HAveing seen the fixture now, pass mark would be finishing top 4 and making a Prelim.

I agree to a certain extent. Having missed out slightly on the top 4 spot this year, its natural for people to think with a 'soft' draw, we should reach that next year. But IMO its great to play the top team regularly and be conditioned for that in the finals, as it theoretically makes you a better team.

You swing wildly between Hawthorn are the best team since well... Hawthorn of the 1980s... to Hawthorn were lucky to win either of the two flags they have (and both probably should have an asterisk beside them)

No lecturing here about Tigers training methods - merely an observation (a highly believable observation too I might add) - that when the Tigers looked the best they had all year they weren't handicapping themselves for that week by increasing their training loads. And yes I had that observation confirmed

I'd love to guess why the interstate teams have a great record against the Victorian clubs on Grand Final Day...

Is it
A) Hawthorn don't get to stand up for Victoria every year and sometimes lesser Vic Clubs play the interstaters and fail...
B) Lots of neutrals at the Grand Final who usually cheer for the interstate side lessen the advantage that a Home team has in the earlier weeks of the finals series
C) Perceived pressure on the side with Home Ground Advantage to win
D) Some terrific interstate sides have made the Grand Final... like the Purple Haze in 2013
E) The Interstate team has often played an easier/softer Preliminary Final because they've had a stronger home ground advantage in their Prelim
F) All of the above

If Hawthorn were to win one flag in the next 4 years (2014-2017) that'd be a terrific result - and being top 4 in each of those years is our annual passmark (and stated club goal - 5 year plan)

Richmond's pass mark for next year is winning a final in 2014. If you achieve that next year, you'll feel like you are progressing and ready to take the next step and challenge for a flag in 2015-2017. If you were to win two finals that'd be a bonus! If you don't win a final next year then you will all be terribly disappointed - and reflect further on the missed opportunity in 2013 against Carlton

And no I don't wish that 2015-8 are yours... Having taken 88 years to pass you on the premiership tally, we'd prefer it if we stayed ahead of you in at least the near future

Personally I would agree that 1 premiership in the next 4 years for the Hawks is a reasonable expectation, as your stars aren't getting any younger, and a fairly major overhaul of your list will be required in the next couple of years it would seem.

Premierships are premierships - I didn't say otherwise. I'd take one in a heartbeat for the Tigers even if it involved the assistance of the umpires, the AFL, and Jeff Kennett became our president, and we had amazing fortune along the way. Didn't say anything about asterisks.

No, I wasn't worried at all for Hawthorn. My Hawks mates were. I was going for Freo, but expected Hawthorn to win. 'Near Choke' means that the Hawks came close once again to choking after surrendering their dominant position during the 3rd, but they avoided that and went on to win. Not a difficult concept to understand unless deliberately misconstruing my point is the aim.

And obviously you are happy to lecture us. I happen to think it is arrogant and unnecessary, especially when you were giving your mob all sorts of excuses why they might struggle to make the GF next year. We don't need the opinion of a high-flying hawks fan to tell us what to think.

And (G) doesn't contradict my central points at all. If anything it backs them up re the 'outrageous fortunes' that can be experienced in the GF. It's not necessarily an 'evener' against home ground advantage if that's what you think I meant - it can go either way, and it can be pivotal or hardly influential, but very unpredictable. The advantage of an MCG GF for a Victorian-based side still remains.

Kudos to Hawthorn since the 1960s. I admit its quite a record. Its something to be proud but humble about, not arrogant. I know you must take some pleasure in the fact that Richmond is attempting to follow the Hawthorn model for success. And you better hope that your club makes the most of the current talent, because I can see the club having a significant fall just around the corner.

People seem to forget basically all the dead weight from the Wallace era is gone. Our list is young and exciting and will only get better.

You're exactly right.

Everyone is very cautious about talking about success. This thread is why I called talk of finishing top 4 and challenging as the elephant in the room - we're all thinking it, but we aren't discussing it due to our history.

It's good in a way I guess... Less expectation on the players.
