He looks as if his body type is simular to Jamo's. Doesn't posses a large deal of mesomorphic qualities, ala Watson, but isn't just tall and skinny. Should look pretty simular to Jamison, bodywise as he gets older. More athletic though, which is a plus..

Strong Lat Genetics

Very curious to see where he will be played next year in the reserves and senior sides. Watching him at the championships and rewatching his reels it becomes very apparent that he plays his best footy when allowed to be pretty unaccountable. Even though he played on key forwards this year and did a serviceable job, I think we've drafted him to create off half-back and go forward.

Watson should still be the guy to improve enough to allow Henderson to go forward permanently. So my hope is that Giles is allowed to play a Gibbs/Scotland type role, but also be able to read the play and intercept the play in the vein of a Taylor or Enright.

His kicking and agility mean he can break the lines and create play, and also kick truly to marking targets up the ground. I really hope he is primed to take over that role as I think he has he potential to be elite at it.

Very happy that in the last two drafts we have almost exclusively draftef creative, attacking and stronger bodied players. It's becomes similar system to Geelong, which is to take kids over 185cm who have played forward and midfield and have some creativity in their game. I love the new strategy.

It has to be noted though that this was his first year in the backline, so his accountability should improve as we develop him as a defender.

True, but I'd actually like to see him retain most of these attacking attributes. I think we really need it as Scotland is almost done, and I would really like to see Gibbs given a permanent role in the midfield.

Hopefully he does both.

I see Mick building a team of flexible attacking backmen, so that we're not relying on only one.
Simmo, Walker, Tuohy, McInnes, Watson, Boots, Docherty, Giles (and Hendo when he's back there, although I reckon he'll be forward a lot from now on) all use it well by foot. Exciting times ahead.

And most provide run as well. Whilst it is likely Giles will need some development in the 2s he is the man I'd love to see step up to give us that combination of height and mobility in the backline that Watson/White/McInnes/Bootsma/Duigan cannot. I think having a couple of guys who are reasonably tall but can play as running defenders helps with matching up on different structures game-to-game and within a game. With potentially Giles, Everitt and Walker we have quite a deal of flexibility down back and all can go through mid or forward as required. Might be a flashback to the 40s where we had a lightning fast backline to launch attack.

Looking back to Malthous' premiership team of 2010, I'd say he favours tall back flank/pocket players. Guys who can compete in the air but also play on smaller opponents like Walker. I reckon he'll be happy with getting Everitt. Probably why Yarran fell out of favour a bit as a defender as he's not good in the air. White and McInness are handy tall flankers that Malthouse will favour though he may be prone to looking for a third tall who is a tad taller and and gets a bit more of it. Simpson plays tall and is good in the air and exceptional at ground level despite not being over tall. Our key talls, Henderson and Jamison have great running and offensive games as well as being good tall defenders which is why Henderson more than likely will stay back as Watson doesn't provide the run and shutdown abilities that Henderson does.

I reckon there is a good chance that Giles will play a few games next season as an attacking defender with few stints up forward. He may play more games than you think.

The idea of Walker, Everitt, Jamison, Henderson, Giles and possible White/Mcinness in defence will make things interesting.

I would have thought that if you could manage to get Walker/Everitt, Simpson/Scotland, Touhy, Jamison and Mcinnes working well in defence, then you've adequately covered the mobility issue. On that basis, having the one player (Watson) who lacks mobility, but has good size, makes perfect sense. Of course, this assumes that he learns to use his size.

Also, in relation to "which is why Henderson more than likely will stay back as Watson doesn't provide the run and shutdown abilities that Henderson does" ... this begs the question as to who (apart from Waite) provides the marking and goal-kicking abilities that Henderson brings to the forward line?

Watson can go forward and back

It was being suggested that Henderson has to stay back because Watson doesn't offer what he does as a backman. Surely the same rationale applies for why Henderson should play forward instead of Watson?

Anyway ... enough derailing of a "welcome" thread. It'll probably be a couple of years before Giles is as competent as either of them.

But he does look like your typical attacking backman ...

I get the feeling that Watson will pick up where he left off and that is at CHF, played some good footy there last year just before he was injured. I've been saying that athletically and physically that Watson has more features of a forward than a defender. He's a big body, he's strong, he's a nice mark (when he goes for his marks) and he has that one thing that sets good CHF's from really good CHF's and that is a booming long accurate kick which means he doesn't need to get it close to goal to score goals. I feel his lack of pace off the mark and seemingly short reach will hold him back in defence but won't make much difference as a forward.

Check out the nice lead up, mark and goal. That's the stuff of a good CHF right then and there. He is probable the only player on our list who could have both marked that and kicked a goal from there and to me that says plenty. I also reckon playing him as a forward will build confidence in him, he gets very player conscious playing in defence and often doesn't end up getting in a position to get the ball and often plays the percentages rather than going for the ball. I reckon a guy like this will benefit from having the freedom to hunt the footy and focusing on going and getting it. The other aspect is that while he found the ball in the VFL this year, he also leaked goals at times from all reports, and there is questions regarding his ability to stop goals which is the prime objective of a defender.

Mick, like all great coaches, builds the team from the backline up and Henderson is the best CHB on our list. Especially with how footy is played now, a lot of the attacking is done from defence so I'm fine with our better players and running players being in defence, providing the neat kicking and valuable overlap run.

I called Yarran back a few years ago, called Walker back at the end of last season, lets see if I can keep my roll. Watson forward for 2014.
