Now that the ruck rules have change in regards to contact/wrestling before the ball is thrown up, is Lachlan Keeffe a viable option? He won't get pushed around or have his body smashed around as much with the rule changes.

Considering that he's athletic, has super skills and is 204cm & 100kg?

Thoughts?

I think the new rules will assist those with a big leap, like Nic Nat.
Not sure Keeffe has a great leap, but its worth a shot.
I guess it highlights how variable our list is

Nope, he's a terrible ruckman, was tried a few times in the VFL and failed miserably, and then was moved to CHB and became a revelation.

How could he possibly be an option? I keep hearing that it takes rucks 4-5 years to develop, yet he hasn't played one game ever as the number one ruckman, even at VFL level.

Nope, Ceglar, Witts, Lynch and maybe even Richmond long term, but not Keefe.

Plus, he's the perfect matchup for a player like Tippett or even Hawkins, as long as he recovers from that knee injury alright.

Lachie will replace Tarrant as our swingman, capable of playing both forward and back.

I think it makes Gault very quickly an option. Excellent leaper and has the quickness to get to the drop of the ball quicker than the next ruckman to be really well suited as a no.2 ruckman.

Keeffe needs to stay at full back. He was by far and away our best key defender this season. He looks so comfortable down back and just so suited behind the ball. Would be devistated to see him ever shifted out of that back half. He is just a different player down back as is the case with Reid.

IMO Keefe was heading into AA territory this year before the knee injury. Hopefully he can get through pre-season without any hiccups and play a significant role down back for us. No point taking somebody who can't ruck (rule changes or not, the fundamentals are still the same) out of their position and ask them to play that role. We saw how well that worked out for us this year.

I was actually thinking more a long the lines of the back up ruck rather than no.1 ruck.

Hmmm I'm not too sure about that. I'm Lachie's biggest fan :)D) but his first few matches were shocking. He was starting to get really good but not AA Territory.

Definitely, the new rules suit tall players , not so much strong, big ruckmen. At 204 cm he should be a great option. Also I really hope he gets a chance to play in the defence again, he was extremely impressing last season.

Agree he started the year slowly, but at the rate he was improving in each game I still think he was heading in that direction. Hopefully if he gets back on the track in time he can give it a crack next year, though I'm not sure he'll be back by R1.

When Keefe did his knee it was pushing against Tippet just like you would in a ruck contest. I wouldnt be testing that knee for a while yet by putting him in a ruck contest with 100+ kg giants pushing against his knees with the force of their whole body.

He has the makings of a star defender, and that should be as far as we need to look. We got Lynch as the backup ruck. We would consider Keeffe there only in a game time emergency. In selection, the young rucks should get the backup spots next year.

It happened right in front of me (well 30m or so), I felt sick at the time...took a lot of joy out of the win for me. Although it was one of the best wins I've seen from Collingwood.

Thats the point...you can no longer push and shove in ruck contests. Have to jump at the footy.

Spot on, but I'd suggest "revelation" is a bit strong! He was solid.

Anyone suggestion he should ruck never saw him in the VFL. He couldn't jump over a Coke can and was and is completely clueless.

Knightmare is right in that Gaulty is going to be a better option.

How did Gault go in the VFL this year?

Not quite accurate unless I read the rule incorrectly. You cant push until the umpire throws up the ball or the boundry umpire throws it in. In my opinion not much will change.

When it comes to the new ruck rules, which were trialled in this year's NAB Cup, no contact will be permitted until the ball has left the umpire's hand.

Disagree slightly.
All the blocking and bumping being removed that goes on before a ball up will change the contest dramatically.
With the amount of time the rucks have between the ball leaving the umpires hand and them tapping it at its highest point...there won't be much if any time to wrestle or block.
There will be more time but only a little from boundary throw ins.
