Re: www.footyjumpers.com

Just get rid of the side pannels and have the hoops go all around :thumbsu:

Like 2010? Although a bit of a side panel. But the hoops near the bottom g all the way around.

2011, Side panel goes all the way to bottom of jumper.

hadn't noticed but the jumpers are a fair bit different from 10/11.

I prefer 2010. And would make all the hoops go all the way round.

Viatel were for one preseason, 1998, and that year the jumpers at KMart had the logo. Their logo was Orange, Red & Yellow, in a rainbow sort of thing, with Viatel over the top.
But before the season started the company went under and were bought out by Primus who took over the sponsorship.

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

Geoffa, take this years jumper, put the hooops all aroudn with no side pannels and you have a winner.

2003 sort of thing.

Viatel's sponsorship was from October to December 1993.
Pretty sure the sponsorship shifted to Spicers Paper after that.

I remember think Viatel's sponsorship was odd at the time... in the 1980s they were an online service available on the Commodore 64!

I thought the reason for ther sponorship was they were flogging the idea of being an ISP.
1993 seems pretty early for that.
Pretty sure it was 98

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

It was definitely 98, because it was used in the preseason match against Carlton where they had that odd panelled jumper which lasted only one year.

Wow. Only image I could find of that. Never seen it before.

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

I'm absolutely certain it was 1993. I remember seeing the jumpers in Myer Doncaster, they were knitted - no sublimated jumpers, sponsors patches sewn on. It pre-dated North's Hypertec sponsorship, which in 1996 was (allegedly) the "first" IT sponsorship (turned out to be first successful attempt, even if it lasted just a year).

You can be certain, but you're going to find it was 1998.
I know that pic doesn't show it very well, but that's the game it was used in.

As for knitted vs sublimated, Sekem jumpers were knitted until about 2000. Then they went to the printed ones. I remember seeing the first of the Port jumpers at K-Mart East Burwood and they were knitted too, and Port have never worn knitted jumpers in games.

Sekem signed a long term deal to make AFL jumpers back when they found out apparel manufacturers were coming into the market. The AFL ended up allowing them to continue making them with club logos instead of sponsor logos initially, then eventually they moved to sponsor logos in the late 90s.
Had it been from 1993, the jumper would have had the Collingwood logo on the left breast.

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

Yeah, my first ever port guernsey was a woolen longsleeve one with the logo sewn on. 2000/2001ish I reckon it would have to be, I love it. Even though it wouldn't be worth a cent it's an absolute gem! Never dispute Mero guys, he knows his stuff

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

Might just be a small thing but the white outline on the number's on the Port Adelaide clash jumper they wore at the start of 2004 is a bit thicker.

Also only the 98 numbers are like this

We had normal black numbers from 99 onwards.

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

Kangaroos X Blades jumpers from 2010 had elastane side panels.

2009:

2010:

Means the back of the clash had some white down the side:

On footyjumpers it looks like this (as at Nov 8, 2011)

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

Mero,

It'd be great if you could find the time to write a general overview of Australian Football guernseys and designs in a similar vein to this article. You could have it on your website somewhere.

Fascinating stuff really. I know you've mentioned quite a bit of history in previous posts, such as the abundance of blue dye and most early clubs wearing blue.

I've written something like that before, with a plan to put it on the site, but it's now on the external hard drive that died.
Originally I wrote it for the NSM, but they never used it.
So long as I stay with the history of the footy jumper I will be OK.
I won't be doing a Gillian Hibbins history of the game and have to deal with the origins debate.
I will look into it. Good idea, thanks.

Ah, a pity.

Have you read that article? It is really interesting. Funny how association football clubs generally wear vertical stripes, rugby union clubs generally wear hoops and rugby league clubs generally wear Vs. I wonder how Australian football clubs ended up with a mixed bag, plus sashes?

Also very interesting to read that many original soccer kits had unusual colour combinations but mostly died out, and that Aston Villa's iconic kit sparked a series of copies.

Don't worry about the history of the game, that's everywhere. But I've never read anything about the history of guernseys apart from anyone but you.

We started out with blokes just wearing the one jumper they owned, which was almost always Blue.
The reason for the Blue was it was the only Dye that would leave the natural water-proof ability wool has. Every other dye stripped this out of the wool, meaning when it rained, you got wet. With a Blue jumper, the outside got wet, but inside didn't.
The first uniforms bought out from England were simply socks. Teams went about playing with socks, and then caps as the identifier.
Some clubs made an effort to co-ordinate their look, Melbourne wearing White cricket shirts for a while, then Magenta, which was essentially dying the White shirts Pink.
Given Blue was the standard colour, this was what was brought out from England, along with Bleu & White hoops.
Some have suggested this is an Oxford (Blue) and Cambridge (Blue & White hoops) University thing, though I have no evidence to support or deny this claim.
Regardless, Melbourne, Essendon, Carlton, Richmond all started in Blue.
Geelong, North (Hotham), South (Albert Pk), Footscray all started in Blue & White hoops.
Eventually more & more uniforms were bought in from England and essentially clubs only really tinkered with what they had.
Footscray added Red, North changed the direction from hoops to stripes, South changed from Blue & White to Red & White when they merged with Albert Pk.
Essendon added a sash, so did Richmond. Carlton & Melbourne added 'trimmings'.
Stkilda got some of the first non-Blue related colours. They were Black & Red, as Essendon were, but actually wore Black & Red jerseys before Essendon. Essendon wore Blue up to about 1890, StKilda had Black & Red hoops in the 1880s. They added a White scarf, then eventually went to Red Black & White stripes before Essendon adopted the Black with Red sash jumper.

Just fascinating stuff Mero. I really enjoy your website, and please keep up all the great work. :thumbsu:

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

Laughed when I saw your User name and that you'd used the new template.
When I first decided to do it I was going to use Vetruvian Man as the basis for the template, but I couldn't find a version I could trace properly.
All of them are a faded brown and the detail just wasn't what I wanted.
So I looked into using the Statue of David, and eventually settled on the little bloke under your name.

Even made these for David:

:D

The template that you've used looks fantastic anyway, but I can understand what you were thinking with Vitruvian Man..... He even looks like he's standing on the mark! :)

Incidentally Mero, I hope that you don't mind me using your template as my avatar on BF. In other threads on BF I've used some of the logo images from your website, but I have of course fully referenced you. I would never intentionally fail to give you credit.

Re: www.footyjumpers.com

That's why the site exists, so people can use it as a reference to point to.
Only thing that annoys me is when people or companies use the images to make money (AFL, Fremantle Media etc)without sending any my way, or where they take the whole site and present it as their own (Deer Park FC website).

If anyone feels like emailing Deer Park, and asking why they have them on their website, the address is:
admin@deerparkfc.com.au
