Seeing as how lmach and a few others have seen the light and made the investment in Adobe Illustator, I thought it was time to start a Tutorial thread.
Mods, please sticky this, as with the MS Paint and Adobe Photoshop tutorials please.

1. Clipping mask.
If you only want a section of your graphic seen, cover the rest over with a Clipping Mask.

Example.
1. Layer the fabric texture over the top of the jumper

2. Copy and Paste the outline of the jumper over the front

3. Select both the outline you've just pasted and the texture, then Right Click and click on Make Clipping Mask

4. Make Clipping Mask

5. Do the same for the back

This style is available in the following manufacturers
adidas 2006
adidas 2009
adidas 2011
Blades 2011
Fila 2000
ISC 2011
Kooga 2012
New Balance 2012
Nike 2012
Puma 2011
Reebok 2012
Slazenger 2007

Which basically means the stitching and collars are different, the rest stays the same.

Yeah I'm thinking of making the switch as well. I have Ai but im just not motivated enough yet.

Really recommend that everybody familiarize themselves with Illustrator. Was definitely one of the best things I've done:thumbsu:, more than happy to help out with any questions I can as well.

Great idea for a thread Mero

It's a fun toy. Guaranteed to ruin your life with the number of hours it'll have you glued to your screen fiddling with designs.
It's all I'll be using at Uni. So, yeah...life ruined.

I know Illustrator is good for lines, outlines and the like, but I always trip over the plots and colouring and give up in frustration.
It's really quite easy once you get the hang of it.

I've heard that, I've just got to get past that sticking point.

Complex shapes I can sort of do, but it's the fill and line colour/strength that I battle with. Tying them in with other shapes I also don't find easy.
I probably should seek out a few tutorials and give it serious shot at learning it.

I don't have Illustrator because I could go to America with the cost of a suite... but I do have Inkscape. When I put a template in, the corners are cut off, so the 'canvas' is too small for the jumper template. Any help with this?

If someone could do a @Smeagle-lite tutorial, I think a few people would be appreciative. It's just a real hassle to get familiarised with, but then again, so too was PS when I had it.

Okay, so I've had AI for a few days now and I can't even figure out how to draw a pencil thing. If someone could do a Smeagle-lite tutorial, that would help hopeless sods like myself immensely.

Just after some quick help.

How do I make the yokes not go over the jumper, but stay in the jumper?

Clipping mask. Ideally you should have all the stitching in a layer above the design, to keep it out of the way.

It won't work, and I'm not sure why. Can you please take me through step by step?

OK, put the jumper shape above the yoke in the layer order.

Now select both the jumper and the yoke and select Object > Clipping Mask > Make.

This will group the two items together, make the jumper shape disappear and leave visible only the bit of the yoke that was previously under the jumper shape. If you look in the layer panel you should now see that you've got a Clipping Path there instead of the jumper shape. You can change the fill colour of the Clipping Path to get the jumper back into view. You can also move other items into that group if you want them to be constrained by the same Clipping Path.

I think :D
