I think it would be reasonable logic to suggest that after attracting Grigg and Houli to the club our number 6 draft pick will be used to get another Key Position Forward namely a CHF to develop along with the Sex Monster.

Can people in the know start giving us some options on those sorts of players so we can read about them and start fantasizing about them.

And Wang have you ever tried Michael Hutchence style. Do they sell RFC belts at Punt rd

Cotchin's as pure an inside mid as you can get...playing him outside would not only be a waste, but a luxury we couldn't afford, unless we had Ablett or Judd in the same team....

You could argue the opposite. Compare Judd at WC and at Carlton. At WC he was able to get outside and finish much more often because of the midfield depth they had there while at the Blues they have a dearth of inside mids and he is now much more of a pure inside workhorse. I know which I would prefer. Cotch's skills and ability to create would be somewhat wasted if he was played a pure inside mid - not to mention his body will be thankful for the ability to play outside every now and then.

Yeah and like Carlton we don't have that luxury yet...and theyre a top 8 side, we're bottom 4, at the moment I feel his clearance ability as well as his ability to break tackles is far more valuable to us...

Cotchin and a fit Foley inside , Martins lethal boot would be awsome outside but I love him in as well.

Maybe Edwards is the man or Conners and we send Tuck down back. Let's not forget Morton.

Hang on I'm loading up on us to make the 8. What's it paying

Might want to contact the club then Mario and let them know this is the case, as Cameron stated that the reason we went after Grigg was to give more opportunity for the likes of Cotchin Martin and Foley to play more outside than they have been.

Well ..dare we question the club's position on this board....

I think it's a bit of a trade off, as Cotchin and Martin are already elite clearance players (better than Grigg), but their skills on the outside would be super useful as well. In the end this should help their development as inside/out mids AND protect their growing bodies, leaving us in a good position down the line.

That's why we should draft Caddy if Heppell is gone before our pick. Caddy is an inside workhorse who will work all day and feed it out to your Cotchins and Martins who both can inside and outside anyway. Josh can also go forward and kick bags. Add to this Grigg and a fit Foley and we're starting to look dangerous at every centre bounce or stoppage for that matter. It would also prolong the careers of the Cotchins and Martins.

First 2 picks IMO should go to Josh Caddy and Jed Lamb! With the interchange changes coming in we need guys that can play midfield/forward effectively and both these two do!

Im happy to allow our young KPP develope for a few more years and personally i dont rate the KPPs from this years draft except for sam day and he will be gone!

Couldnt care who we get with our other picks!

I don;t think good teams have specific inside or outside players, but players that can do both. Have a look at Geelong and St Kilda...even the pies players are both.

Deledio, Cotchin, Morton, Martin, Grigg, Edwards (to a degree), Foley can all play inside and outside.

Tuck, Jackson are the only ones that can't really play outside. Need players who can do both and we have that mix.

When you look at it, we're building a pretty "big" midfield!
Lids,Grigg,Jackson,Tuck,Morton,Martin and even Cotch and Axel while not tall are solid bodies, and with possibly someone like Caddy who is already strong built aswell!
Good midfields have solidly built onballers and we're certainly on our way! Good times ahead!

I know Martin is an absolutely amazing long kick; how is his shorter pinpoint passing skills? (elite too?)

Was just having a look at the list as it stand and there is some real size about the midfield starting to develop.

Grigg - 190cm 84kg
Tuck - 189cm 90kg
Jackson - 188cm 92kg
Deledio - 188cm 88kg
Martin - 187cm 86kg
Morton - 186cm 86kg
Connors - 186cm 83kg
Cotchin - 185cm 85kg
Edwards - 182cm 79kg
Nason - 179cm 75kg
Foley - 178cm 80kg

Then there is also Houli 180cm 85kg to come.
Average: 184cm 84kg. Like I said some real size being assembled in the midfield. This should enable us to go much deeper into quarters with regards keeping up the pressure in the midfield. Depedning on who we add in the draft we could have another couple of players in the 180-190cm range. Another summer in the gym and the strength/weight should improve, which will have me feeling more confident of our midfields ability to go into battle with group of hardened bodies rather than skinny kids that get pushed around too easily. Its taken time but its coming together nicely.

you do realise foley aside and grigg that was the midfield we had this yr that managed to take us to 15th. to off set those two a little, we had cuz and collins instead.
the one glareing deficiency with to many of that list is there for all to see.

yes we need big bodies but we need well rounded players to go with those bodies. saying this i think the midfield is starting to take some good shape. as you say because of size we should be more competetive.
if grigg can come in and play well, if we get houli if we get him can do the same, i say if because both have had 4 yrs and not done to much. add atley and it is looking better.

How to rate Houli is as simple as where would you rate Hislop
Or Polo ?

Where do I rate Hislop and Polo, ...hopefully Tier VFL;)

I believe Houli should be better than both of those, but I haven't seen enough of him to have a firm opinon. That he's reported to be a good kick of the footy and very professional, put's him ahead already.

I think we should have thrown Polo into the midfield for a weeks when we knew his time was up. He actually can find the ball and get good numbers so might have got the attention of some clubs especially the bombers.

Not knowing much of him it seems attitude and whats between the ears is his biggest problem. Was given a good go early and seemed be in Hardwicks plans, but dropped off quick.

I dont think we are looking for onesided players. You need to be-able to play both inside and outside if you want to play in the middle. Outside players will be on the flanks where they have always belonged.

"When it's your time to go, you go" DH.

I realise it is pretty much the same group that we had last year, the difference is these weights and heights are their end of season numbers, at the start of the season they were all lighter. Another signifigant point is they are all going to head into next year with another preseason of fitness under their belts, like I said its starting to come together nicely.

i agree we have to be careful not to overrate our midfield. and underrate the loss of Cuz, in several games last season he was our best mid-fielder and played a valuable link up role with attacks from half back.

earlier on people had cotchin, martin, lids and foley all as Tier 1. Are we speaking by our standards or the rest of AFL Comp? Cos if it's by AFL Comp standards they'd prob all be Tier 3, maybe Lids would be Tier 2. All 4 have potential, but also need a hell of a lot of work to do in order to realise that potential.

From what I can see there is a lot of talent floating around in this year's draft pool. And at pick 6 we will add an elite talent to our group, but so too will Brisbane, West Coast, Essendon and probably Melbourne. It's all relative yes, we are looking good, we have a lot of ground to make up if we hope to play Finals by 2012.
