waterman was reported on this board as not making the top 20 in a phantom draft. A modest view of somebody. Thus if at worst our second pick is 24 + (likely to be closer to 30) it is looking a poor investment I suggested. The reference to woodhouse is an obvious reference to an era where he led us to a plethora of small average footballers that lacked pace and skill. Hence we are where we are. Waterman needs to show a hell of a lot more that he did in the carnival to warrant our second pick - I have suggested he needs to be seen against men in the WAFL (all be it not a strong contested brand of footy)

But keep doing it if you wish. Is there perhaps another swift and masten out there playing colts.

We need pace sure, but we lack on ball class and Alec has that.

WA had the strongest group of inside players out of any state side. They had too many.

I wouldn't read much into the phantom draft if I were you. This is mainly for two reasons; one is the Vic-centric bias assessment of talent and two, the fact the top 20 phantom draft is based on the top twenty performers ONLY in the month-long championships. In other words it's a form guide. It doesn't take into account a players form before and after the Championships. We still have nearly five months until the draft and in that time a lot can change.

With this is mind we already know that Waterman was being managed with an injury and as a consequence played limited minutes and spent large chunks of games on a flank after his injury in the third game. His disposal numbers during the Carnival were 24, 35, 16, 18 and 5. As you can see he started well but his performance deteriorated as the competition went on. Keep in mind he was in WA's best in three of those games. Prior to the championships he was tearing it apart in the colts averaging 30 touches a game in the five games he played.

Also about your comment about him being small, he really isn't. Sure he's 183cm, but at 89kg he's really stocky and strong through the core. He plays a lot bigger than he is and is contested beast with a long racking kick. If you want a comparison think Kieren Jack who is one of the best mids in the AFL. You don't have to be 190cm and/or lightning quick to be a very good mid. Smart footballers who can find the ball, keep their feet, make good decisions with ball in hand and kick the ball well are also a wanted commodity. Yes he has weaknesses, just like every young aspiring AFL footballer, but considering what he brings to the table he is definitely worth a second rounder.

i wouldn't read to much into BF as well but it is all grist to the mill.
I agree with your comment -You don't have to be 190cm and/or lightning quick to be a very good mid.
But as I have said if you are not in one of these camps you need to be better than just a good kid to be worth our top 3 picks. EG- masten, sheep,

Yeah. Petrevski-Seton is a freak, better footballer now than Pickett or Smith from this years draft. Athletic 182cm indigenous small forward or midfielder, has a balanced inside and outside game with skills to boot as well.

He's got an exceptionally smart inside game but to play that role you need something else these days, compared to a Tom Mitchell he lacks the pure ball winning ability, compared too a Luke Parker he lacks a little dynamism. He's very much a small Priddis too me, plays a lateral game and likes to throw the ball to others sideways too much and he can't penetrate at all. Waterman doesn't read taps as well as Walsh, but he does most other things a level above him kicking, marking, goal kicking, creativity ect...

Id rate Palfrey and Baum higher than Walsh, Baum as a midfielder brings good ball tracking and tenacity at the contest much like Walsh. But brings marking strength and goal smarts to the table, genuinly underrated prospect as it stands today.

I think we'll have pick 8 and i think pick 8 will be enough to score Brayshaw.

More interested in Cunico to be honest, both are too offensively minded but Cunico has more tricks to his game. Can play more places and more roles, neither appear ready made prospects though.

His dad was a terrific HF flanker as a young guy at South, much like Matthew Lloyd when he debuted as a skinny kid (17?).

As they filled out they became big KP forwards. Just wondering if Zane is future KP size or smaller?

His dad was 190 but routinely listed at 188 through 18's (teal cup) and was slim and athletic. Played as a big half forward flanker getting the ball high half forward and swinging into his left foot ...

So hopefully Zane has similar athletic traits ...

Not particularly, just a safe consensus pick at this stage. Which i'm not really a fan of to be totally honest, it's gotten clubs into bad scenarios before with Melbourne the best example of safe thinking.

On "Laverde" I simple haven't seen enough of him beyond snippets from these champs, but he's contested possession percentage the champs is 25% which is below the magical 30% mark which should be considered a healthy minimum for most players.

His various relatives were decent junior players, with skill, who were never quite hard enough ...

I haven't seen him play but I'd like to see some real hardness and intensity to buck the family trend

Probably totally unfair but when I hear "good skills & nice player" I think "soft?".

Any idea if Waterman will play seniors in the back half of this year? If he is recovering from injury it'd be nice to see him fully fit and getting a crack in there. I don't think there's anything more to be learned from him playing Colts.
