Confident that Ben Griffiths will be the man replacing Dylan Grimes. He is better suited to playing in defence than big Posty as he is a quick thinker with sublime skills.

The key to the success of the big fella back there will be team defence led by Trossman. If they all get on the same page Biggie will be a huge asset when it comes to rebounding the ball, think Dustin Fletcher with his disposal.

I expect he will be given the whole time whilst Grimesy is out and then his position in the side will be re-assessed. Personally would love a backline containing all 3 too really sure ourselves up against those dangerous tall forward lines!

Well he hasn't played a game there all year and has been training as a backman all pre-season.

No shit.

My opinion is, he is not a defender, he is a forward and whilst with Grimes going down means we are light on down back, our forward line is so out of whack it needs more help and Ben is the answer. It is stupid playing him as a defender unless we are educating him on his forward play, which from the noises coming out of the club isn't the case.

We are going to waste this talent if we are not careful.

is this like the journo circles tim watson quoted when bagging the cats? i cant beleive that the club coaches would deliberately turn a genuine a grade fwd talent into a defender just to waste his talent. people need to get over whatever position players are drafted at as a set in stone position they have to play. its all fluid to our needs at the time for player(development and health) and club.

You read it wrong. The noises from the club believe him to be made into a defender, my opinion is he is a natural forward and more dangerous and better for us playing in that role.

Not saying the club would deliberately waste his talent, I am saying we are going to waste his talent as a forward to help us out in a more vital area. This of course is just my opinion. I followed Ben's career for a while and he is every bit a natural forward, just needs a run of games at senior level in that position.

Would just be happy to see him play another senior game. Still remember that monster drop kick from the square of the G...wow

I thought everyone knew that Biggie can come back any time you want if you say his name three times into a mirror :cool:

Someone who has got more time than me can go back to pre-season and find the quote from Dimma that said Griff would play backline all this year as part of his development as a KPF.

He may well replace Grimesy this week and be the back-up KPD til Astbury gets on the park but next year is back to the forward line.

The club is playing a long game with Griff, they are trying to build him into a good AFL player. They know he has the ability - tall, strong, fast, marks, great kick, aggressive. But when forward he couldn't find the ball. I suspect they think that playing him in defense they can add to his strings - and we know a good KPF is good defensively. And if he ends up a monster KPB, damn shame. His capabilities would make him potentially very valuable. Like a few things he is being prepared for 2-3 years from now IMHO. It'd be good to see him in the team, if he has the form on the board.

This has been argued so many times mate.

If such a quote is out there you would be hard pressed to find it I think. I hope you are right though.

I actually don't mind if he does play his career at CHB. If it works, it settles the defence for the next 10 years.

CHB: Griffiths 200cm Atheltic, strong, great speed and great disposal, can play on the big atheltic forwards ala Goodes and Franklin and match them both for size and athelticism.

FB: Rance, strong, atheltic and fearless, can play shorter or taller. Great on the last line of defense as you know he'l throw his body in anywhere.

3rd tall: Grimes, clever, great spoiler, knows how to defend and offers rebound. Can play shorter or taller.

You don't actually need elite KPFs to win flags, you can get away with decent forwards if you have a great midfield. Rarely do you win flags without a great defence though.

It's win/win.

See Roar Focus : Ben Griffiths (jan 2012) and view from 4:09 - Ben talks about going down back this year - though no mention that is for development. I'll Find the Dimma quote sometime:D

For a split second I thought you were about to settle a long term debate and I got all excited :D but then you didnt :( haha

Agree. A brilliant backline and midfield with Jack up forward is a difficult team to beat.

Bennie with his speed, agility, height, hands above and below his knees, decision making and kicking ability (both in how far he can kick and accurately on both feet) is ideal as a CHB. The best CHB's of the last decade were all drafted as forwards IMO Lake, Ried, C Cornes and of course the perfect man we have to teach him Lepper.

Could it be that coaches are giving him game time, while allowing his body to develop more without being the target of KPB. It also allows him to be more the hunter and start forward attacks while leaning from KPF at vfl. Also I think he may end up swinging between KPF & KPB depending on opposition forward and back set ups. Just a thought.

I do think it's a valid concern though that he'll end up a jack of all trades and master of none. Just look at Waite.

Ben Griffiths says it himself. I am no good at putting videos from youtube in a post but search Ben Griffiths - Roar Focus and he says he is going down back this season.
