It never used to. Schoolies might have begun over thirty years ago but it only really took off in the 1990s. Before that it was never such a big thing. Now going somewhere and getting drunk, stoned and into fights is expected. That is the culture of a lot of youth in the past decade or so.However, cancel Schoolies, and the same celebrations would occur. However, they would largely be uncontrollable on an overall scheme and very widespread, thus there would be very nasty spotfires all over the place.
mmm. would think again on that one......
Kids who go on schoolies are 18 years old, they're big enough to make decisions. If they **** up, that's their fault.
Sick and tired of people spoon feeding their kids and over protecting them.
I find the media obsession with schoolies to be annoying.
^^ Well, if the OP got his way it would happen unsupervised, all you'd have to do is tap into where they are all going and go as a fully fledged Toolie, you could make even money selling drugs and sly grog, all while taking advantage of drunk 18 y.o girls! Totally awesome!

and bit, what do you think about the so called foolis, ie the under age kids, like 12 yr olds turning up and getting plastered etc???? sad imo.
I've always thought the concept of a 'toolie' was just another excuse that kids use when they do something they regret. Like when a girl gets drunk and then proclaims that her drink was spiked.
If these schoolies want to act like adults and drink and have sex then why do they expect to be still protected like kids.
Beggers belief you'd make that sort of generalisation. Typical of your type though.beaggrs belief that ANY parent of an under 18 yr old girl, could willingly sen dher off with cartons of grog they have bought, to a holiday which advocates sex, drugs and grog sick stuff.....are we trying to be spring breaked from the US or something,
mmm. would think again on that one......
and my kids( boys) didnt go to schoolies. Ther choice. They went to the 1st cricket test, and had a blast, doing something they wanted to do.
and yes, both do drink now, whic is fine. moderation is the key.
not this binge of drugs and grog and sex.

I've never bought alcohol for my kids ever.
Funny you should say that.
The only time I've ever been king hit was by a drunken yobo at a test match at Adelaide Oval when I was 18.
I'd rather my kids be at shoolies than anywhere near Brisbane after a SOO game too.
That wasn't what I was referring to, but rather the legal aspects.^^ Ah, yes, six months make all the difference in maturity levels! C'mon Bloods...
Why should it be supervised if at the same time people are claiming that the kids are now adults? It's pretty well documented, I'm a southerner myself but I'm pretty sure there is a ban on people above a certain age getting into schoolie areas. Could be wrong but I think I remember seeing that in the media some years ago. An unsupervised event would be open slather for these people.
A lot of kids on schoolies are only 17.
After the first week i would say there would be alot more 18 year olds
I wrote this draft for The Independent Australian. Does anyone else agree it should be cancelled?
the free condoms handed out on the Island will no doubt come in use tonight- the mates feel the condoms are like a free ticket to encourage sexual experimentation.
state governments have spent thousands of dollars in stopping the consumption of alcohol
this reporter remembers
The ironic thing is that state governments have spent thousands of dollars in stopping the consumption of alcohol; it is now a fact that it would be unusual to go the whole of schoolies without having your bag searched- this how the police stop drinking, search and destroy. This strong stance towards alcohol has one really dramatic negative effect: drugs. Drugs are much easier to hide than alcohol, quite cheap and give a much more profound ‘high’ then alcohol. So in the government and police’s attempt to stop drinking, they have ended up accidentally, encouraging the much more dangerous drug use. We spoke to schoolies, and some admitted to preferring drugs over alcohol ‘it’s easier to hide, why even bring piss?’ one said. It’s just one more headache for the Police, they can’t allow drinking or drug-taking, but targeting one more than the other can have a much more damning effect.
I can tell you as a 18yo/year 12/schoolie I had in my possession a lot of condoms (often handed out at events) that were never used.
