Ok folks it is that time of year again when the best Big Footy has to offer stick their necks out and try to offer a little bit of insight into who goes where in the upcoming National Draft. Friday 2nd the Phantoms will get on and let us know who goes where.

As always we ask readers to be mindful that the Phantoms give much of themselves to do this and that whilst we all love feedback pls make sure its constructive. FYI - each of the participants have been chosen because they spend time watching and or being involved in junior footy.

There will be a rookie draft done after the National Draft is completed.

The rules

  • Kurt Tippett is not eligible and nor is Jonathan Simpkin who has been signed by the Hawks today.
  • Father and son as well as zone selections currently committed have to be taken (e.g. Clay Cameron is not available to be picked) but Andrew Boston is as he hasn't yet been committed to I don't think (Offsider?)
  • We will be doing the draft as per the official order and as per the number of picks each club has to play with (including picks that might otherwise be set aside for PSD selections.
  • If a participant does not think they can make it on then pls send Chris25 or I your selections for us to take them on your behalf. If you are longer than 4 hours we will defer to the next live selection in Knightmare draft.
  • Pls get your write ups done asap as thats the most interesting bit along with your rationale of why fits that club (I set up a thread a while ago in D+T where supporters make it pretty clear what they are looking for so if in doubt head there).
  • Whilst Adelaide and Melbourne maybe sent to the naughty corner we can only assume at this stage they will still participate in this years draft so they will keep their selections
  • OMeara and Crouch will be assumed to have just been added to the list (which I think is the way it works anyway) so you can't select them or don't have to use a selection on them.
  • Finally any arguments are resolved by Chris25 or myself.
Enjoy!

# 1 GWS

Lachie Whitfield - Dandenong Stingrays / 184cm / 74kg / ‘94
No surprises here as is clearly the best player in this draft and has been for some time. Is a midfielder but could easily see him playing anywhere on the park from Rd 1 in 2013 at AFL level before settling there. Is just a player with enormous class and work rate (beep test over 16 when tested at TAC level). He simply works his opponents over and runs them into the ground. His execution is at the elite level and his work through traffic is on par with the stuff that Judd produces.

# 2 GWS
Jimmy Toumpas - Woodville / 183 / 77 / ‘94
Magnificent player who is just an out and out footballer and shows terrific smarts and ball reading ability. Very adaptable player who might play back early but will go into the middle in a year or two. I think he would be ready to go pretty early. Has absolutely dominated National Champs and has shown some excellent SANFL form over last 2 years including being a part of the seniors sides premiership last year. Is just a really neat and classy player who has terrific skills inside or outside the contest. Has had some issues with his hip but he is expected to fine.

# 3 GWS
Brodie Grundy - Sturt / 202cm / 100kg / '94
I am 50:50 on whether the Giants will select him given I think there strategy revolves more around getting elite midfielders and then trading into established successful ruck prospects when the team is performing well and needs one. I am not sure it is the right strategy but what I do know is that Grundy is without doubt one of the best ruck prospects I have seen in some time. What people forget is Brodie is still relatively new to the game and yet at the last 2 championships he has dominated both in the ruck and up fwd. He is competitive in the air and on the ground and he has an amazing knack of knowing how to kick a goal when it matters. He is a competitive beast and leaves everything out there. He is worth the #3 pick!

Others considered: Really only one other I thought about and that was ORourke. He is a fine footballer and his movement and time really standout along with his execution. Wouldnt surprise to see him as the #3 come draft day but I jus thought GWS have so many mids they can afford to pour time into Grundy. Stringer, Mayes and Wines would all be close but I think the top 4 stand out.

Yoda_ out of action so sent thru his selections.

# 5 Western Bulldogs
Johnathan ORourke – Calder Cannons / 183cm / 75kg / ‘94

# 6 Western Bulldogs
Ollie Wines - Bendigo / 185cm / 83kg / ‘94

With rumours of an announcement about the AFL's findings re: Adelaide/Tippett today on the Crows board, I'm surprised Thunderstruck's not on here bustling everyone along.

In all seriousness though, I guess y'all can't sit idly by for "potential" stripping of picks from Dees/Crows, can you?

Definitely looking forward to see how the experts on BF match up to my feeble attempt. :thumbsu: Good luck fellas, hope not everyone on respective club boards hate you when you're finished

I would not worry about what people say, I could tell you now if you had placed Darling going to the Eagles in the second round in his draft year, people would have called you crazy.

