then i reckon the schoolies would'nt act like idiots. its a lack of disipline that has caused these teenagers to be out of control. soft parents are to blame along with the softness of the school system.

Same. Much to my consternation!
