I'd heard it was 40m USD a season, turns out that was just about spot on.
I'm also pretty sure no other midfield pay driver is anywhere near that amount. As far as I know Maldonado is easily the pay driver that brings the most (FA brings something like 25 mil from Santander).

Petroleos de Venezuela makes about $5 billion (US) a year in profits. The reported $40 million (US) that Maldonado brings equates to about 3 or 4 days worth of profit which is chicken feed for the Company.
It's just like Petronas (the Malaysian Petroleum Company) paying Mercedes €30 million (Euros) per season to get their name included in the team name (Mercedes AMG Petronas).