Pick 8 - Brisbane

I am thinking I might be reaching with my next couple of picks and had hoped someone I liked might have fallen to me and so I could go with a guy I was sure was going to be in the top 10 rather than a bloke I think may fall in the teens. As it is I go with the talent and accept the criticism when all the professionals stuff it up in the real thing ;)

Dayle Garlett
DOB: 9/1/94 Ht: 180 Wt: 75

Let’s be frank the only way Garlett slides is because teams get scared off by the disciplinary problems that resulted in him getting kicked out of the AIS and missing the tour to Europe. I don’t know exactly what the problems were but he has been saying all the right things for most of the year and has acknowledged that a change of state would probably do him good. If he had it all together though, he is up there with the top couple of picks on talent. I watched Cyril at the Champs playing for NT and Garlett is an incredibly similar offensive talent. If he falls like Cyril did some team is going to get the same kind of gift that he Hawks got and that kind of win makes premierships. Personally I say to hell with that and draft him on talent very high.

Garlett will most likely start his AFL career as a HFFer. He played that role a lot at the Champs last year and in the WAFL seniors this year. He played 18 games in the WAFL this year and averaged 15.6 possessions a game and finished with 25 goals (really similar numbers to Cyril in the AFL). Not bad for a short kid with quite a bit of development to go. For his size he is excellent overhead and when the ball hits the ground he is dynamite. He judges the ball off hands very well and his clean hands allow him to swoop and keep going at pace. He has excellent goal sense and he is a good finisher but not in the excellent category. He kicked 25 goals 15 behinds in the WAFL which gives you an idea of his finishing ability. His set shot is solid and generally reliable but he will on occasion push it wide.

The one big difference between Cyril and Dayle is in the tackling department. Cyril has always been a very good tackler and whilst Dayle can tackle pretty well he does not have the application that Cyril has. That could change quickly with him being likely to be required by his AFL coach to chase more and with an increased endurance base he is likely to be able to carry it off.

Through the middle of the ground though is where I think Garlett’s future lies. He was the number one midfielder for WA at the Champs and the guy the others all looked to feed. He also played through the middle in his 6 games at Colts level where he averaged 25 possessions a game. He is more of an outside in player at the moment but his inside work has improved a lot over the last year or so and there is no reason to think it will not continue to do so. He has great hands, ability to read the ball off hands and awareness of what is around him. With more time in the middle he will become a very good inside player. Without the ball his spread is excellent and he works hard to get into a good position to receive. He would be up there with the best available this year in that regard. Another part of his game which is pure Cyril is his evasiveness when he has got absolutely no room to move. He will have three or four guys around him but they won’t lay a glove on him as he dodges and steps. What I also like is that he chooses wisely when to dance and when not to. If there is an option open he has the awareness to identify it and use it.

I don’t know who did the highlights package for the AFL this year but they did Garlett no favours. You would think from watching the footage that he had average disposal skills at best and that is far from the truth. Garlett is a dominant left footer who has great touch on his kicks and a balanced and relaxed kicking style. He has reasonable penetration but like Cyril he does most damage with the ¾ strength kicks that his great vision allows him to see and then hit. He did on occasion try a little too much at the Champs but I think he works that out at the next level. He is capable on his right but tends to go long most often rather than picking out targets.

Garlett is a very damaging run and carry player. He gets into space and then uses his running ability, decision making and skills to really hurt teams. He has an elite burst of pace and can clear packs or shut down other runners very quickly. His top end speed may not be truly elite but with some more focus on it at AFL level it’s hard to see him being caught too often. Like Cyril at 18 he is a little pudgy around the middle and is going to be in for plenty of pain in his first AFL preseason which will focus on building his engine and converting the fat into muscle. One of his main issues has been in preparation and his dedication in this regard will certainly be tested in his first preseason. He is a very balanced mover but could use a little more strength in his core to get the most out of his skills inside.

Overall I really like Garlett and I think he is one of the real difference makers in this draft. If your team gets him make sure you celebrate hard. His coach at Swan Districts described him as insanely talented and right up there with Natanui, Yarran and Coniglio who he also coached. From what I have seen I am inclined to agree and so I take him if I have the chance.

Everyone has gone by the BF playbook pretty much for the first 10. Garlett the main exception although I would be a bit surprised if Melb took Stringer over Wines. I have to say though I think the best 10 were those picked.

Yay, a classic Quigley verbose wright up.

Quigs can you please advise if you are doing your own Phantom again this year? If so approx. when so I can set a few days aside to read it.

Probably after we finish the Phantom. I still have about 30 write-ups to do and then a bit of tidying up. I usually try and get it out the week before the real thing

Ahhh Quigley you seem to have forgotten his shoe size and mothers maiden name?!?!? :D Love your work mate
